Over the last 15 years, Phil Mison has slowly built up his Cantoma project via drowsy, dreamy and sun-kissed releases on Music For Dreams, Leng, and his own Highwood Recordings. Here he returns to the latter with a 12" that recalls the halcyon days of late '80s Balearic house. The Whatever Whatever version of "Tabarin" is particularly potent, featuring as it does wobbly electronics and flamenco guitars over a hustling, decidedly Spanish groove. "Abando (Instrumental)" is closer to regular Cantoma fare, with glistening guitars, swirling strings and Siesta-friendly chords stretching out over sunset-ready downtempo beats. Mison continues on this theme on the folksy, Bossa-influenced closer "Monk Island".
