The vast Black Jazz catalogue is getting reissued in style by Real Gone Music. Bassist Henry 'The Skipper' Franklin makes a big shout for one of the best albums of the lot with this one. For a while he played with Hugh Masekela's band but for The Skipper he called upon electric pianist Bill Henderson and ace drummer Michael Carvin amongst other talents. They cooked up a mad unique, truly organic sound that has fusion hints, elements of 60s Blue Note, funk tinged and pop inspired tunes and plenty of nods to Miles Davis before he went electric. It's a complex but rewarding album.
