  1. Playdem (7:13)
  2. Shimmering (vinyl Only) (7:55)
Review: With such a heavyweight trio of tech-house talents involved, you'd expect this surprise studio hook-up between Enzo Siragusa, Archie Hamilton and Subb-An to be rather good. Predictably, both tracks hit the spot. A-side "Playdem" hits all the right notes, with the experienced threesome wrapping creepy chords, jaunty piano motifs and carefully chosen spoken word snippets around a fireside-warm bassline and snappy, handclap-heavy machine drums. The fun continues on flipside "Shimmering", a ludicrously loose and bass-heavy roller blessed with deep and trippy electronics and just the right of late night funk. Really, though, it's the weightiness of the sub-bass that hits home hardest.

Foreal EP (12")
Cat: FUSE 031. Rel: 28 Mar 18
  1. Foreal (8:51)
  2. Foreal (Djebali remix) (7:16)
  3. Foreal (Seb Zito remix) (7:08)
Review: Enzo Siragusa is no stranger to studio collaborations, having previously worked on EPs alongside Alexkid, Archie Hamilton, Seb Zito and Subb-An. His latest temporary studio partner is Nima Gorji, a Danish producer with two decades of releases under his belt already. In its original form, "Foreal" is something of a dreamy, mind-altering treat, with backwards vocal snippets, deep space electronics and drowsy, elongated pads rising above a crunchy, club-ready tech-house groove. Parisian deep house producer Djebali opts for a more paranoid vibe on his remix, which feels altogether dirtier and more driving than the A-side despite judicious use of the duo's pads and vocal snippets. To complete a tasty package, Seb Zito serves up a heavier, percussion-rich interpretation full of mind-altering acid tweaks and dubby sub-bass.

  1. Shades Of Riddim (7:10)
  2. Lil Ley (5:54)
  3. Blue Notes (7:16)
Review: Rawax turn their attention to Fuse London head honcho Enzo Siragusa and his right hand man Seb Zito for some finely tuned minimal tech house on offer here. On the A side we have got "Shades Of Riddim" which is the usual rolling, swing fuelled and hypnotic business you can expect from the pair and is highly reliable dancefloor fodder. On the flip "Lil Ley" adds more power into the groove plus those cheery and hypnotic keys add a nice touch: this is in the same vein as iO Mulen or Zendid. Finally things take a deeper turn on "Blue Notes" but there are still some emotive, futuristic and bumpy elements present, as much as the previous tracks.

  1. Swung (7:16)
  2. Mario X (6:10)
  3. Stellaris (7:17)
  4. Leepstic (8:36)
Review: Following up great releases by Thomas Stieler and Liou, London by way of Peru's Blind Vision present a collaboration between two of the scene's finest new talents. French-Singaporean duo Dixia Sirong have delivered a couple of great EP's on Chez Damier's Inner Strength Music and they team up here with rising Dutch DJ Le Louche - who delivered a terrific track "Crosswind" on Daydream 03. The Sunday Connection EP features the fittingly titled "Swung" which features some wonderfully skippy drums by Le Louche beneath Dixia Sirong's dubbed-out sound design. The bass-driven bounce of "Stellaris" is powered by moody and glacial aesthetics and "Leepstic" is a slinky and atmospheric tech house journey that's perfect mood lighting for the warm up.

  1. Nopkin (6:02)
  2. Coolood (6:03)
  3. Thike (4:57)
  4. Nopkin (Edward remix) (8:47)
Review: Knarf Skipson has been MIA since 2014 but, then again, he isn't one to put out new music on a constant basis. The dude began his journey into house and techno with a string of EPs for the Quintessentials label, before jumping onto Raum...Musik, and then a whole heap of burgeoning labels such as the present DreamAwake imprint. "Nopkin" gets straight to the point thanks to a bouncy, dub-heavy house cut that sounds like a cross between Mood II Swing and the minimal techno coming out of Romania, with the same going for the comparatively moodier flex of "Coolood". On the flip, "Thike" enters the lounge with its more laid-back, jazzy kind of style, but it's Edward's remix of "Nopkin" that gets all the attention; the Giegling regular morphs the original cut into a beautiful little minimal gem with a rough, analogue sort of swagger.

  1. Group V (7:51)
  2. Despot (6:00)
Review: Hot on the heels of his inaugural release in January, Braiden introduces Slewis, a new producer on his emerging Off Out label. After years of honing his craft in the studio and playing in experimental bands, London born Slewis makes his mark on his debut with two equally bold dancefloor cuts. Group V opens with an extended twisting cacophony of synthesizers before breaking down into metallic driving machine funk. On the flip, Despot delves deeper down the rabbit hole as EBM influenced sounds and syncopated claps dance around a bed of paranoia, leading to a tense breakdown populated by a flurry of spasmodic drums.

  4. Message 045 (3:32)
Review: Simbad Stanislas has enjoyed a fine start to 2017, with copies of his first outing on Funkineven's Apron label simply flying off the shelves. Here he transfers to Lo Recordings to deliver another collection of eccentric, off-kilter, hard-to-pin-down dancefloor treats. Stanislas' stock-in-trade is combining dusty, MPC-powered house rhythms with quirky, left-of-centre sounds. This fusion can be heard loud and clear on "Ping Pong Love", where a soulful vocal sample is combining with weirdo electronics and thrusting analogue noises, and amongst the intergalactic synths, bubbly electronics and bizarre spoken word samples of ambient closer "Message 045". There's a slightly breezier, break-of-dawn feel to the overwhelmingly loved-up World Air Hybird Remix of "Ping Pong Love", while "Backstreet" is a jolly, jammed-out chunk of loose-limbed deep house positivity.

  1. A Message For The DJ (5:33)
  2. Inception Dub (7:48)
  3. A Message For The DJ (Jimpster Red Light remix) (7:27)
Review: Delano Smith's "A Message For The DJ" was first released in a distant 2005 haze, but the EP has remained a classic ever since. That's because it's a prime example of the combined powers of old-school Detroit techno and more contemporary waves of European deep house; Smith is a master of this artform, and this particular release, out on Detroit's own Still Music, has the ability to please all sorts of listeners and club-dwellers. The lead tune is full-bodied groove, taking inspiration from the US' heritage, but taking the percussion that one bit closer to what many would term 'minimal'. "Inception Dub" is just as classy and laid-back, a dreamy house assemblage with seductive jazzy nuances, leaving main man Jimpster to remix "A Message For The DJ" into a more driving, more charging tech-house monster that is perhaps the pinnacle of the entire subgenre. A piece of contemporary dance music history, right here...

Review: In a curious twist on the usual reissue fare, Chiwax have laid their hands on Sneaky Tim's classic 1994 Dance Mania release and given the A-side over to Ricardo Villalobos and Heiko Schafer to drop a remix of "Mental Kombat" with all the minimal quirkiness that you would expect from the pair. Meanwhile on the flipside the original version of "Planet Wall" sounds as flawless as ever, marching forth with its wistful chord hook and sax lick putting a necessary ruffness into sublime deep house. "Ever Body" turns the heat up with its garage bump and nagging vocal chant, primed to set off any peak time situation.

  4. Sky Ride (5:46)
Review: Following up a great inaugural release by Portland's AC$, mysterious new imprint Open Channel for Dreamers (or simply O.C.D.) presents Montreal based Adam Solomon with four retro flavoured techno cuts, which take their cues from early sounds of Sheffield and Detroit. Starting off with the funky minimal techno-soul of "B 50" reminiscent of Titonton Duvante and the deep space transmission of "40.000 Light Years Away". On the flip, "Track For J" shares the same penchant for retro techno in the vein of recent releases on Berlin imprints Libertine and Slow Life, but the best was certainly saved for last on the hypnotic journey of "Sky Ride" with its evocative bounce that's led by those sweet arpeggiated pads.

Review: Freaks man Luke Solomon was still in the early stages of his career when he donned the Jean Caffeine alias and released Downtime, Turn Around & Go Backwards. Here, the 1998 EP is given the re-release treatment on reissue imprint Mint Condition. It remains one of Solomon's deeper and more considered collections of tracks. The title track, here featured in freshly re-mastered form, is a tech-tinged deep house treat, with rich chords and tumbling melody lines stretching out across a smooth, bass-heavy groove. "Jean's Train of Thought" peppers a swinging, Chicago-influenced groove with punchy synth horns and Sheffield style bleep melodies, while "Jean's Afterthought" is a deep and dreamy shuffler.

Review: South London Ordnance's killer run of form continues with this release for Danish imprint TEAL. "Witch Hunt" sees him develop his canny mix of 4/4 house and swung garage dynamics, this time bringing in the mood of 90s jungle to his slow-house formula, with its churning subs and vocal skip with narcoleptic peak time stabs. The lumbering density of "Chase Song" meanwhile combines the deeper techno atmospherics of Skudge with a maelstrom of snares and rave dynamics.

Review: Luca Cara's Spacetravel project continues to grow in style and panache, almost surpassing his early LP for Germany's legendary Perlon imprint. The Italian producer is back on Vera & Alexandra's Melliflow label, out of Germany, landing on our shelves with his second studio LP to date, the wonderful Ziusudra. Right from the get-go, it's clear that Cara's ideas are clear, and that his vision of dance music is shaped by the outer fringes of space, often crafting tunes that sound as if they were borne out of alien spaceships. Nonetheless, the best part of these tracks are still shaped by a strong sense for the dancefloor, swaying their beats to the bounce of fat basslines, metallic analogue beats, and a strange sort of tropical futurism. Minimal gear at its best.

Review: Under the now familiar Spacetravel alias, Luca Cara has released some fine music over the last couple of years, most notably a fine debut album for Perlon. Here he pops up on Japan's Cabaret imprint with a four-track EP that largely looks to Detroit for inspiration. The sci-fi inspired futurism of the Motor City can be clearly heard in the darting synth lines, fizzing cymbal programming and undulating bass of opener "Axion", before "Change Planet Stacion" adds a little acid-fuelled Chicago jack to the late '80s Transmat template. "Spirit" is darker and creepier in tone, while "Ankor What" successfully fixes vintage techno percussion and synths to a rich, deep house style bassline and chords.
