Frankfurt's Thomas Koch has always been more comfortable working within the constraints of the club-friendly 12" single, so it's great to see him finally fully embracing the potential of the album format. Whereas his previous two LPs barely strayed from warehouse-flavored house and techno, The Pleasure Principle sees him develop his sound in a multitude of new directions. Ironically, it's these forays into different styles and genres offbeat downtempo pop, intoxicating electronic disco workouts and blissful, beatless Balearica that really stand out. Check, for example, the stained glass synth jam vibes of "Nothing Even Comes Close" (think early Eglo) or "Unconditional Love", a slo-mo instrumental that bubbles excitedly with sweet, early morning charm.
