  3. Dave Aju - "Get It"
  4. Frivolous - "Little Devils"
Review: From the label: When trends in music can come and go in the blink of an eye, ten years is a long time to stay relevant, passionate and real on the frontline. From its roots in the Parisian club scene by way of its spiritual home at Fuse in Brussels and so on to the globe-trotting, multi-faceted entity that it is today, Lessizmore is living proof of how to do a decade right. The fundamental heartbeat of this European house and techno institution is the maverick music that its affiliated artists make. Of course what the label sounds like now is not necessarily what the label sounded like back in 2006, but it's telling that some of the original characters are still with the label to this day, while many are long time members of the LIZM family that have joined the ranks over the years. In piecing together this compilation, the idea from label founders Jessica Bossuyt and Pierre Noisiez was simply to represent where their brainchild is at right now, from guests at their events in the early days to more recent collaborators of all kinds. Borrowed Identity kicks off the second EP with a smoothly rendered vision of contemporary deep house housing a poignant message at its core, while San Proper follows it up with his irrepressible personality positively leaping out of the track in a fit of live instrumentation and unbridled psychedelic funk. Dave Aju too is an artist it's hard to mistake, his cool and deadly vocals sitting amongst a sleek club construction that ranks among his most DJ-ready tracks to date. Always a trusted source of unconventional magic both in the studio and on the stage, Frivolous is on hand to demonstrate how to be playful with wild sound design and still come out with a killer party track.

Code North (12")
Cat: OSM 002. Rel: 11 Jun 18
  1. Code North (5:59)
  2. Sohallo (5:52)
  3. Live Needs Dialog (6:09)
Review: With a name like Philipp Boss, one commands a certain level of respect - naturlich! The Frankfurt Am Main based producer has affiliations with local minimal house royalty like Hoer, La Pena, Pager and city institution Gosu, so he ain't messin' around. His next one comes courtesy of fellow Hessen homeboy Baba Osman's imprint. The Code North EP features a bunch of killer retro inspired jams that follow in the tradition of local heroes - from Anthony Rother to fellow contemporaries like the Traffic crew. The soulful analogue funk of the title track will no doubt bear comparisons to Dopplereffekt/Japanese Telecom, while there's funky-minimal-bleep house on the bumpin' "Sohallo" up next. On the flip, he bridges the gap between the two styles on the late night vocoder antics of "Live Needs Dialog".

Apex Of The Sun's Way (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: O/O 001. Rel: 26 Jan 15
  1. Apex Of The Sun's Way
  2. Solar Poise
Review: Refined selector and esteemed producer, Steve Braiden breaks out on his own with the Off Out label after some excellent releases for the likes of Rush Hour and Joy Orbison's now defunct Doldrums label. It's a good day when there is some new Braiden productions to soak up, and hopefully the establishment of Off Out will see them appear with more regularity in the future. As an opening statement, Apex Of The Sun's Way is a powerful one indeed! The title track is characterised by the sort of rhythmic poise we have come to expect from a Braiden production, with searing emotive textures rubbing up against some of the crispest drums heard this year. "Solar Poise" is equally memorable, with strange ghostly vocals trapped deep in the mix and an unpredictable synth careening around the channels.

Review: After a quiet 2016 thus far Och's Autoreply label is finally back in action with a frankly fantastic selection of workouts from Mark Broom. In keeping with the style Broom has been exercising in new Perbec jams with Baby Ford, this is more restrained than the muscular techno Broom can also be known for. Instead, you get expressive, satisfying house tracks such as "18.2" and the neatly pumping "10" with its killer array of synths to satisfy the dancefloor and the mind in equal measure. Avoiding unnecessary fireworks in favour of perfectly chosen and shaped elements, this is a glittering demonstration of Broom's cool-headed approach in the studio.

  8. Mandibola (7:11)
Review: BSS stands for Bosconi Sound System: a trio comprised of Florentine label boss Fabio Della Torre, label staple Niccolo Daniel Rufo aka Rufus, plus Italian -American expat in Berlin: Mass Prod. The title reflects the contents of the album, as according to the label themselves: psychedelic/minimal techno and electro music, on a deep and dark tip that speaks to both the mind and the soul'. For the most part, it's an interesting departure from what many would usually associate with the label and its sub labels. While there's some great classic house tributes, like on the euphoric acid journey "Serotonin", channeling the best of the seminal Alleviated on the evocative "Eclipsed" or the acidic percolator-jack of "Black Out" - a respectful tribute to Relief Records' heyday in the early '90s. Then, there's some reduced techno reminiscent of early noughties m-nus, like on "Scaccomatto", while "No Flowers" channels the current in sounds of minimal-electro crossover: as heard on top labels of the moment like Cabaret and Time Passages.

Review: The young Dee Bufato steps up on the highly in-demand Sketches Records, out of Germany, with three effective slices of house-driven tech glory! This is pretty minimal gear in case you were wondering, and the opening "Ambedo" flutters its intricate groove in the same style as Villalobos and the rest of the Perlon massive; "Yomoc" stutters with a certain dubbiness that makes for some pretty dreamy textures. Finally, Fumiya Tanaka's remix of the latter tune injects an added layer of dance motion, namely some pretty killer kick-snares to add a bit more movement to the equation. Badness...

  2. Argy - "How Late It Was, How Late" (5:05)
  3. Markus Fix - "Baroon" (7:19)
  4. Jimi Jules - "Euphrasia" (8:15)
Review: This fine EP gathers together four previously unreleased exclusives from the latest edition of Cocoon's Dots & Pearls series, which was mixed by Markus Fix. His contribution to the EP, "Baroon" - a kind of contemporary re-imagining of the original 1988 version of The KLF's "What Time Is Love" with extra TB303 acid lines - is undoubtedly one of the highlights, alongside the ethereal melodies and early morning fuzz of Argy's intoxicating "How Late It Was, How Late". Elsewhere, Christian Burkhardt peppers a rolling house groove with boisterous but blissful stabs on "Karambolage", and Jimi Jules serves up a loose and languid take on the foreboding, stretched-out Innervisions tech-house sound ("Euphrasia").

  1. Your Love (feat Beckford)
  2. Your Love (Trus'me Your Love Takes Time remix)
  3. Your Love (Steve O'Sullivan remix)
Review: Active as a record releasing producer for a decade, James 'Burnski' Burnham has credits for a wide variety of labels in his discography, gracing everyone from Boe to Hot Creations. Constant Sound is a new label from the man, set up with Jon Woodall, Burnski's production partner as Constant. Music from Cab Drivers, Kris Wadsworth, A Scott, and Richard Rowell is promised over the coming months but it's a solo record from Burnski that kicks matters off with Your Love. A collaboration with vocalist Beckford, "Your Love" is one of those insistent, driving house cuts with dashes of acid to it and it's complemented by remixes from Prime Numbers man Trus'me and Mosaic boss Steve O'Sullivan who take the cut in markedly different directions. A solid start for Constant Sound!

  2. Cosmic Warfare (Diego Krause remix) (6:50)
  3. Another Source (original) (5:41)
  4. I Like You (Laura Jones remix) (5:59)
Review: Burnski's debut album DNA dropped on Constant Sound last year, and now the label have called upon a strong cast of characters to do the remix duty on some of the LP's key tracks. Parisian trio Mandar bring a heart-melting tone to "Another Source" without losing their insistent shuffle, while Diego Krause strips things down with a functional broth of minimal minded business. The original mix of "Another Source" gets a fresh outing, and very fine it sounds too. That leaves it to Laura Jones to twist out a hypnotic electro version of "I Like You".

  3. Vertigo (7:38)
  4. Daydreamer (7:02)
Review: Burnski's Constant Sound label keeps on trucking with this prime cut of crystalline tech-house for the more discerning heads. Lead track "Faith" is a feisty little groover, threading a wealth of field recordings and playful synth flourishes in between the fundamental rhythm section. "Get Up" has a freakier micro house bump to it that harks back to Burnski's Trapez days, while "Vertigo" does a marvelous job of spinning ones head right out with all manner of quivering synth tones. "Daydreamer" takes things a touch deeper to finish the record off with some crafty percussion, woozy melodic swells and immersive chord throbs in the lower register.
