Michael Mayer's Kompakt label has always done things differently. Thus, to mark their 20th anniversary, they've asked Cologne-based multi-instrumentalist Gregor Schwellenbach to record chamber music covers of 20 classic label cuts. High concept? Perhaps a little, but the results are rarely less than sublime. The label's mix of shuffling techno-pop, curious ambience and murky floorfillers lends itself well to reinterpretation, and Schwellenbach's versions veer from piano-laden laments (his take on Gui Boratto's "No Turning Back") and blissful marimba workouts (Kaito's "Everlasting"), to spine-tingling brilliance (Supermayer's "Two of Us") and intense chamber funk (Michael Mayer's "Speaker"). A great idea, brilliantly executed.
