Planet Mu boss Mike 'Mu-ziq' Paradinas seems to be mellowing with age. Certainly, there's something strangely conventional about Weird Drift, the second album he's penned with wife Lara Rix-Martin under the collaborative Heterotic moniker. What's on offer is thoroughly delicious, though; a sparkling, intergalactic take on space pop that sits somewhere between Junior Boys, Kelley Polar and Morgan Geist's Double Night Time set, with a few more far-out synths and rush-inducing melodies thrown in (see the brilliant "Sultana"). Some of the album's most striking moments are those featuring the faltering, fragile falsetto of guest vocalist Vezelay, whose odd lyrics and eyes-wide-shut delivery is most potent on the brilliant "Triumph" and immersive former single "Rain".
