21 years after delivering his first 12" under the now familiar Future Beat Alliance alias, electro and techno purist Matthew Puffett is still going strong. Having released a brilliant new album at the tail end of last year, he's decided to take us back to the early days of his career via a reissue of debut EP Mode 2. Despite being more than two decades old, the material still sounds thrillingly fresh. Check, for example, the Drexciya-on-the-moon brilliance of ambient electro shuffler "Mode 2", the bubby, B12 style IDM of "Violatile Memory" and the enveloping dreaminess of Motor City techno bubbler "Eectric Blues". Arguably best of all, though, is "Deep Enuff", an alternately rubbery and spacey chunk of fizzing electro that remains one of Puffett's most endearing creations.
