Ad Astra (12")
Cat: INKAL 003. Rel: 20 Dec 17
  1. Ad Astra (8:08)
  2. Do Your Thing (7:47)
Review: With German and Ghanaian DNA, Ben Rau is blessed with the best of both cultures - and the combination of influences from his forefathers permeates into his music. Infectious rhythmic grooves and emotive melodies mix together to form a rich, deep and hypnotic formula that speaks to your very soul. A native Beriner, he moved to the UK several years back to study and upon immersing himself in the London scene, hooked up with Enzo Siragusa and the FUSE crew - with whom he is still a resident to this day. Since striking out on his own with the Inkal imprint as an outlet for his own productions, he serves up his best yet on its third edition. The slinky and reduced minimal house of "Ad Astra" is perfect for the afterhours and had us reminiscing on the mid noughties glory days, when labels like Minus and Trapez reigned supreme. On the flip, he gets more upfront and energetic on the funky "Do Your Thing" featuring catchy vocal hooks, hypnotic polyrhythms and rolling bass.

The hypnotic and futurist bounce of "Systeme Solaire" and "Expand" respectively will blend in with the current best of British tech house such as OdD or Jack Wickham with its and rolling swing-fuelled aesthetic.

  3. Grotesque Studiado (7:42)
  4. Trexroar (9:03)
Review: Amin Ravelle returns with his fifth outing to date, another highly calibrated minimal techno experiment that takes inspiration from both the German and Romanian traditions. Much like the likes of the Slow Life imprint, these tunes are effective bullets to deploy through the sound system, wherever you may be. "Intrus Detectat" is a cold, calculating glitch of beats and precision-cut bass forms, and "Pan Integrista" steps a few places further out into the ether thanks to moodier, more cavernous set of background sonics. "Grotesque Studiado" is eerie in all the right ways, blasting out more complex sound patters, leaving "Trexroar" to lift the lid and unleash the deadliest of beat patterns. More Sobriquet, please.

Review: Chez Damier's Courtesy Of Balance sublabel continues to mark itself out as a hotbed for high quality house music with this 12", welcoming the first release from RAWMoments, a collaboration between Lessi S, Paolo Rocco and Pijynman. The first 12" is handed over to different mixes of "What A Night", with the original taking on a swirling, moody tone before the more forthright strue of "What A Day". The second disc features the tracky "Do You", the lightly skipping "Numbers" and the spaced out ambient drum & bass excursion "LHR", rounding out the 90s undercurrent that makes this record so instantly appealing.

  3. Cosmogone (6:27)
  4. Cosmogone (Verrina & Ventura remix) (7:01)
Review: Parisian Reda Dare is closely affiliated with local hero Djebali, Phil Weeks and Mancini - so you get an idea of where he's coming from. Fresh off launching his eponymous imprint, he launches his next one at us from Mexican imprint Parliamnt entitled "Cosmogone". In its original form it is a bumpin', minimalistic and swing-fuelled tool, that's aimed squarely at afterhours dancefloors. It gets a bunch of wicked remixes too: Berlin tech-house hero Diego Krause (Beste Modus) delivers two remixes. The first is a funky/hi-tech affair that will appeal to fans of iO (Mulen) or Jack Wickham, while the second gets stripped back, dubbed-out and moody - much in the vein of local heroes Daniel Paul & DJ Modesty. Our favourite of the bunch was the rendition on the flip by HOWL head honchos Verrina & Ventura, their trippy perspective reaches near tribal moments with its infectious groove.

  1. Remind Me (6:19)
  2. The Last Tango (8:29)
  3. The Last Tango (Ernesto Ferreyra remix) (12:08)
Review: Ema Remedi's story is, up to this point, quite a mystery to us here at HQ. Firstly, she's only released a handful of tunes up to this point - out through a collaborative comp which surfaced back in 2013 - and her debut label, Piros, also makes its first appearance on the dance scene. Both entities launch with "Remind Me", a compelling and almost meditative minimal sketch boosted by a lovely balearic swing; "The Last Tango" heads even further down the dub path thanks to a hazy procession of liquid-like atmospherics, and Ernesto Ferreyra's remix of it gives the track a whole new type of tech-swing.

Modulation EP 01 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MODU 001 . Rel: 30 Jan 17
  1. Junction Chaos - "Moonraker"
  2. Rider
  3. Vapour
  4. Space
Review: While Lee Renacre may not be instantly familiar to tech house heads these days, the man has been heavily involved since the early 90s. Now back with a new impetus to engage with the contemporary scene and show the kids how its done, Renacre has launched Modugroove as a vehicle for his more recent modular-minded jams. Most of these fly under the banner of 100Hz, which Renacre has been recording as for a long time, but the opening track on Modulation EP 01 sees the emergence of a new collaborative project, Junction Chaos. Whatever the source, these tracks ooze class and sophistication, using deft sound design and subtle grooves to produce head turning club tracks.

  3. Shuzzbuzz (Robin Ball House mix) (6:16)
  4. Booma (original re-master) (5:05)
Review: As swathes of DJs and dancers get ever more into classic and niche electro from the 90s, Groovepressure has reformed to bring back some of its highly sought-after releases and keep the Discogs sharks at bay. With a fresh re-master and some new mixes to boot, the label makes a wise choice for its third reissue by picking up the record they first put out, Resonators' "Shuzzbuzz". The original mix and its B side "Booma" sound better than ever with a bit of modern spit 'n' polish, but then Robin Ball's electro and house versions of "Shuzzbuzz" push the classic into exciting new realms without losing that all-important old-skool flavour.

Crasher (12")
Cat: KOMPAKT 385. Rel: 25 Apr 18
  1. Crasher (7:53)
  2. Hold It/Control It (6:48)
Review: In the two years that have passed since his last EP on Kompakt, Jake Williams (that's Rex The Dog to you and me) has spent much of his time releasing his "secret weapon" edits as digital-only singles. Perhaps he intended them to be his swansong to the nu-disco scene, because both tracks here are far more driving and intoxicating than many of his previous releases. "Crasher" is a throbbing chunk of peak-time Euro-techno underpinned by a pulsating arpeggio bassline, echo-laden computer bleeps and waves of undulating electronics. Flipside "Hold It/Control It" sounds like an EBM lover's take on Paul Woolford classic "Erotic Discourse", albeit with the addition of some catchy cut-up vocal samples.

Haxo EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MRKSF 004. Rel: 03 Jul 17
  1. ESO 350-40
  2. Terminal Sud
  3. Haxo Station
  4. Batiment Cour
Review: Solal Reyes is another talented French producer to add to the list of house heads to watch in 2017. Joining up with the equally promising Mr KS, Reyes presents a debut EP that will only be available to those willing to buy the wax, and hot damn is it worth it. Lead track "ESO 350-40" is a loose and limber funker of a house jam with all kinds of playful, but utterly cool elements at play. The same could be said of "Terminal Sud" where the rubbery bass and snappy shuffle will get bodies popping from the front to the back of the room. "Haxo Station" has a slightly edgier lilt to its bounce, and then "Batiment Cour" drops the swing for a straight up strut through razor sharp tech house on what is a stunning first release for Reyes.

  4. Ianoda (6:33)
Review: Metropolita recordings is a label based in London, founded as an outlet for the recordings of Riccardo Buccirossi - who also happens to run the Imprints label that has released work by legends such as 100Hz and Ivan Iacobucci. Riccardo himself clearly has a penchant for the old-school sounds of classic techno and electro, as heard on the All Things Are One EP. "Urania" features a nice contrast between the clang and clatter of analogue drum computers and sampled latin polyrhythms - all sandwiched between the blips and bleeps. Additionally on the flip, you can hop aboard the acid express for the tripped out "Eroma" or be hypnotised by some mad Juno 106 action on the wacky "Ianoda".

Review: The FUSE London crew are back everyone, look out! Bringing the sound of their legendary daytime raves to us again and getting straight down to business on Enzo Siragusa's third edition of 5 are label mainstays Rich NxT (with the rolling and adrenalised "Badass") and the always impressive OdD aka Damian Daley & Danny Dixon joined by newcomer Rossko (making his production debut) on the rolling hypnotism of "Jabba The Hut". On the flip is Moscow Records boss Archie Hamilton (another mainstay of the label) with the woozy and tripped out after hours deepness of "Cirrus" and the Deep End Soundsystem affiliated Sam Bellis with the gutsy acid driven "Solstrole".

  1. ANTR (7:18)

  3. Hotwing (5:54)
  4. Nascar Nights (6:38)
Review: Gentlemen, start your engines! With the floodlights on full blast, Frankfurt's Sturo label has invited us to enjoy some Nascar Nites in the company of young German hotshots Tom Ries and Tiago Walter. They press pedal to the metal and screech off the start line through "ANTR", a mind-altering tech-house bumper built around fizzing machine drums, wayward acid lines and spacey synthesizer motifs, before careering off down the long straight via the starry, bassline driven box jam "Pacific Export". The talented twosome consolidates their lead through EP highlight "Hotwing", a deliciously rubbery peak-time workout blessed with a fretless bass style riff. Ries and Walter fittingly take the checkered flag via title track "Nascar Nights", a delicious fuision of skittish electro rhythms and sumptuous deep house warmth.

Cat: WPTMWL 01. Rel: 22 Aug 16
  1. Walking Dad
  2. Last Horizont (feat Sinderesi)
  3. Walking Dad (S.A.M. Reshape)
Review: We Play The Music We Love is an Italian and Uk based party that after 7 years of activity has decided to start with its own vinyl only label. The first release comes from one of the founders and resident DJ of the collective: RILLS. He clearly stamping his mark on the label with two solid tracks to launch things with some claut.

The two original tracks, one featuring Sinderesi, explore some dubby house territory with mesmerising chords that will be appreciated on any demanding dancefloor.

The additional remix is from the producer of the moment: Samuel Andre Madsen a.k.a. S.A.M. (Oscillat, Delaphine, Mandar, Fathers and Sons).
