Thanks to a string of releases on a few choice labels, John Beltran has enjoyed something of a career revival in recent years. 'Serendipia' feels like the peak of this moment, but it also comes as a stylistic shift. Contrasting with- his earlier works of melodic techno and breaks in the vein of Apollo Records, this one's more of a jazzdance/Balearic full-length, paying homage to the lesser-sung worlds of broken beat and trans-European folk music, as well as the fruitfully sensory experiences Beltran associates with these sounds. Clearly an homage to travel, Beltran pays tribute to musics from Spain to Brazil to Turkey, notably enlisting the help of jazzy-proggy-techno legend John Arnold for 'Sa Como Blue' and 'Taina'. So sit back, relax, and get lost in whichever associations the music brings, not least from that flamingo-garden-looking thing on the front cover.
