Over the last few years, Charlotte Adigery and Bolis Pupol have been amongst Deewee's most successful artists, regularly collaborating with label founders Soulwax on singles that blur the boundaries between synth-pop, electronic funk and more forthright dancefloor workouts. Topical Dancer, the pair's collaborative debut album, follows the same winning formula - Soulwax once again share co-writing and production duties - with a unifying theme: their experiences of being people of colour in a predominantly white Anglo-Saxon nation (in their case Belgium, though Adigery has said that the US and the UK were also in her thoughts). The results are never less than inspired, with strong songs aplenty, brilliant production and enough subtle musical shifts to please heads.
