Amaranthine Labyrinth EP vinyl

At first glance, house wizard Fudge Fingas would seem an unlikely candidate for a label which has been delivering progressively deeper techno bombs. On the other hand, the music of Gavin Sutherland can never really be pigeon-holed either. The hard-hitting hi-hats which start off "Eyes On The Prize" seem to be heading towards the warehouse direction, but in fact mesh neatly with an old-school rhythm and develop into a track that's full of funk. The same can be said for "NTNLNC", where a dark and distant bass drum is quickly converted into a bouncy sampling pastiche that fits somewhere between Basement Jaxx and Soundstream. The B side heads into deeper territory and makes room for Sutherland himself to carry his lyrics over sparkling tweets and a rugged drum machine groove. "All As It Should Be" closes the EP in strict lo-fi fashion, with echoed lyrics washing over subtle hi-hats and a slow, synth-led beat which leaves us intrigued about what we can expect next from both label and artist.
