It has a been a relentless rise to the top of the British guitar underground for Black Midi. After releasing their debut album, Schlagenheim, the group found themselves fighting off fawning press, but tastemakers like NME already declared them "the best band in London" before they even released a single. Hype like that is always difficult to live up to, but given the musical quality and innovative ideas happening on this, their difficult second album, it seems the triumphant march is only gaining momentum.
Those looking for more of the same will find themselves coming up short, although those people should also be asking themselves why they though more of the same would ever be on the cards. Swerving momentarily from some of the stylistic traits we have previously encountered, if not veering from those paths altogether, Cavalcade is a masterstroke of noise, boom, jazz, and ambient folk.
