Review

Duval Timothy brings the art of jazz piano into the modern age, drawing on his heritage growing up in Sierra Leone as much as his life in London and weaving personal messages from social media into the mix on this first release for his own label, Carrying Colour. In amongst the beautifully expressive piano pieces you'll hear snippets of messages from friends and family, adding an intriguingly personal and thoroughly modern slant that winds up adding weight to Timothy's dexterous piano work. Purists may raise their eyebrows, but this points the way for skilled musicianship to step out of the confines of tradition and exist in the contemporary world, and there's no arguing with Timothy's skills as a pianist.
