Review

Parisian Hugo Lascoux presents his debut album courtesy of Balance Recordings. Based between Paris and Kyoto, this guy has released on the likes of Faces, Mona and My Love Is Underground: so he's definitely got credentials! The Diary/The Sanctuary LP opens with the blunted hip-hop jam "Day One" before the soulful and uplifting deepness of "Never Had" and the sexy, lo-slung vibes of "Invincible Summers" ease you in nicely. There are also some slightly more serious and dubbier jams like on "For Them Hurt Souls/Sanctuary" and Money $ex style dusty MPC driven grooves like the wonderful closing track "It's A New Day". All in all, it's an impressive and cohesive whole.
