  2. Robosoul (6:28)
  3. Robochirp (6:56)
Review: It's been a long time between drinks for the Luck of Access label, which has been eerily silent since launching with an EP by Andrey Pushkarev 12 months ago. For release number two, the imprint has enlisted the services of Turkish producer Havantepe. He hits the ground running on A-side "Hooting Owl", a wonderfully attractive and emotion-rich affair that perfectly combines the drifting, mood-enhancing dreaminess of spacey deep house with the distinctive percussive pulse of Motor City influenced tech-house. Over on Side B, Havantepe proves his electro credentials, first via the intergalactic futurist bustle of "Robochirp", and then through the deeper and more starry-eyed wonder that is the melodious and life-affirming "Robosoul".

  1. Butt-Head (8:00)
  2. People That Make The Music (8:23)
  3. Thinking Of You (4:56)
Review: The inimitable Matthew Herbert presents some much needed reissues from the Phono back catalogue's 'Parts' series here, on Accidental's third volume of remastered classics. The series was part of an early wave of exploratory dance music, that paved the way for a style of deep house that still works its magic on dancefloors some 25 years later. Featuring the reduced boompty-funk of "Butt-Head" or "Thinking Of You" which will no doubt appeal to the new generation of minimal heads, to moments of sublime and evocative deepness as heard on "People That Make The Music" which is up there with other such classics like "See You On Monday" and many others featured in upcoming editions.

  1. Illi - "Lumiere" (8:04)
  2. Illi - "LDN 101" (7:42)
  3. Joe Rolet - "Stock Float" (6:41)
  4. Joe Rolet - "Sand On Saturn" (6:32)
Review: Spanish label Beeyou kicked off earlier this year with a sterling various artists release that offered up Laidlaw, Ben Ulrich and Kesh as proponents of peppy peak time minimal wares with a garage kink. The second release features Illi and Joe Rolet facing off with a side each, and on "Lumiere" Illi appears to be channeling a little of the magic you would expect to find on mid 00s Plus 8 Records, which is no bad thing. "LDN 101" meanwhile picks up the 2 step flex and matches it with the aesthetics of contemporary deep tech house. Joe Rolet has a heavy ambience hovering over the crafty programming of "Stock Float," while "Sand On Saturn" takes a more trippy, spaced out approach that sits just right on his crisp, inventive beats.

Cat: SBTL 014. Rel: 13 Dec 18
  1. Imaginary Forms (6:37)
  2. Gateway (6:36)
  3. Timeworn (8:26)
Review: Since making his debut back in 2012, Iulian Bivolaru has giddily charged between labels, showcasing his tech-house wares on such well-regarded imprints as Visionquest, Infuse and, most recently, Constant Sound. Here the Romanian label-hopper adds another imprint to his belt via a tidy three-tracker on Subtil. There's something wonderfully wonky about opener "Imaginary Forms", a druggy but pleasingly melodious mid-tempo workout rich in snappy machine drums and skewed analogue electronics, though the more foreboding and trippy "Gateway" is arguably equally as inebriated. Over on side B you'll find the delightfully spacey "Timeworn", a hypnotic and chiming affair that sits somewhere between IDM era ambient techno and mind-altering late night tech-house.

  1. Apologies For The Delay (7:46)
  2. Land Of The Living (7:15)
  3. Apologies For The Delay (Traumer remix) (6:47)
Review: Since returning to action in 2017 after a four-year break, Michael James has been scarily prolific. In fact, "Apologies For The Delay" is the British producer's seventh solo release in the last 18 months. It is, of course, more than up to scratch. He begins with the bass-heavy, off-kilter tech-house swing of "Apologies For The Delay", where spacey pads and intergalactic electronics drift around a bumping groove, before offering a slightly funkier and dreamier take on tech-house via "Land of the Living". Over on the flip, Traumer has his evil way with "Apologies For The Delay", offering up a slightly smoother and heavier version that makes great use of sharp analogue bass, fluttering synth riffs and some suitably spacey electronics.

  1. Christian Jay - "Reform"
  2. Christian Jay - "Deactivating HAL"
  3. Rob Amboule - "Something For Thomas"
  4. Rob Amboule - "Swedgin On The Corner"
Review: After previously helming the second NorthSouth release alongside Bilal, Berlin-based minimal house maverick Christian Jay returns to the burgeoning label with more of his distinctive grooves that draw as much on bass-heavy garage and dubstep as they do on stripped back 4/4. The tempo is ramped up on "Reform," which features a plethora of wriggling sound design flourishes to accentuate the subtle swing on the track, while "Deactivating HAL" places the same sound palette in a more crafty 2-step framework that ranks among the most distinctive tracks Jay has produced to date. On the flipside. Rob Amboule follows up strong turns on 20:20 Vision, Nixwax and OSMAN with his own deep-diving dancefloor constructions. There's an irresistible insistence to the drums on B1 cut "Something For Thomas," while "Swedgin On The Corner" switches stance for a dreamy yet uptempo trip loaded with misty-eyed pads and other such cosmic delights.

  2. Casey Spillman - "Simply Focus" (6:37)
  3. Jhobei - "Club Beige" (6:57)
  4. Ben Balance - "Funk Tower" (7:35)
Review: Itchy tech house label NCSS returns with a trio of new artists all weaving their way into the top charts, and if the material is sounding this good then we're pretty sure we'll be hearing a lot more from them soon! Newcomer Jhobei rolls through with "Do Milk", a creamy, synth-heavy house killer with a slap-up bass, followed by Casey Spillman's "Simply Focus", a freaky tech roller with all sorts of minimal nuances going off in its mix. On the flip, Jhobei returns with "Club Beige", an aqueous roller that sounds a little like the Cab Drivers, while Ben Balance's "Funk Tower" unleashes a dark, muddy bassline interlocked with subtle bursts of sc-fi goodness.

  2. Resolve (7:27)
  3. Aftermath (7:05)
  4. Kudzu (7:13)
Review: Diego Krause has been a busy boy this year, bringing his brand of skewed house/techno fusion to Unison Wax, Rawax, the Blind Box Series and Sukhumvit. "Aftermath" sees him return to the latter label with four more floor-friendly offerings. Krause first wraps glistening deep space chords around a bumpin' house groove on "Straight To The Dome", before reaching for a sub-heavy analogue bassline and mangled vocal samples on the tech-house/speed garage fusion of "Resolve". Over on side B, title track "Aftermath" is a warm and rolling fusion of drifting warehouse riffs and chunky tech-house bottom end, while "Kudzu" delivers a tasty mixture of classic deep house chords, toasty bass and bustling drums.

  4. Itaapella (3:24)
Review: Can anyone nail a slender, cheeky groove like Lil'Mark? Judging by his track record on Classic, Apollo and more, we'd argue surely not, and this EP on Nicetraxuk is further fuel for the fire. "Inevtiable" kicks things off with a catchy, bouncy bassline and tightly shuffled drums that tell you you're in vintage Lil'Mark territory, while "Be Afraid" gets into a slightly spookier headspace without losing that infectious funk. "F_ It" has all kinds of playful rubbery horn sounds pinging around the minimal beat, and then "Itaapella" gives you the heavily processed vocals from the track to get creative with.
