A bona fide Afrofunk history lesson right here. Known as the backing band for Geraldo Pino, Freedom Family formed in 1970 and toured so heavily throughout the decade they only manage to record one album. But what an album it is! Leaning heavily on the western funk influences, there's a startling tightness between each band section as we're hammered and massaged by raw funk in equal measure. Highlights include the emphatic African harmonies on the title track, the bluesy horn and bass unity and sharp staccato vocals on "Lovers Garden" and the unparalleled vibrancy of "Life". Complete with an eight page book with notes from the singer Albert Jones, this really is a very special reissue.
