Before fully embracing their post-metal machinations on the 2002 sophomore effort The Mantle, the debut LP from Portland, Oregon folk metal experimentalists Agalloch was initially released in 1999 and introduced legions of metalheads to their dynamic and sprawling approach to metallic extremity. Combining elements of doom and black metal with eclectic Scandinavian folk, the apt title of Pale Folklore lived up to its promise and premise with a poetic and unsettling sonic journey into nature, folklore, cosmic ponderings and seasonal depression, all distilled within a cavernous style of harrowing and caustic production. Reissued on a trifold 180 gram vinyl 2xLP, this long overdue repress offers the highest audio quality yet to a work that has only expanded its influence over the decades since.
