Review: What a year this has been for Varhat. Since making his debut on a split EP at the end of 2015, he's released a string of 12" singles that skillfully shuffle between tech-house, deep-house, and more minimalist flavours. Here he inaugurates Yoyaku's new YoY imprint with a solid four-track missive. He begins with the electro-tinged alien funk of "Sugari.A1", before tipping a wink to the bass-heavy bounce of two-step garage on the spacey deep house cut "Sugari.A2". On the B-side, "Sugari.B1" sees the producer pay tribute to the classic tech-house era (think early to mid 2000s), via metallic electronics, bouncy rhythms, and breakbeat style drum fills, before drawing proceedings to a close with the starry, Motor City influenced "Sugari.B2".

Cat: SILVER 039. Rel: 02 Mar 15
  1. Trem (original mix)
  2. Trem (Chris Carrier remix)
  3. Trem (Elbee Bad remix)
Review: Equally dabbling into DJing/live act or sound art installations (for renowned institutions in Paris and Rome, among others), Ben is also building up a definite career in production that first took off with an EP on Minibar and a remix of Carl Craig's classic Bug In The Bassbin on Planet E. Immersed in contemporary classical music, jazz, techno and various house subgenres, he claims a diversity that's been showcased in all its subsequent interventions on labels such as Eklo or Balance with a collaboration with the legendary Chez Damier. With his music mate Leiris, he will be launching soon a vinyl label called Reduce Records, in order to release their finest music pieces.
The track "Trem" for Silver Network reflects the diversity of his influences, surely a dancefloor-oriented bomb track ! On the remix tip, it's useless to present legendary artist from New York City Elbee Bad and Paris based Chris Carrier ...

  1. Horizons (5:36)

  3. Chymere (14:29)
Review: From Body Parts and Sleep Is Commercial through to Suruba and Uzvar, Ludovic Vendi has proven himself to be a leading light in the experimental corners of the minimal techno scene. He steps up to London label Hoxton with a diverse three-tracker that takes in atmospheric downtempo sound design on "Horizons" before heading into more propulsive broken beat territory on "Lost In Sequences". On the B side "Chymere" strikes a more familiar shuffling 4/4 note as it winds through all manner of tripped out sound effects, providing the most dancefloor friendly jam on the record.

Smoke Enjoyable (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: DRUMMA 017. Rel: 18 Dec 17
  1. Smoke Enjoyable (Jazzy) (10:46)
  2. Smoke Enjoyable (dub) (7:23)
  3. Smoke Enjoyable (Alejandro Vivanco remix) (8:05)
Review: Felipe Venegas has cemented his reputation as one of Chile's finest DJs and producers. He teams up with fellow countryman Jose Luis Ordenes aka Umho for some trippy microhouse grooves that are perfectly suited to the afterhours here for his own esteemed Drumma imprint. The imprint searches for a new platform for electronic music, based on clear rhythmic intention, organic expression and with a club orientation. Starting off with the deep and smooth "Smoke Enjoyable" (Jazzy) which will no doubt appeal to the quirky tongue-in-cheek grooves out of Paris made popular by the likes of Cabanne, Lowris or Ark. "Smoke Enjoyable" (dub) injects far more dancefloor dynamic into proceedings with impressive results - this rolling and hypnotic groove reminds us of the work of Romania's Cristi Cons or SIT. Finally, homeboy Alejandro Vivanco hands in a sleek remix which takes it back into reduced afterhours territory and focusing on those entrancing rhythms and hallucinatory sound design for added drama.

  1. Ubersprung (Mano Le Tough mix)
  2. Ubersprung (Marcus Worgull edit)
  3. Majestat (DJ Tennis edit)
Review: Vermont's self-titled LP from 2014 was one of Kompakt's most successful releases over the last couple of years, and the German imprint has decided to continue its remix re-rub after Prins Thomas' wet and wild excursion. This time, we have another three winners dishing out the reinterpretations: both Mano Le Tough and Marcus Worgull have a go at "Ubersprung", the former going for an ultra-slick, deep space vibe while the latter lives up to the Kompakt sound with his minimalistic yet beautifully melodic version. Last but not least, DJ Tennis remixes "Majestat" into an airy, outsider house joint for the more introspective sets. Quality, as per usual.

Review: Verrina & Ventura are two very busy guys. The duo are partially or fully responsible for esteemed imprints such as All Inn Records, Only 300 and HOWL and now deliver a brilliant offering on Russia's Nervmusik entitled Le Notti Di Cabiria. Starting out with the rolling and dusty deep house of "Circo" which then gets a remix by French legend Ark (which is absolutely intense), they then get into some weird-ass minimal grooves too. Such as on the early Perlon sounding "Esistenza Umana" or "Passeggiata Archeologica" which get bugged out in wickedly reductionist after hours style. "Cabiria" delves into lo-tech soul territory in a similar way that guys like TC 80 and Evan Baggs have also been doing recently.

Review: Sheffield's man of many aliases Tommy Vicari Jnr unleashes his debut LP as V.I.C.A.R.I on new Aussie vinyl-only imprint established by Mantra Collective's Jack Fuller. If you've followed Tommy for more than a minute you'll know what's in store here: lucid machine funk that bumps, grinds and spaces the dickens out of you. Key highlights include the molten warped bass on "Moy Lally In D", the juddering clipped funk of "Various Small Flames" and the Detroitian soul hurricane that is "Youereve" but these are just three of the twelve stunning synthetic spells he's cast right here. Essential.

  1. Always Be Here (9:10)
  2. Rudow (6:18)
  3. Ramshackles (5:54)
  4. Unoutcome (7:04)
Review: Tommy Vicari Jr, also known as either Tomski or Vibration White Finger depending on which sounds you gravitate towards, has put out a staggering amount of EPs since the mid 00s, and an even more absurd volume of tunes in the last three years alone. The house specialist has been called up to revitalise the Hyperspace brand, and this effective four-tracker is built with exactly the right sort of mineral for it. "Always Be Here" bounces lazily amid a wonderful sea of rattling percussion and muddy bass bumps, while "Rudow" is a much sleeker, more intricate house gem backed by a wall of sub-bass. The flipside starts off with "Ramshackles" and its stripped-back, minimalistic approach that leaves room just for the low ends to dissipate, whereas "Unooutcome" drops a classic Chicago sort of vibe that recalls the sort of basslines Lil Louis would bang out on a regular.

Review: Sheffield's Tommy Vicari Jr has been releasing since around 2004, but in the last couple of years has really hit his stride. Just this year in fact he's already has nine releases and it's only June for goodness sake! Despite his significant output he's still pursuing quality, rest assured, as the NWL004 EP certainly proves. Starting out with the deep, sexy and slinky groove of "BCWUAF" which sounds like late nineties Parisian deep house by D'Julz or Jerome Pacman, he's then into some fierce and stomping techno with "MORPT", a cyclical and functional DJ tool for serious and up for it dancefloors: don't forget that this guy has collaborated with the likes of Myles Serge! Finally on the flip is "Petardex" a tough and trippy techno excursion whose hypnotic and experimental nature just begs your attention, calling to mind comparisons to recent Steve Bicknell or Acronym.

  3. ADMNTI - "Clima" (7:08)
  4. Shai Spooner & Jordan Dessar - "Vibrations" (6:46)
Review: London's 4Plae Records is quickly making a little name for itself amid the leviathan that is the minimal/tech-house game. It was always a difficult sub-scene to stand out in, and this is only getting harder as the lines between physical and digital releasees are blurred more and more. The imprint comes through with a various artists collab, featuring five up and coming producers who all have their names out there already. On the A-side, both Alessio Viggiano and Rigzz & Saenz drop some ultra-sleek, ultra-effective tech-house burners with similarly swinging percussion folds. Banging. For the B-side, ADMNTI's "Clima" turns that percussion into jazzed-out delight, adding in a series of funky vocal chops from God knows where, while Shai Spooner and Jordan Dessar's "Vibrations" strip pretty much everything away apart from the percussion, a militant, head-first bounce of drums.

  1. Precox
  2. Two Kids Set Off
Review: The final vinyl volume of tracks from Ricardo's Dependent & Happy LP arrives and like the previous three releases, demand will surely outstrip supply. Adhering to the adage "let's save the best till last" Perlon cull our favourite two tracks from the album here in "Precox" and "Two Kids Set Off", the former's bassline takes on a cat purring quality as Villalobos locks into a stripped back groove that seems to dip into infinity before taking a pleasant deviation towards mid point obscurity. On the flip, the taut double bass strings and strange televisual sampling present the Chilean at his most willfully adventurous. Already prey to the Discogs vultures - don't sleep on these!

Review: Ricardo Villalobos's first missive of 2017 is a typically epic one. It sees him join forces with Pressure Trax founder Einzelkind for a double-pack's worth of trippy variations on a theme. All four tracks offer an excellent fusion of both producer's styles, with the Chilean's darting bass and intricate percussion programming providing a perfect foil for the German's odd samples, brain-melting electronics and forthright hypnotism. Each successive track is subtly different from the last, with the pair switching lead lines, sampled textures, and beat patterns. Throughout, you'll want to both dance and immerse yourself in their spaced-out sound. In other words, it's an excellent EP.

Review: Eddy and Levii, two Romanian electronic producers by the name of Vinyl Speed Adjust, have gained fame thanks to the myriad of EPs that they've released for labels like Visionquest, and the Bucharest duo are set to light the Hourglass LTD imprint on fire with this latest EP. Contrast EP Vol.1 kicks off with "Floating Around", a punchy techno slammer with a polished edge and countless minimalistic bleeps spewing from its groove, and the Volkan Akin remix breaks up its tempo beautifully, managing to retain the core of the original but filtering its bass and percussion through mounds of cacophonous bass that is built for the big rooms. Tight minimal gear.

Review: Looking to build on the momentum of their debut release, fledgling Italian label Inwave swiftly return with a second offering that retains the split artist focus but draws from a different selection of producers. Given the high standards of the Romanian minimal scene, it's little surprise to find Inwave making inroads there with Bucharest pair Vinyl Speed Adjust calling shotgun with the deep percussive grooves of "Railway". The unheralded ZPH show off their skill at fluid programming on "Breaks Of Mediate" which is reminiscent of early DJ Food in some respects, whilst another Romanian duo Dubson indulge their abstract side with the excellent "Pripote". To close proceedings Inwave look closer to home with "Otherside" from Messina-based Vincenzo Monastra the kind of production you'd find wedged on a Perlon B Side.
