It would be fair to say that Moosebumps: An Exploration Into Modern Day Horripilation is an "event release". Not only is it the first Dr Octagon album for 12 years, but also reunites the project's "Holy Trinity" of originator Kool Keith, producer Dan The Automator and turntable wizard DJ Q-Bert. The results are, naturally, very impressive. Continuing with the hazy, intergalactic concept established at the project's inception, the album's 15 tracks mix crunchy, left-of-centre hip-hop beats and killer samples with alien synthesizer lines, fuzzy electronic basslines, jazzy flourishes, Star Wars-level scratches (particularly noticeable on "Bear Witness IV") and Kool Keith's incomparable raps. In other words, it's every bit as impressive and essential as we'd hoped for.
