Sometime Church and Far Out Recordings artist Ben Hauke is the latest bright young thing to join West London's revitalized Cooperation Recordings label, which recently returned to action after laying dormant for over a decade. Hauke's first EP for the legendary broken beat crew sounds like something they themselves would have made back in the early to mid '90s. Lead cut "Simple", for example, is a beautifully jazzy and laidback chunk of soulful broken beat that sounds little less than an unreleased Bugz In The Attic heater. Hauke moves closer to the jazz-funk inspired work of Kaidi Tatham - especially his Afronaught project - on "Movin' Broke", before wrapping angular electric piano stabs around bruk-up beats and bass on killer closing cut "Why They Got The Light".
