Having previously "re-built" two obscure bleep classics from scratch (Detromental's "Move" and "Rewind"), Central Processing Unit founder Chris Smith turns his attention to the bombastic TR-808 rhythm tracks underpinning some of his favourite electro-funk classics. The resultant cuts - sparse and stripped-back but undeniably heavy and floor-friendly - are presented on this tasty (but limited) white vinyl EP. Smith apparently used Roland's recent "Boutique" version of the 808 rather than original unit, but you honestly can't tell - his takes on the drums from Mantronix's "Needle to the Groove" and Cybotron's peerless "Clear", both with the required amount of outboard effects, are every bit as heavy and futuristic as the lauded original versions.
