For the last six years, long-serving downtempo producer Jesse Munro Johnson - best known for his work as Gulls - has been serving up sporadic dub-wise experiments as the bandleader of the Elite Beat alias. Selected Rhythms Volume 2 offers a second deep-dive into the outfit's archives, and in particular their cassette-only Casual Rhythms series. It's another fine collection that fuses authentic reggae instrumentation (horns, bass, clipped guitars) and riddims with musical elements borrowed from jazz, Latin music, dub disco (see the delicious dancefloor flex of 'The Confuser (Dub)') and the ambient end of dub techno ('RLc (Vocoder Dub)'). A genuine must-check for those of a dub-wise persuasion.
