Review

"Compost Black Label #28" is the second release from the UK's Jay Shepheard. His first EP for Compost Black Label is still going strong. The new 4 track EP ranges from jacking electro house over disco influences to Detroit strings, from early nineties acid to Balearic. This is another killer 12". Named after the city where Jay met his girlfriend, "Romance Gdansk" is a jacking electronic house number stamped with the classic Shepheard retro sound. Carried by a distinctive synthesized bass groove, deep chords/lead and sharp percussion this track is wedged firmly at the peak-time end of the Shepheard spectrum. On "4NC" Jay turns his attention away from the disco influence of the previous "Black Label #19" release and focuses on a more vintage techno sound. With it's distinctive 'acid' sample, syncopated snares, 909 clap and hypnotic synth-lines this one captures the underground warehouse vibe of the early 90's. Taking a moog driven departure into the more melodic side of the 12", "Dirty Cache" builds from an exposed synth line to a thickly layered slab of deep, melodic and trancey Detroit-techno. On the B2 is Jay's self confessed favourite on this release, "...The Party's Upstairs".
