By now, we should all know what to expect from the Hackney Colliery Band, an East London musical institution that has previously proved adept at fusing the lilting melancholy of British brass band culture, with the marching jazz and sweat-soaked soul of New Orleans. Sharpener is their third full-length, and as with previous sets features a mixture of original compositions, and unlikely cover versions. In the latter category you'll find inspired re-imaginings of Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box", Kwabs' "Wrong Or Right", and Three Trapped Tigers' "Cramm". Really, though, it's the breeziness and funkiness of their original tracks that steals the show, with the up-tempo workouts "When You Know" and "It's Normally Bigger" standing out.
