  3. Crossmods - "Jive" (5:25)
  4. Edmundy - "Aurora Borealis" (9:00)
  5. J Wax - "Digits" (6:32)
Review: More from Ben Rothes and Schmitt's Dundee-based Hilltown Disco imprint, which has so far failed to disappoint since launching in early 2017. The most dominant artist on this third label outing is extended family member Crossmods. The producer makes a big impression on the A-side, serving up two bustling electro workouts (of which acid-fired opener "Visualised" is our pick) and a pleasingly spacey 4/4 number that sits somewhere between rolling deep house, Vangelis and pitched-down Detroit techno. You'll find more far-sighted space exploration on the flip, where Edmundy's surging rocket ship of a cut, "Aurorea Borealis" is joined by Hilltown Disco regular J Wax's EBM-esque late night throb-job "Digits".

Ijzeren Rots (hand-stamped 1-sided 12" repress)
Cat: DIGWAH 03. Rel: 10 May 18
  1. Ijzeren Rots (8:32)
Review: Since launching in 2006, the men or women of mystery behind the sneaky Digwah series have delivered a couple of sought-after, single-sided 12" singles that blend familiar samples with rock solid tech-house grooves. Predictably, this third volume in the series sticks closely to the blueprint, wrapping twinkling electric piano motifs and a restless, looped bassline around a rhythm track rich in jazzy hi-hats, snappy drum machine snares and tough, locked-in kick-drums. It's arguably closer to deep house than its predecessors, with the tactile and warming samples - lifted, it seems, from the late '60s West Coast rock record - helping to create a rolling, late night feel. The previous Digwah releases sold out quickly, so you'll have to act fast to secure a copy of this one.

  1. DK - "Whales On Fire" (10:29)
  2. Miller - "432OT" (8:03)
  3. Miffy - "Excuse Me" (6:59)
Review: This inaugural release from Real Gang Records' X series is notable for including the first ever solo material from Miffy and Miller, a duo best known for their collaborative releases on Draft Label, In Haus Wax and, most recently, Jack's House Records. You'll find their contributions on the flipside, with Miffy's loose, deep and swinging "Excuse Me" tickling our fancy a little more than the locked-in drug-chug of Miller's "432OT". Arguably best of all though, is extended A-side "Whales On Fire", a bumpin', heads-down, Romanian style tech-house epic from Dipp and Kevin Cook under the DK alias. With its restless electronic loops, hushed vocal samples and clandestine aural textures, it's emphatically intoxicating.

Cat: DBT 101. Rel: 04 Jun 18
  1. Paradise Village (8:08)
  2. Brother Other (7:30)
  3. Buri Planet (7:10)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Doublet is the production moniker of friends and musical partners Tomoki Tamura and Tuccillo, previously releasing together on other labels, they have come together to form the new eponymously named Doublet imprint as a channel for their own music. Tomoki and his Holic Trax label have long been serving up solid house music whilst Tuccillo has conjured up numerous Beatport chart toppers on labels like 2020Vision, Visionquest and Holic Trax. Here their unique style brings you back from classic house music to future minimalism and is sure to fill you with joy. Up first is the title track, a charming house shuffler with woozy synths, light footed percussion and skipping rhythms that give an off kilter and deep dancefloor vibe. 'Brother Other' is a slightly more physical affair with lumpy beats, tense synth crescendos and stiff snares that really encourage you to shake your limbs. Lastly, 'Buri Planet' is a deep and sensual number with clever vocals samples adding an element of pained soul, rubbery bass bringing warmth and golden synths and acid squelches building yet more character. This is accomplished, alive sounding house music that really does sound fresh. Doublet, then, is already off to a winning start. Vinyl Only.

  3. World In The Middle (6:45)
  4. Trigtime (7:24)
Review: Romanian rising star Dragosh Halangescu has had a consistent career spanning the last decade, appearing everywhere from powerhouse imprints like VIVa Music, Desolat and Circus and these days going further underground with appearances on Curtea Veche, Memoria and Otaku. This gives you an indication of where he's at these days. His new offering entitled Paradox Action Vivid comes courtesy of promising new Spanish imprint No Time For Love, that has previously issued works by Egal 3 aka Vid, Gabriele Mancino and Iuly.B. Rolling and hypnotic afterhours faire here on the minimalist tip - as you'd have probably expected. In particular the trance inducing esoterica of "Obliu" or the reductionist mini-funk of B side cut "Trigtime" which will appeal to fans of DBX or Pantytec.

  1. Garden Of Cyrus (8:17)
  2. Caper Tran (8:40)
Review: Given that Music Man regular Petar Dundov and Systematic boss Marc Romboy are both hugely successful producers in their own right, you'd expect this first collaborative release to be rather good. It is, of course, with pleasingly melodic A-side "Garden of Cyrus" leading the way. While the track's muted (but heavy) drums and squeezable acidic bassline provide the energy, it's the duo's layered electronic melody lines that really catch the ear. If you're in the mood for something darker and more suitable for pitch-black Berlin basements, creepy and hypnotic flipside "Caper Tran" should more than fit the bill.

  1. The Wave Function (7:08)
  2. Solastalgia (6:41)
  3. The Unavoidable Consequence Of You (6:00)
  4. Tradition No 3 (6:24)
Review: Consistently vibrating at a frequency beyond the conventional realms of house and techno, UntilMyHeartStops returns with a particularly captivating transmission from furtive jazz-peddling beatsmith Tom Ellis. This release serves as an opportunity for the Freerotation regular to move into a techno-inflected space without losing his handle on delicate, evocative pathways through the minimal milieu. The subtle throb of "Solastalgia" sounds especially at home on UMHS, hinging around snaking machine rhythms and a buttery bassline that could easily go on for days without growing tiresome. Watch out for "The Unavoidable Consequence Of You" though - a feisty party heater that finds Ellis dipping his toe into the sample / edit snakepit and pulling out a python.

  1. Cafe Del Mar (Tale Of Us Renaissance remix) (8:18)
  2. Cafe Del Mar (Nalin & Kane remix) (9:46)
Review: Energy 52 aka Paul Schmitz-Moormann and Harald Bluechel inaugurated the semail Frankfurt trance label Eye Q with the anthem "Cafe Del Mar" in 1993, named after the long running Ibiza bar and institution. It was the soundtrack to the rave culture movie Human Traffic in 1999 and later went on to be voted #1 in Mixmag's 2001 '500 Best Tracks Ever' list. Here, Renaissance recruit Tale of Us for the second edition of their quarterly-century celebrations. The modern experts in dancefloor drama were sure to deliver a stunning remix, that works the truly evocative qualities of the original into a shape for modern dancefloors - and it further enhances the levels of tension and suspense. Next up on the flip, German legends Nalin & Kane's remix from 1998 appears, delivering a zeitgeist from trance music's heyday.

  2. Methods In Madness (2:58)
  3. Instrument (Soul Capsule On It) (7:19)
  4. Instrument (Soul Capsule Off It) (6:29)
Review: Now here's a classic. Originally released at the turn of the millennium, Music For Freaks reissue the Methods In Madness EP by the label honchos themselves - Freaks aka Justin Harris and Luke Solomon. Featuring the boompty Chi-town shuffle of "Look Behind You" dub by local heroes Tim Shumaker and Tim Kvasnosky aka Home & Garden - who've been fairly quiet in recent years. The slo-mo acid trip that is the title track rounds up the A side. On the flip, we have two versions of "Instrument" by master minimalists Soul Capsule aka Baby Ford and Thomas Melchior. The On It version is a bumpy form of cyclical hypnotism that you could only expect from the respected pairing. The Off It version strips things down even more, left with a simple breakbeat and bass pulsations.

Haze Phenomenon EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: EQV 06. Rel: 23 Apr 18
  1. Shelf Cloud (7:40)
  2. Halo (6:30)
  3. Haze Phenomenon (8:30)
Review: Rising Greek producer G.U.S. steps up on Equivalence with some pumped up vintage techno sounds that take more than a few cues from the UK. "Shelf Cloud" strikes a fine balance between tough and dreamy, using a twitchy set of drums moving at a decent pace and flooding them with atmospheric pads and a slice of vocal that forms a central hook to the track. "Halo" goes even deeper into British territory with its chopped up breakbeat funk calling to mind the dexterous sample magic of Stasis, and then "Haze Phenomenon" heads into deep tech house territory riding a pumped up shuffle beat and swooping pads.

  3. The Key (6:41)
  4. Beyond (5:47)
Review: Having shared his last two releases with fellow rising star Henry Hyde, Chris Geschwinder finally gets to showcase his wares over two sides of wax. He hits his stride straight away with "Foxfeeder", a rather fine slab of dreamy tech-house underpinned by a deliciously hooky bassline, before diving deeper into early UK tech-house waters via the elongated chords and dreamy, glassy-eyed pads of "Axur". Over on the flip, Geschwinder first raises the tempo (and our energy levels) with the rolling goodness of "The Key", then daydreams about personal space travel on the acid-flecked deep electro shimmer of "Beyond". As first full EPs go, the young German's is a bit of a gem.
