  3. Once & Forever (7:46)
  4. Long Time Running (7:40)
Review: Tale of Us have very much fomented their own epic but emotive dark techno sound. Their Afterlife label has become a home to such sounds from a wide range of artists and next up is Alfa Romero, who straps in for a ride to the stars. "1001 Nights" is serene and smooth and perfect for late night driving on motorways, "Learning To Fly" is awash with even more chords and dazzling pads that will get hands in the air. The emotional overflow continues on "Once & Forever" which has a slightly darker heart, and "Long Time Running" closes in spellbinding fashion.

Inner Movement EP (140 gram vinyl 12")

  1. Inner Movement (5:59)
  2. Dizzy Freq (6:24)
  3. Dizzy Freq (Domenico Rosa remix) (7:01)
  4. Inner Movement (Titonton Duvante Flip) (6:11)
Review: Berlin-based Italian producer Audri has been scattering his smart, fine-tuned machine soul across a handful of labels over the past four years. Picking up the thread from the emotive and inventive end of the 90s techno spectrum, his latest drop on Albion should appeal to all those who can't get enough of that B12-flavoured sound. 'Inner Movement' sports plenty of classic Motor City influences, but given a crisp modern finish. 'Dizzy Freq' has a deeper demeanour that jacks and jives in equal measure, with a nod to the formative sound of bleep techno. Domenica Rosa delivers a fun and freaky twist on the original, before the legendary Titonton Duvante dubs things out nicely on his version of 'Inner Movement'.

Bford 14 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SL 4. Rel: 28 Sep 20
  1. Night D3 Died (6:24)
  2. Make Your Own Sunshine (6:09)
  3. Serpentine Tale (6:02)
  4. The Introducer (8:10)
Review: Although rarely spoken about in hushed tones, Peter Adshead AKA Baby Ford is one of British house and techno's true pioneers. As many readers will know, he spent the first decade of his career exploring acid house and rave, before switching to a deeper and more minimalistic techno and tech-house sound towards the end of the '90s. It's in that period that BFORD14, which is finally being reissued, first appeared in stores. Intoxicating, bass-heavy and entrancing, the EP's many highlights include the hissing hypnotism of 'Serpentine Tale', the deep bass, melancholic synthesiser chords and crunchy drums of 'Night D3 Died', and the spacey, deep techno warmth of deliciously hazy closing cut 'The Introducer'.

  1. Marina Verdi - "Shamanwoman" (Barac edit) (11:51)
  2. Marina Verdi - "Shamanwoman" (4:19)
  3. Barac - "Who Says Imagniation Isn't Reality?" (8:37)
Review: Since launching last year, Barac's Shamandrum label has become a must-check for those who like their club cuts to be psychedelic or mind-altering. He kicks off the imprint's fourth EP by reconstructing Marina Verdi's mesmerising, beat-free vocal cut "Shamanwoman" (track two), brilliantly re-imagining the track as a slowly-building chunk of hallucinatory tech-house laden with wiggly acid bass, hypnotic drums and pulsing electronic motifs. As he has done on all of the label's previous releases, Barac provides an original production of his own on the flip. "Who Says Imagination Isn't Reality" is nominally tech-house, though the track's locked-in electronic rhythm, creepy synthesizer melodies and bubbly acid lines are a world away from bog-standard peak-time "tech". In a word: impressive.

  2. Awaia (7:34)
  3. Wings (feat Daniel Broesecke) (7:14)
  4. Wings (Sepp remix) (7:09)
Review: After some promising releases by Doubtingthomas, Durrred, Yoshitaca and Ittetsu, Ukranian tech house hero Silat Beksi returns with the new one for Lille, France based Gaazol - created by Beunes William, Corton Axel and Molle Corentin. 'GAAZOL 004' is well worth your time: from the trippy and rolling A side cuts like "Anna" with its ethereal vibe, or the bass-driven and hypnotic bliss of "Awaia" with its subtle acid overtones. On the flip, he teams up with German producer Daniel Broesecke once again to follow up last year's massive "Get Some More". The track here is "Wings" which receives a wicked rework by Rominimal maestro Sepp (Uvar) who takes the track into truly arcane territory as always - you could imagine this one being played to the morning crowd at Sunwaves (but maybe next year!).

Meantime EP
Cat: NCSS 006. Rel: 11 Sep 20
  1. Deikh (7:43)
  2. Aerosol (7:03)
Review: Sukhumvit offshoot NCSS has scored something of a coup here, snapping up the first collaborative tracks from prolific tech-house veteran Nick Beringer (last seen on Burnski's high-flying Constant Black imprint) and rising star Sota (best known for his work on Ornate Music and Beringer's Rubisco label). A-side 'Deikh' is a bouncy delight, with the pair peppering a sturdy, rolling groove with bleeping electronics, tight organ riffs and sweat-soaked drum machine fills. They opt for a deeper, hazier sound on 'Aerosol', where hushed chords, undulating TB-303 acid lines and gentle electronic melodies slowly rise above a loose-limbed, spacey tech-house beat.

The Shin'yuu Various Artist EP
  1. Birdsmakingmachine - "Moorbeet" (6:06)
  2. Locic & Dan Formless - "No Laughing Matter" (9:04)
  3. Yama Music - "Back Where You Belong" (6:31)
  4. TIJN - "Nikkee" (7:14)
Review: This EP marks something of a departure for self-proclaimed "tripped-out micro-house" imprint Yama Music, which previously acted solely as an outlet for the fast-rising production duo of the same name. They're present on this EP of course, opening side B with the pulsing pads, weighty sub-bass and glitchy beats of "Back Where You Belong", but the majority of the tracks come courtesy of like-minded producers from around the Globe. Birdsmakingmachine make a big impression with the mind-altering acid bass and crunchy machine drums of "Moorbet", while Locic and Dan Formless successfully join forces on the simultaneously chunky, weighty and hypnotic "No Laughing Matter". Our pick of a very strong bunch is TIJN's closing cut, "Nikkee", which wraps a jazzy bassline and smooth drums in gorgeously warm and woozy sci-fi chords.

  1. Process

  3. Long Train
  4. Effect
Review:  The ever-prolific Burnski is back on Constant Sound with some upfront bumpers that once again demonstrate his standing as a leading light in the modern tech house movement. 'Process' manages to balance moody, melodic atmospherics with a rock solid rhythm section, while 'Systems' takes things in a decidedly more jacking, tracky direction. 'Long Train' keeps the pressure up with a mean low end and some whipcrack claps to made your head spin. 'Effect' finishes the set off with a sumptuous dub excursion that will appeal to all those who like Basic Channel headspace matched with a sturdy house groove.

  1. Yes No, Maybe So (9:50)
  2. Decisions (Martinez remix) (6:58)
  3. Decisions (8:15)
Review: Following up that terrific remix for homeboys Disuasiv a few months back on Curtea Veche, London based Romanian caLLy returns with this brand new killer which inaugurates new Ibiza based record store More Than Music's new label arm. It's more of the same ethereal tech-house that you've come to know from the man - these are the kind of rolling and understated grooves that will put you in a trance at Sunwaves on Mamaia Beach this summer. From the hypnotic and subtle groove of "Yes No, Maybe So" or when he really brings the funk on the bouncy and trippy tool "Decisions" which also gets a terrific rework by Concealed Sounds main man Martinez. The Copenhagen based Swede delivers some serious swing on one of his renowned concealment dubs.

  1. High Beams (7:02)
  2. High Beams (Cristi Cons remix) (7:40)
  3. Gear Shift (7:48)
  4. Future Memory (7:36)
Review: After previous outings on this label as well as Joule, American Camelia take charge of the fifth EP from Fake Society and does so with a superb late night mood. His grooves are sleek, futuristic, and glow with soft neon hues as pads glide by like long-tailed headlights on a rainy motorway drive deep into the darkness. The drums are always supple carriages on which you ride in sheer comfort, with deft melodic motifs colouring in the spaces left behind. Cristi Cons serves up a typically classy remix of deep techno minimalism that is heady and hypnotic. This is a warm, comforting EP that oozes style and class throughout.

  2. Cola (Dario D'Attis remix) (6:58)
  3. Cola (Franky Rizardo remix) (8:25)
  4. Cola (Mousse T Glitterbox mix) (6:38)
Review: There's a fair chance you'll already have heard "Cola", experienced production duo Camelphat's collaboration with vocalist Elderbrook. The original version, with its rumbling bass, atmospheric builds, subtle bassline house influence and "she sips the Coca-Cola" refrain, has become something of an anthem since first appearing on digital download earlier in the year. For this first vinyl release, Defected has packaged the now-familiar original mix with a trio of reworks. The most impressive of these comes from German veteran Mousse T. He brilliantly re-casts the track as a bumpin' chunk of celebratory disco-house complete with thrilling piano riffs and an elastic bassline.

Review: The latest drop on the consistently brilliant Kimochi comes from Eho Kates, a new project from Todd Gys and Brendon Moeller. While the names involved may be familiar, the resulting sound is something wholly fresh. Certainly, Moeller's rightly heralded instinct for dubwise processes is no great shock, but there's a playful sense of experimentation powering every element of this release from the scuffed, fractured rhythms of 'Anxiety Sensitivity' to the submerged echo chamber surrealism of 'Emotional Distress Endurance'. Inquisitive processes and otherworldly sound design shape out the whole record, shot through with the alluring mystery that defines Kimochi output overall.

  4. Wickham - "Mello" (7:01)
Review: East End Dubs' Eastenderz label keeps on turning out hugely functional but also charming dub tech that is stripped back to its bones and laced with funk. This new various artist EP packs a powerful punch from the off, with Floog laying down some vital kicks and whirring machine sounds to send any floor into overdrive. Cosmjn then takes us to another planet with his dreamy pads and Vlad Arapasu's 'Egoland' sounds like a classic Terry Francis cut from the mid-90s, so in other words, pure fire. There's no mucking around on 'Mello', a razor sharp closer with hi hats that would cut though steel.

  1. Soul Control (Palms Trax remix) (5:51)
Review: Back in 2014 Galcher Lustwerk and Palms Trax were both emergent artists making their first tentative steps into the scene. While they may be thoroughly distinct in their sounds, they found some crossover in an exchange of remixes, with Lustwerk's take on "Forever" appearing on Lobster Theremin. Palms Trax returned the favour with a version of Lustwerk's "Soul Control" which never saw the light of day until now. While it's certainly redolent of the earlier phase of Palms Trax's career, the effervescent musicality at the heart of the release is still completely in step with Palmsy as we know and love him today, replete with Lustwerk's inimitable laconic vocal delivery over the top.
