Review

Back in 2010, esteemed espadrille wearing diggers Balearic Mike and Kelvin 'Soul Mekanik' Andrews put together a sublime selection of oddities, curios and gems for the WONK label under the all too suitable title Down To The Sea And Back. Some four years on the pair return with a second edition that is the end result of plenty of "late nights, licensing cat and mouse games, and dusty fingered rummaging" and the fourteen tracks are likely to place Down To The Sea & Back Vol 2 alongside it's predecessor in the cult compilation stakes. Staying true to the Balearic beat, there is plenty of ground covered here, from an eccentric French cover of reggae classic "Chase The Devil" (Dou Dou's "Chocolate Out Vanile Reggae") and the shimmering electronics of Chris and Cosey, to Ned Doheny's stoner-rock cover of Tata Vega's disco classic "Give It Up For Love". There's also some thrillingly wide-eyed slo-mo disco in the shape of Clout's brilliant "Sunshine Baby" and a chunk of African drum voodoo from Guem Et Zaca Percussion.
