  1. Renaissance (6:47)
  2. Universal (6:14)
  3. Phantom (5:43)
Review: More from James "Burnski" Burnham under the Instinct alias, a pseudonym he seems to utilize for forthright, no-nonsense club tracks. There's naturally plenty of playable material to be found on this fourth Instinct EP. First turn your attention to A-side "Renaissance", where slowly rising, progressive house style orchestration and dreamy deep house pads cluster around punchy two-step beats and starburst electronics. Turn to the flipside and you'll find the swinging but driving tech-house chunkiness of "Universal", as well as the sub-heavy trip that is two-step tech-house cut "Phantom". That cut boasts some particularly attractive soulful vocal samples that seem to drift across the sound space at key moments.

Module EP (12")
Cat: SM 005. Rel: 24 Aug 18
  1. Module (8:01)
  2. Angular (8:52)
  3. Goliath (7:55)
Review: Since he made his debut on Diynamic back in 2009, Mulen co-founder iO has shown an aptitude for crafting killer singles in a variety of underground house and techno sub-genres. This three-tracker for Slowdy Mowdy finds him exploring off-kilter tech-house pastures, wrapping funk-fuelled basslines and trippy electronic flourishes around some fine, floor-friendly grooves. We're particularly enjoying the tough-but-funky tech-house chunkiness of A-side "Module", which reminded us a little of some of Swag's vintage early 2000s productions. Elsewhere, "Angular" is a smoother but still funky tech-house roller, while "Goliath" sees the talented Ukranian wrap computer bleeps and spacey electronic textures around a rubbery, shoulder-swinging rhythm track.

  2. Tim Karbon - "Chapter VI" (6:04)
  3. Hiroaki Oba - "Chapter VII" (6:12)
  4. Shizka - "Chapter VIII" (4:16)
Review: Vox Populi's Field Works Vol.II sees the Berlin based label travelling to different parts of the world in order to collect sounds and archive some of the finest musical traditions. This record is the result of a trip to Japan led by Swiss anthropologist and label founder Fred Scharf. It was inspired by academic methods: particularly ethnomusicology and incorporates everything from field recordings, studio recordings, religious rituals, fighting championships and even wedding ceremonies. From the slo-mo acid of Japan Blues (Berceuse Heroique) seductive "Chapter V" to Frenchman Tim Karbon's exotic polythyrhms that hypnotise you on "Chapter VI" and Shizka (aka Inoue Shirabe) getting into some abstract groove theory on his splendid offering "Chapter VIII".

  3. Feedback Loop (Bedouin remix) (7:33)
  4. Feedback Loop (Mad Professor Ariwa dub 1) (4:43)
Review: British electronic music veteran Damian Lazarus recently returned with his band project The Ancient Moons for a new full length entitled Heart Of Sky - which combined cosmic world influences with his love for '80s soul and funk artists such as Loose Ends, Luther Vandross, Maze and Gwen Guthrie. The first single is the evocative and heart wrenching slow-burner "Feedback Loop". It also receives a bunch of terrific remixes, which come courtesy of New York City's Serge Devant who delivers a sleek tech-house perspective, Bedouin's remix nails that woozy and esoteric Crosstown Rebels vibe perfectly but best of all is the legendary Mad Professor who delivers his version: the Ariwa dub 1.

  1. I Used To (Dixon retouch) (7:02)
  2. Pulse (v1) (10:05)
Review: Innervisions co-founder and tech-house behemoth Dixon is the latest remixer to get his hands on a track from LCD Soundsystem's 2017 album, American Dream. His version of "I Used To" is closer in feel to James Murphy and company's original version than his own grandiose and melodious tech-house epics, though the Berlin producer's decision to include some seriously epic breakdowns and build-ups suggests that the mix could not only land with his audience, but become something of an anthem in clubs around the globe. Arguably even better is flipside bonus cut "Pulse (V1)", a wonderfully melodious and atmospheric instrumental that sounds like it was inspired by NYC minimalists such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass.

  2. Chroma (6:34)
  3. From A Past Life (8:07)
Review: Midlands retrovert Mat Cutler aka Lone returns on Ambivert Tools Volume One. Inspired in no small part by the rich seam of house that he's been excavating with his fine Magicwire imprint, this is where the guy shows you all once again just how dusty and lo-fi things can actually get. Starting off with the early nineties rave stomp of "Crush Mood", on the flip there's some deeper strains of classic throwback sounds in the form of the lovely "Chroma" with its neon lit synths and vintage drum computer sounds working in perfect harmony while "From A Past Life" calls to mind Derrick Carter's Oneiro project from the nineties on this rolling and hypnotic jam which is so damn lush!

  1. Slap (Janeret remix) (7:16)
  2. Just Music (Michael James remix) (7:39)
  3. Rara (Swoy remix) (6:59)
Review: Mancini's Bang Bang EP earlier this year had us impressed. The veteran Parisian producer and DJ now returns with a bunch of wicked remixes from his recent discography - and he's honed in the finest local talents to help get the job done right. First up is Joule chief Janeret, who delivers a dubby and hypnotic rendition of "Slap" that's fuelled by some powerful 303 attitude. Ibiza's Michael James (Constant Sound/Mulen Records) gets into deeper and swing-fuelled territory that's perfectly suited to the afterhours on his version of "Just Music" and finally on the flip we have got Swoy (Politics Of Dancing/Djebali) with the some sublime minimal boompty business displayed finely on his rework of "Rara".

String Theory (180 gram vinyl 12" repress)
Cat: OSC 12. Rel: 08 Oct 18
  1. String Theory
  2. Poisoned Words
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Mandar are back on Oscillat Music following their stunning five-disc LP from last year, and the deep house super group are sounding as vital as ever. "String Theory" holds court over the A side and promises to be the soundtrack to many a heart-stirring moment under starry skies this summer. The titular strings are a powerful force in this track, bringing a classy brand of emotion to the slinky dancefloor tones Mandar are best known for. "Poisoned Worlds" is a deeper club cut that places the emphasis on crafty drum science for after hours crew, providing a neat balance to the show-stopping tones of the A side.

Review: Inaugurating new deep house imprint Aesthetic are a bunch of current heroes of Europe's deep house underground. The EP kicks off with ascendant Leeds based DJ Niko Maxen (Shadow Sanctuary/Fantastic Friends) who delivers the hypnotic boompty business of "Busheila", the always impressive Nick Beringer (Rubisco) delivering some sublime tech-house of the dubbier variety on "Unit Sphere" and fellow Berliner with the best alias ever Stevn.aint.leavn (Beste Modus) with the emotive swing-fuelled antics of "Pinter". On the flip, Sy gets back to the delay drenched Basic Channel/Deepchord influenced side of the things, on the rather entrancing "Cosmic Waves" which was our pick of the bunch - but be assured they're all fairly tight grooves on Aesthetic 001.

  1. Love Letters From Sicily (9:35)
  2. Hope (John Digweed & Nick Muir remix) (7:38)
Review: Originally featured on their celebratory XV compilation back in 2017, Berlin clubbing institution Watergate have reissued one of the the standout tracks here by Hamburger Matthias Meyer and Berlin's Sebastian Waack aka Ryan Davis. The track "Hope" in its original form was a lush and hypnotic drifter, geared for some life-affirming moments on the dancefloor. The rework featured here by the legendary John Digweed takes the track into much more adrenalised and entrancing territory, with its trance arpeggios and tight rhythm arrangement making for great dancefloor dynamics - but the breathtaking orchestral arrangements of the original are left intact. New track "Love Letters From Sicily" could equally have had a home on All Day I Dream - its ethereal daydream qualities make it perfect for a Sunday afternoon rooftop party downtown.

Review: Surely one of the finest operators in the UK underground, Miles Atmospheric released his last album under his own name Miles Sagnia back in 2014, and now he finally returns to the long player format to unfurl his vision of deep, driving techno. This time he's appearing on Finale Sessions, and it's the perfect home for his thoughtfully sculpted cuts. There are more outwardly mellow moments such as "Mensura," and the utterly gorgeous "Peace," but there is also plenty of space afforded to the sharper end of his creative transmissions. "Elysium" is a dense, rippling throwdown that touches on many different aspects of contemporary house and techno, while "Rise" offers up a refreshing variation on the acid house template. Once again, Miles Atmospheric demonstrates why he's such a vital, if sometimes overlooked, force in the UK underground.
