While they might dress like Aussie Rules Football players from the 1920s, Karate Boogaloo are a serious funk outfit. The Melbourne-based combo earned their stripes as the rhythm section for one of the city's most popular local soul bands, The Cactus Channel, and their ability to create killer cuts from a stripped-back line-up of musicians (drums, electric guitar, bass, Hammond organ) is one of the most endearing things about new album "Carn The Boogers". Able to somehow sound loose and tight at the same time, the band's instrumental compositions variously doff a cap to the Shadows, the deep funk of the Meters, drowsy late-night rhythm & blues and more psychedelic, out-of-this world soul bands. As you can see, their music is hard to describe, but also hugely enjoyable.
