Review

During the late 1990s, Manchester's Rainy City Music played a key role in showcasing a new brand of British-made deep house music. Two decades on from the label's launch, the crew behind it is still looking forwards, as this anniversary compilation proves. Instead of gathering together forgotten back catalogue gems, they've put together a set of previously unheard cuts, most of which are brand new. There's naturally much to enjoy, from the warehouse-friendly shuffle and spoken word vocals of Tiff Massey's "Detroit Is Black" and the undulating, jazz-flecked wooziness of I Rainy and Baba Israel's "Freedom Music (Who remix)", to the trippy, dub-flecked ultra deepness of Unnayanaa's "P9" and the deep jazz-house brilliance of "Loighter Shades of Blue" by I Rainy and Rex Leon.
