Color Tapes USGary Ramon's Color Tapes label (later Color Discs) has long fascinated collectors of post-punk, new wave and leftfield British synth-pop. Given that the label's original 1980s releases were often put out in stupidly limited qualities (100 cassettes or 7" singles for the most part), this retrospective is well overdue. As you might expect, much of the material sounds like a cross between early Depeche Mode (a great inspiration for Ramon, apparently), curious Italian coldwave and proto-EBM. Pleasingly, all the material has been re-mastered by legendary engineer Denis Blackham, giving the original analogue sounds - wonky synthesizers and drum machines, mainly - a whole new lease of life. Essential stuff.
