  1. Rolling Shapes (8:52)
  2. Trainline (10:11)
Review: Romanian minimal-tech badboy, Silat Beksi, returns to the ever-impressive Pleasure Zone with pair of highly-crafted, ultra-sleek dance bangers that really put some style and panache into the whole scene. "Rolling Shapes", as the title implies, is a smooth and direct dancefloor bruiser that cruises at a steady tempo and yet still manages to pulsate its heavy bass with a distinctive style. On the B-side, "Trainline" gets even dubbier and more ethereal, retaining those swiping waves of bass, but adding in all sorts of quirky, off-the-cusp melodies for even more psychedelic fun. Class.

BELIEF 001 (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: BELIEF 001. Rel: 15 May 18
  1. Track 1 (9:33)
  2. Track 2 (8:51)
  3. Track 3 (8:40)
Review: The tech-house scene trend for "mysterious", vinyl-only EPs lacking artist or track credits shows no signs of dying down. This week's choice "unknown EP" apparently comes from Germany and is loosely titled "Belief", but that's literally all we know. The music contained within - particularly the snappy, bass-heavy, mind-altering hustle of the extended A-side track, where dreamy chords and a weighty analogue bassline slowly rise above a punchy machine groove - is actually pretty good. Elsewhere, we're also enjoying the chunky bounce of "Track 3", whose bubbly, bustling bassline comes accompanied by spacey riffs and intergalactic electronics.

Magical Av Inglesa 50 EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: SCRTC 002. Rel: 27 Feb 18
  1. Back 2 Deep (Audio Werner Back 2 House mix) (12:39)
  2. Magical Av 50 (7:53)
  3. Back 2 Deep (Vlad Radu remix) (6:57)
Review: Chilean imprint Secret Society stepped out in style last year with their debut release entitled Sheep: a various artists compilation which featured Vinyl Club boss Luc Ringeisen and Portuguese minimal hero Cleymoore. It is now over to Bendejo (Bende Panier) who is a Viennese producer that presents three deep and floaty tech house cuts on the reduced tip here. Featuring two absolutely lush versions of "Back 2 Deep" - the first by Berlin legend Audio Werner which was the one for us - this is the kind of dubby, loopy hypnotic bliss that you've come to expect from the man as heard on top labels like Cabinet, Toi Toi and his own Hartchef Discos. An honourable mention to Romanian Vlad Radu's rendition also, which was impressive in its own right and retaining the low-end driven vibe plus ethereal elements. On the flip, the bouncy, swing fuelled mini-funk of "Magical Av 50" will appeal to fans of SIT (who coincidentally appeared on the label's first release) or Thomas Melchior.

  4. A Lad Who's Sane (feat St. Bernard) (7:13)
Review: Spilt Milk return with their second release from Mr Spilt Milk himself Tred Benedict. Tred drops a tasty original track full of groove and energy, alot like the man himself. On remix duties, label favourite MarcAshken turns a wonderful interpretation and the awesome Mihai Popoviciu takes things up a notch with a classy techno work out. The final track is another original but this time in collaboration with label partner St. Bernard, with the pair dropping a rather murky minimal number with some choice words from one of their idols.

From Scratch EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SLPFNK 018. Rel: 29 May 18
  1. Out Of Line
  2. To GoodTo Be Who?
  3. Finest Hour
  4. Lagrange Point
Review: In a short space of time prodigious Dutch producer Pascal Benjamin has built up a catalogue of ear-snagging minimal house confections for labels like Welt, Norse Projekt, Algorhythmic and Botanic Minds. Now he's hitting the big time with this 12" on the mighty SlapFunk, and he's packing just the kind of chunky, swinging but ultimately lean jams they love. "Out Of Line" keeps things focused on the drums, with just some sub bass and microscopic threads of sonic matter in between. "To GoodTo Be Who?" is equally stripped down, but decidedly more wriggly in its make up, and then "Finest Hour" kicks off the B-side with some fatter beats and a more prominent bass line. "Lagrange Point" finishes the EP off with some subliminal bleeps and tones pinging in between the wafer thin percussive pulses.

  2. Cosmic Ray (Vincentiulian remix) (7:40)
  3. Kadoendra (7:29)
  4. Kadoendra (Giash remix) (7:21)
Review: Romanian duo Dubsons head up the Algorhythmic imprint and now serve up the label's third release, following up a great various artists EP that featured promising up and comers such as Rojid, Idana and RQZ. It's now over to young Dutch producer Pascal Benjamin, who has recently collaborated with local legend Daniel Sanchez for a great EP on Memoria, in addition to appearances on Little Helpers and Norse Projekt. On the A side, we have got the deep and lean hypnotism of "Cosmic Ray" in its original form, until Romanian wunderkind Vincentiulian works his magic on it for a superb remix. His version going for a much more rolling and funky vibe which will burn up the dancefloor. On the flip, "Kadoendra" with its abstract and cyclical minimalism will certainly garner Villalobos comparisons until the remix by Giash takes it down a couple of notches: for something deeper and slinkier suited to the afterhours.

  4. Kruf (6:11)
Review: Kase Kool main man out of Berlin Nick Beringer returns, inaugurating new imprint KK. Starting out in style with the kickin' deep groove of "Brija", he then serves up a nice remix of it by Lopaski; his version takes the track down a nice micro-house route that will appeal to fans of Lowris or Spacetravel. On the flip, there's the rather dubby and hypnotic "DTC" with an emphasis on moody elements and a strong bassline while "Kruf" closes the EP out just nicely on this rolling and groovy tech house journey.

Keep Up Appearances Remixes (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MDL 04. Rel: 18 May 15
  1. Seraphim (Frank & Tony Breakaway remix) (5:55)
  2. Worship (feat Qzen - Dana Ruh remix) (7:17)
  3. Feel Free (Dorisburg remix) (6:45)
  4. Worship (feat Qzen - Alan Doe remix) (6:34)
Review: Following the release of their debut LP, 'Keep Up Appearances' on their new label Modelmaker, Dan Berkson and James What draft in Frank & Tony, Dana Ruh, Dorisburg and Alan Doe for remixes.
Berkson & What have chalked up many releases on Poker Flat and Crosstown Rebels over the years whilst most recently turning heads outside of their own Modelmaker imprint via singles for Dogmatik and Seth Troxler's Play it Say It. The duo's LP, released in January, marked a new chapter in their production history and has seen support from Josh Wink, Mr G and Skream over the past few months.
'Keep Up Appearances - Remixes' opens with Anthony Collins and Francis Harris' superb Frank & Tony alias taking on 'Seraphim' which results in a tense but understated piece of layered, classic sounding house music while Dana Ruh, fresh from her excellent debut LP on Underground Quality last year, drops an eerie recreation of 'Worship' that draws on spacey synths and unsettling ambience.
Dorisburg, known for outstanding material on Sweden's Aniara amongst others, continues a sterling run of form with a rendition of 'Feel Free' which employs soaring chords to fashion a luscious and elevating take on the original. Rounding off the package is Berlin producer Alan Doe, an artist who debuted on Rue De Plaisance in 2014. Doe's 'Worship' remix is squarely dancefloor-aimed with punchy kicks, smokey effects and teasing keys.

Review: Modelmaker is a new London label from the collective minds of Dan Berkson and James What. The esteemed house duo has long been garnishing a range of international imprints with their inventive analogue house and techno sounds, but now they are focussing on their own outlet. Initially launching with a couple of self penned EPs, release number three will be the pair's long-time-in-the-making debut album, and after that a considered selection of other talents will join the ranks as the label pushes on. Always primarily focussed on machine made, texturally rich house and techno, each release will come with unique artwork based on works from What's great grandfather, Conrad Felixmuller, who was a well known German expressionist.

Spacejam (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: WRECKS 3. Rel: 07 Jul 14

  2. No I Didn't
  3. Oist Mal
Review: Klasse Wrecks welcomes Bristol-based Marco Bernardi to its ranks following strong releases for Clone, Delsin, Rawax, Planet E, and most recently the Kelly Twins' Happy Skull label. Spacejam provides an EP of demented drums, fiddling electronics and refreshing originality, showcasing the signature sound of the studio-obsessed Scottish born DJ and producer. His idiosyncratic style runs through the three tracks here, from the space jack and Green Velvet-inspired vocals of the title track, through the rubbery funk of "No I Didn't" and frenetic acid of "Oist Mal".

  1. Ias1000 (12:48)
  2. Topless Is More (6:27)
  3. Keep In Dutch (7:41)
Review: Romanian rising star Funk E has recently devoted his efforts to his own imprint Great White Circle, being the sole artist to present work on it thus far. Now he presents debut artist BhikkhuJuno Re who does not at all disappoint on these three rolling and hypnotic grooves which indicate that we may have another star from Bucharest on the rise. The A side is completely given to the nearly 13 minute long epic "Ias1000", the kind of subtle and ethereal groove that you could imagine the likes of Cristi Cons playing out on a hazy Saturday afternoon at Sunwaves. On the flip, "Topless Is More" is the perfect kind of tripped out and drugged up reductionism that's perfect for the afterhours and what the Romanians are true experts at. Finally "Keep In Dutch" goes for that Petre Inspirescu style crossover from avant-garde and classical with reliable dancefloor dynamics.

Visio (12")
Cat: PERLON 104. Rel: 18 Feb 15
  1. Visio
  2. Ruski
Review: After the adventures in Meditations from Thomas Melchior, Perlon's latest release of an impressive 2015 so far finds the label turn to a lesser known artist in Bihn. The production alias of Berlin based Germann Nguyen, BIHN emerged last year with a pair of low key 12"s as well as working with Onur Ozer as Treatment. What Nguyen lacks in profile he makes up for in punchy Perlon-worthy productions skills on the basis of his two tracks here with opener "Visio" a quite haunting cut where stripped back drum programming allows a neat bassline and detailed synth work to shine. Complementing this, it feels like "Ruski" is Nguyen letting his more urgent desires reign free and is likely to become a B side many selectors cherish.

Cat: TP 03. Rel: 06 Apr 16
  1. Dreifach (8:52)
  2. Yougo (5:42)
  3. Zweifach (5:59)
Review: When Bihn launched his Time Passages label back in late 2014, he was still something of a newcomer to the minimal scene but that changed last year thanks to some fine records for Cabaret and the mighty Perlon. There was the small matter of his Treatment album alongside Onur Ozer too! There is therefore a tangible sense of expectation behind this new Time Passages 12" from the Berlin artist and the three tracks on Dreifach will satisfy Binh fans. Indeed this 12" find Germann Nguyen embracing the needs of the dancefloor like never before, especially the two B-side productions. The title track is a more spectral affair, with a certain rusted charm to it.

  3. El Ancho Peuchelle (6:47)
  4. Chimichanga (6:29)
Review: Undercover Spanish collective Birdsmakingmachine specialise in quirky, all analogue, minimal house inspired by the seminal sounds of the legendary Perlon label, but with a fresh contemporary vibe much - like fellow crusaders of the cause like Half Baked (who they've previously released for), Discobar or Melliflow. For their ninth edition, the renowned live act presents another collection of fine afterhours inspired cuts: the wonky and grinding bumper "Americo", the dusty swing fuelled shuffle of "Chewies Groove" or the zappy and glitching 4/4 electro on "Chimichanga" which would make even the likes of Les Points or Binh stand up and notice. Probably the imprint's finest edition yet. Tip!

  1. Birdsmakingmachine - "F For Falsas"
  2. Deadbeat - "I don't need nothing if I got You"
  3. Louis Mc Guire - "Buffeting Tuft"
Review: From the label: When trends in music can come and go in the blink of an eye, ten years is a long time to stay relevant, passionate and real on the frontline. From its roots in the Parisian club scene by way of its spiritual home at Fuse in Brussels and so on to the globe-trotting, multi-faceted entity that it is today, Lessizmore is living proof of how to do a decade right. The fundamental heartbeat of this European house and techno institution is the maverick music that its affiliated artists make. Of course what the label sounds like now is not necessarily what the label sounded like back in 2006, but it's telling that some of the original characters are still with the label to this day, while many are long time members of the LIZM family that have joined the ranks over the years. In piecing together this compilation, the idea from label founders Jessica Bossuyt and Pierre Noisiez was simply to represent where their brainchild is at right now, from guests at their events in the early days to more recent collaborators of all kinds. Kicking off the first EP, the finest slithers of percussion and whispers of icy soul weave their way into the sublime, sprawling concoction that Birdsmakingmachine delivers, shifting drum sounds across eleven minutes of delicate yet irresistible groove. Meanwhile on the B-side long time champion of future-minded dub techno Deadbeat creates something of an anthem for the label, turning out an energised workout laden with psychedelic swirls of delay and embellished with a catchy vocoder hook. Recent Lessizmore signing Louis McGuire delves into his lowslung MPC-powered bag of tricks and drops another crucial slab of swinging funk that finds the up and coming artist turning to a moodier sound palette customized for the deepest corners of the night.

Review: More dub laden tech house from the always impressive Laate camp out of France, following up great releases by the legendary Jerome Pacman, Montpellier duo Yamen & Eda and newcomer Jack Keo. This time they've handed the reins over to The Black Tone - his last release for the label was the its sophomore release back in 2016 entitled Circadian Attraction. Real name Benoit D, he serves up a bunch of smooth grooves here, like the spacey tech-funk of "Time Out Of Joint" reminiscent of early '00s UK tech house and the ultra deep "Poetic Idea" which receives a right bumpin' remix by Michael James (Zoo Project / Constant Sound) on the flip. The moody and glacial "Afternoon Delight" was our favourite of the bunch - this hypnotic roller closes out this fine EP in style. Tip!

Review: Blancmange were a British synth-pop outfit which surfaced out of the late 1970's and thanks to the power of Record Store Day, the infamous Cherry Red imprint has put out their "I Want More" single from their last Semi Detached LP accompanied by a fine remix, indeed! The original is a robotic, interstellar disco tune with one hell of a vocal loop: a ringing, pulsating chant which'll get you singing in no time. London's bass wizard Applebottom is called up for the remix duties and his own version is a militant tech-house rework with a bubbling bassline and some pretty killer percussion work!
