This is an interesting collection from the celebrated crate diggers behind Germany's consistently good Tramp label. As the title suggests, it has been designed to showcase a selection of vintage funk tracks featuring the sort of half sung/half spoken vocals that were arguably the predecessor of rap. Listen to Billy Dee and Sugarbear's "Everybody Says", Blowfly's "Sesame Street" or Pigment Markham's riotously upbeat "We Got The Number", and the debt owed by early New York rappers to these forgotten funk heroes becomes obvious. Given that James Brown was one of the pioneers of this style of vocals, it's nice to see him present amongst an impressive tracklist.
