Cong Burn 05
Cong Burn 05 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: CB 05. Rel: 01 Jul 19
  1. Chekov - "Math" (Squared mix) (5:26)
  2. Doppelate - "Rreal" (5:59)
  3. Camin - "Duct" (4:37)
  4. Howes - "BED" (6:07)
Review: On the A1 Chekov follows up their moves on Peach Discs and Timedance with a proper peak timer, they've been described by Ben UFO as 'king of the build up' and that's evident on this one. At the A2 London's Doppelate makes their Cong Burn debut with an elegant tech-house roller. Fresh from Russia's underground is Camin, on this, his debut 12" release he drops a useful tool which squeezes between electro and techno. Cong Burn founder Howes closes the B side with some warm hypnosis that could have landed in the golden era of Workshop.

Cong Burn 03
Cong Burn 03 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: CB 03. Rel: 16 Jul 18
  1. Chekov - "Spring" (5:34)
  2. Duckett - "Lost In Israel" (5:06)
  3. Lack - "Track 3" (8:21)
  4. Haddon - "Anabiosis" (3:00)
Review: Cong Burn continues to exercise one of the most promising instincts for future-minded music on this, their third release. It's surprising they haven't done more previously, considering the maturity of their curation, but either way the quality remains at an all time high here, leading in with some light and liquefied 4/4 sonics from Chekov before pirouetting into one of Duckett's illustrious abstractions around the techno blueprint. Label regular Lack is back on side B with the stern and punchy "Track 3," and then Haddon finishes the record off with "Anabiosis," a densely textured, slow creeping trip of a track.

Burnt (12")
Cat: HF 001. Rel: 02 Jun 15
  1. Burnt (6:11)
  2. Hard To Breathe (6:44)
Review: If the smiley face clad centre label wasn't a sizeable enough clue, Happy Family is a new project from New York staples Eric Duncan and Justin Vandervolgen which sees the pair try their hand at acid house. Both are closely associated with disco edits of course, but if you've seen either DJ you'll know they are well up on all forms of dance music. This expertise is deployed perfectly on the two tracks here, with "Burnt" a relentless exercise in strobelit 303 madness that is a no brainer for the sweatiest part of a DJ set. They tone it down a bit on "Hard To Breathe" which despite the title is an altogether looser production with plenty of room between the tumbling drums and hypnotic lead synth lines.

Muck EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MGM 06. Rel: 21 Oct 19
  1. Alpha Decay
  2. Tachyon
  3. Muck
  4. Stocha
Review: The sixth installment on Malin Genie's self-titled label welcomes Will & Ink resident Yaleesa Hall into the fold. Regular collaborators Malin and Yaleesa have turned out plenty of joint 12"s in the past on Will & Ink and this very label, and they sound more comfortable and sonically aligned than ever on this mighty record. There's no messing with "Alpha Decay," a loose and lysergic dubby techno workout. "Tachyon" orbits a similar soundworld, but shears the fat away for a minimal palette that sounds powerful echoing around the ample space in the mix. "Muck" slips into freaky after hours house territory, and "Stocha" drops a massive Basic Channel dub techno chord around a whisper of a beat to devastating effect.

Cat: HAMENECC 002. Rel: 12 Jan 21
  1. Track 1 (8:07)
  2. Track 2 (9:20)
Review: Italo-Bosnian outfit HAMENEC return to their own self-titled label for a second much anticipated EP. After the minimalism of the first one, this time out they turn to more dreamy 90s house fair to open up. 'Track 1' is a driving affair with lush pads and corrugated bass that carries you away into the clouds. 'Track 2' then gets more twisted, with a rubbery bassline and electro tinged beats all run through with some flashes of slippery acid. Both are high class tunes for crowds who like it stylish.

Works On Sunday EP
Cat: FUSE 018 . Rel: 08 Jul 15
  1. Mind Blank (8:43)
  2. Works On Sunday (vinyl only) (7:47)
  3. Works On Sunday (Enzo Siragusa & Seb Zito remix) (6:44)
Review: Moscow Records boss Archie Hamilton appears this time on Enzo Siragusa's Fuse London imprint with these slices of rolling, Latin-infused tech-house for the beach party. This is the kind of stuff that lovers of Mindshake and Rawthentic will be all over. First up "Mind Blank" brings the tough yet sultry attitude that you could imagine playing peak time at Amnesia. "Works On Sunday" takes the tempo down a notch or two for something more suited to the afterhours, but just as sexy. There's also a remix of this on the flip by none other than label boss Siragusa with Seb Zito keeping the afterhours vibe intact but with a druggier, minimal take on things.

  1. Driven To Distraction (7:52)
  2. Telegram (7:44)
  3. Channelled (vinyl Only) (7:43)
Review: Moscow Records boss Archie Hamilton is a long time friend of the FUSE London family, having previously contributed to a number of releases. Driven To Distraction, though, is his first FUSE outing since 2015. Interestingly, there's quite a bit of surprising variety amongst the three tracks; compare, for example, the shuffling tech-house grooves and flamenco guitars of B-side "Channelled", with the title track's bouncy, deep house/acid house fusion. "Telegram", where wilder TB-303 acid lines and dubbed-out riffs ride an undulating, late night groove, is also rather nifty. In other words, it's a solid EP containing tracks tailor-made for different dancefloor situations.

Muscle House EP
Muscle House EP (140 gram red & yellow splatter with transparent clear vinyl 12")
Cat: M 3003. Rel: 05 Oct 15
  1. Drone (5:16)
  2. The Colonel (4:52)
  3. Muscle House (6:21)
  4. um9 (5:52)
Review: Number 7 in Music is Love's sister label MIL arrives and throws the spotlight on rising Irish producer Chris Hanna, last seen impressing for Ejeca's Exploris label. Opening proceedings on Muscle House is "Drone", a rough and distorted track that is narrated by the constant synth buzzing above the heavy groove laid down by Hanna. Complementing this, "The Colonel" maintains a peak time mood with some furiously paced drums cannoning around the mix atop a heavily sequenced bassline. Title track "Muscle House" opens the B-side, offering Hanna the chance to show off his prowess at acid lines, whilst closer "UM9" veers off into epic, emotive territory without losing any of the rugged, rhythmic physicality shown throughout the 12".

  1. Divine Link (7:33)
  2. Divine Link (Arapu remix) (8:04)
  3. Metal Flesh (7:35)
  4. Memory Trigger (7:28)
Review: The Kapture label out of Romania have waited nearly 18 months to follow up their debut release from Mihai Pol. That one sold out in a flash so fans have be more than eager for further minimal goodness and Haokah comes through. His sinewy sound is propelled by rubbery drums that leave the rasping synths, weird vocals and razor sharp hi hats to take centre stage opener 'Divine Link'. The Arapu is more smooth and serene for those zoned out late night sessions and a couple of more wonky and unhinged numbers on the flip make this a perfectly versatile affair.

Cat: MJCR 001. Rel: 19 Sep 16
  1. Sequential Circus
  2. Just On For The Ride
  3. Charlie Don't Surf
  4. Hotshot
Review: REPRESS ALERT: 'Something From Nothing' is a four tracker that fuses techno sensibility with house swagger, a voice calling to Detroit's Second Wave while a hand beckons the shadowy waters of house.
Hearts Of Darkness are immersed in late nights and smoke-filled basements, with past form seeing them play Fabric and Bugged Out!. An unhealthy loyalty to vintage hardware and long forgotten code means their music is analogue, not for fashion, but because it feels right.
On the A, 'Sequential Circus' is purest machine funk as a driving bass bubbles into self-oscillation. Next, 'Just On For The Ride' bounces to a millennial deep house swing. Flip it for a dense future dub workout in 'Charlie Don't Surf,' then 'Hotshot' closes with a pad soaked vibe for the discerning warm up. A melting pot EP with all the right ingredients.
'Something From Nothing' opens the door to Hearts Of Darkness. Step inside.

  3. Don't Stop
  4. Pace Of The Are
Review: The Ti-Rex crew widens the net for their third release with the introduction of hitherto unknown producer Henrocic. The release begins with the ranging shuffle of "Al Chiaro Di Luna", a stripped down affair peppered with haunting flecks of jazz and a strung out late morning atmosphere. Label boss Ti Es then steps up with a remix of "Don't Stop" throwing down some tougher drum tones and working the reverb before the original version plunges down into an intimate space populated by natural grooves and strange sounds alike. "Pace Of The Are" then delivers a finishing blow with snaking percussion and gnarly bass tones.

  1. Locked Out (7:20)
  2. The Red Face Roller (6:53)
  3. Start Again (5:46)
  4. Leg Le Friend (8:19)
Review: Henry Hyde is back on his usual stomping ground of NorthSouth with some peppy club workouts to get wiggy to. "Locked Out" has plenty of tripped out tones bubbling around the sturdy, Lately bass-fed groove, while "The Red Face Roller" gets more playful with the synth lines without losing the steady, sleek rhythm section. "Start Again" switches the mood but retains the palette, making great use of a grinding bass note to anchor the sprightly blips and dubby bleeps up top. "Leg Le Friend" goes further into the influence of early UK techno with its ethereal pads and intricate melodic elements, capturing the kind of vibe you might have heard on Likemind with a cheeky modern twist.

  6. Bilal - "Electric Cafe" (6:09)
  7. Unai Trotti - "Delta Papa" (7:12)
  8. Voigtmann - "Infinity" (5:51)
Review: The Drifted Flow label made an early move in 2015 with a release from Tommy Vicari Jnr, but now returns with an entirely different premise - an eight-track double pack of fresh, invigorating minimal house jams from lesser-known and adventurous producers. Henry Hyde gets the collection off to a strong start with the wobbly funk of "Perchin," all dirty bass wobble and loose swinging rhythms. Elsewhere Martinez flirts with the crooked thump of electro, Alicia Hush wriggles through an abstraction of garage and Bilal channels a little of the Boogizm magic you might expect from S-Max or Fym. Overall, it's a release loaded with personality and flair for minimal spinners wanting some spicier ingredients for their mix.

  1. Day Three (7:50)
  2. Day Five (7:42)
  3. Day Seven (3:00)
Review: Matthew Herbert has been busy dropping reissues of his most treasured house gems from the '90s, but let's not forget he's more focused on experimental pastures these days. Foom clearly know, and what better label to carry some intriguing electro-acoustic interplays from the maverick marvel? These pieces were all the product of a week-long residency in Berlin, recorded in front of (and sometimes with the participation of) an audience, and they veer from the bouncing synthesized freakery of "Day Three" to the clangorous baroque composition of "Day Five" and then the minimal experimentation of "Day Seven". There's still no one that does it like Herbert.

Cat: 80801. Rel: 22 Aug 13
  1. The Illuminations (12" version)
  2. The Illuminations (Drumsolo)
  3. The Illuminations (Arpsolo)
Review: After the abrasive nature of Gone Feral, James Holden delivers another 12" of singular techno abstraction that bolsters the Border Community main man's intention to surge ahead with starkly original material. "The Illuminations" is a fast-paced thriller that mixes analogue mischief into psychedelic leanings, leaning on a constantly surging rhythmic intention as a sturdy backbone for long-form synth tweaking of a resolutely hand made nature. On the flip you can lose yourself in the pure drum workout of the "Drumsolo" mix, where the frenetic patterns make for a potent techno tool, or alternatively you can cut loose the percussive anchors and drift off on the ambient wonderment of the "Arpsolo".

  1. Holdie Gawn - "Gleech Huis" (11:56)
  2. Micawber - "Parsec Telemetry" (9:20)
Review: London-based, Greek minimal tech house aficionados Holdie Gawn & Micawber return to present the tenth edition on their beloved Sylphe imprint. It's a limited edition affair as per usual, so don't sleep on this one. On the A side, Gawn (aka Kreon) serves up the tripped-out early morning reductions of "Gleech Huis"- the sort of oddball groove you could imagine the likes of Rhadoo playing at an ungodly hour of the morning. On the flip, it's over to Micawber, who is otherwise known as Alex Celler - so you know you're in for a treat courtesy of this true master of the art. His boompty minimal funk jam "Parsec Telemetry" is much more upbeat and less abstract than his usual work, and channels the early vibe of classic Daniel Bell.

More Than This: Remixes Part 1
  1. Cohesive (Robag Wruhme Bokkler Ludd NB) (6:59)
  2. Eins (Jonathan Kaspar remix) (8:06)
Review: German producer Andre Hommen, a longstanding affiliate of Dennis Ferrer's Objektivity imprint, presents two remixes from his recent More Than This LP released earlier this year. Featured here are the first of two special remix packages released via Hommen's own label - These Eyes. More Than This Remixes Pt. 1 includes reworks from two staples of the esteemed Kompakt Records: the legendary Robag Wruhme brings his unmistakable sound to the remix of 'Cohesive' on the A side, which is a glitchy yet ultra deep minimal house workout, followed by ascendant Cologne-based producer Jonathan Kaspar's rendition of ;Eins' on the flip. This one goes for a more subdued tone, giving the track's elements room in the mix for a contemplative listen - proper mood music.
