Review

Arguably, Bodily Functions remains Matthew Herbert's best album to date. Originally released in 2001, it delivers exactly the right mix of clicky, far-sighted experimentalism, atmospheric jazz, wonky house and curious leftfield pop. While some of Herbert's albums have sunk under the weight of their grandiose concepts, Bodily Functions has no such problem; it is, put simply, his masterpiece. This special edition reissue features a second disc of alternate versions and remixes, with familiar Herbert collaborators, friends and inspirations - Plaid, Matmos, DJ Koze and Phil Parnell - dropping excellent interpretations that veer from bold and intense, to soft and furry. Jamie Lidell's raw soul version of "The Audience" is, in particular, brilliant.
