  1. Monster (Robert Babicz variation)
  2. Monster (Alex Bau remix)
  3. Monster (original mix)
Review: A small, tiny 10" discovered in the universe of electronic music back in 1995 turned the definition of the world-famous and very techno purist Harthouse label upside down: "Monster" was and still is different to techno, different to electro and different to pop. At the same time it's all of this. Nowadays maybe even more contemporary mind food than 10 years before, this track creeps around the dancefloor straight into your ear and doesn't even think about leaving. A real masterpiece, some might hate it, but most love it for sure, this song will delight people all around the world in clubs of all kinds. In addition Robert Babicz aka Rob Acid aka Sontec and Alex Bau take care of pushing the theme even more towards the future with two slammin' remixes. So here we go again with a real jewel of electronic music.

  1. Amber Light Of Etheral Shadow (6:31)
  2. Easy Waves (6:35)
  3. Move (8:15)
  4. Momentary (5:59)
Review: Artyom Ziobin's distinctive style of minimal house stands apart from the usual thoroughfare of moody, dubby shufflers. Instead the Russian producer reaches for a warm, disco-influenced sound palette which he then slices and dices into sleek, crafty party workouts with lashings of panache as well as studio ingenuity. Following appearances on Bump Foot and Grow Vinyl, the latest outing for Plantae comes via Elephant Moon, with lead track "Amber Light Of Ethereal Shadow" cutting a dashing figure across the soundscape with its busy but nimble mixture of synth splashes and stuttering drums.

  2. Translated Translations Translated (5:15)
  3. River Electric (5:15)
  4. Most Unusual (Inner State) (7:27)
  5. No Language (7:16)
Review: The Thule vaults open up once more to give us further insight into the foundations of one of the great bastions of Icelandic deep house and techno. Plastic is an early alias of Yagya, who was on searing form when he originally made the River Electric 12" back in 1999. A metallic finish gives "Brain Plasticity" it's unique appeal, while "Translated Translations Translated" heads into dubbier territory (albeit with some cheeky bitcrushing thrown in for good measure). Whichever cut you plump for, Thule have dusted down yet another gem of unique Scandinavian techno you won't want to be without.

EX: Club Mixes (double 12")
Cat: 12MUTE 530. Rel: 25 Mar 15
  1. EXhale (Dixon Just A Different Mixdown version) (6:56)
  2. EXplore (Recondite remix) (5:56)
  3. EXpand (Tale Of Us remix) (7:47)
  4. EXposed (Dubfire remix) (13:03)
Review: Four tracks from last year's Plastikman album get the remix treatment with some unlikely results. Innervisions boss Dixon would not be the most obvious candidate to rework Hawtin, but his "just a different mix down version" of "Exhale" sees the German DJ deliver a rolling, acid-fried workout that veers into oceanic chords. Newcomers Recondite and Tale of Us have remixed "Explore" and Expand" respectively. The former's version is dreamy and introverted, while the latter's remix focuses on repetitive, tingling piano lines. Most surprisingly however is Dubfire's version of "Exposed". Instead of big room minimal, the former Deep Dish member drops a hypnotic, pulsing techno workout, led by spiralling acid lines and warbling low end tones.

Modulation Tropique EP (12" repress)
Cat: INFUSE 026. Rel: 11 Jul 18
  1. Push It (6:41)
  2. Modulation Tropique (6:58)
  3. Locoliente (7:42)
Review: Serial collaborator Romain "Traumer" Reynaud is at it again, this time joining forces with fellow Parisian producer Gregory "Point G" Dorsa for a three-track workout on INFUSE. The experienced duo predictably hits its stride from the word go, serving up some swinging rhythms, hypnotic sub-bass and Salt & Pepa samples on peak-time tech-house box jam "Push It". There's a more percussive and slightly glitchy feel to the bongo-laden "Modulation Tropique", while banging B-side "Locoliente" feels like the kind of bouncy tech-house floorfiller that Sheffield sorts Swag used to do so well in their early 2000s pomp.

  2. FNC Burning (5:47)
  3. Dark Outside (8:04)
  4. Techyes No! (5:46)
Review: Bass Culture Records latest missive comes from Leo Pol, a producer arguably best known for blurring the boundaries between deep house and tech-house. The St Ouen Connexion member is at the top of his game throughout, starting with the pumping jazziness of "Caliente", where fluid electric piano lines and angular electronic pulses gleefully ride a stomping analogue beat. He impressively changes tack via the mind-altering two-step garage roller "FNC Burning", before opening the flipside with the attractive '80s Chicago deep house revivalism of "Dark Outside". To round things off, Leo Pol slams down a weighty slab of atmospheric techno bounciness rich in hissing hi-hats, slamming kickdrums and clandestine melodies ("Techeyes No!").

  1. Politics Of Dancing X D'Julz
  2. Politics Of Dancing X Oleg Poliakov
Review: After the success of the first experiment, Politics Of Dancing jumps on the collaboration mission for a second time and invites fellow Parisian dons D'Julz and Oleg Poliakov to get deep in the studio. Bass Culture boss D'Julz takes on the A side, and the results are a sleek, measured trip through minimal house with a dubby garnish. Oleg Poliakov's contribution takes on a woozier atmosphere thanks to a wobbly synth lolling through the track, but of course this is still crisp, functional dance music for the long haul dancefloor. Now we just have to wait to see who POD snap up next.

  1. Politics Of Dancing X Djebali (6:48)
  2. Politics Of Dancing X Franck Roger (7:19)
Review: The Politics of Dancing crew are launching a brand new venture here, instigating some choice collaborative action with their nearest and dearest, jammed out and cut to wax for your listening and spinning pleasure. Of course it figures that they'd start this project close to home, bringing in some of their Parisian brethren for two assured cuts of heads down, straight up house music. Djebali lends a hand on the A side, with a spread of swirling pad tones drifting around the sturdy drums, while Franck Roger brings a more flirtatious sound to the B side with playful diva samples and crafty synth lines played out in his inimitable style.

  1. I Should (6:52)

  3. Fiction (6:46)
  4. Interconnected (7:05)
Review: Mihai Popoviciu, from Sibiu in Romania is a name that is fairly synonymous with the whole Eastern European tech house sound these days. The talented producer has had some great releases of late on 8bit, Bedrock and Toolroom and this release marks his fourth for Hamburg powerhouse Poker Flat who present the new Fiction EP. On the A side we've got the deep and slinky late night groove of "I Should" with its sultry vocals atop making a real saucy hot impression. Next up "Twisted" is a tight and rolling cut that's perfect to lead into peak time action on a main room dancefloor. Its dub stabs, hypnotic pads and tough rhythms tick all the right boxes. On the flip "Interconnected" goes for some classic Chicago acid house in the vein of Adonis.

  3. Backfat (7:22)
  4. Cloak & Dagger (5:44)
Review: As far as we can make out, this is either a debut single from a previously unseen production talent, or a surprise move towards electro territory from a French indie-pop band whose last release was way back in 2010. Either way, it's a fine EP full of notable highlights. Chief amongst these is "Checksaus", a punchy electro roller blessed with "LFO" style bass, bustling rave-era stabs and lashings of spacey electronics. There's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere on the 12", though, from the Drexciya style Motor City electro of closer "Cloak and Dagger" to the bustling, stab-heavy electro/analogue techno fusion of clattering, funk-fuelled lead cut "Bambam".

  1. Reeva Numbers (11:32)
  2. Only Human (7:07)
  3. Moving Trains & You (6:51)
Review: Paul Lorraine's London/Barcelona based imprint Rhythm Cult has previously given us releases by Stephen Beaupre, Barem and Deadbeat and now serves us with a new one by the always impressive Alan Abrahams aka Portable with the Lovers & Players EP. "Reeva Numbers" is high tech and glitchy minimal, spanning close to twelve minutes; this track just builds and builds brilliantly and those church organs are an interesting touch. On the flip "Only Human" it's more beautifully haunting and emotive deep house as usual by Abrahams, reminiscent of his now classic "Hold On" and featuring his wonderful vocals. Finally "Moving Trains & You" is the most fierce effort on here; a dusty and rusty vintage house jam that grinds and clatters away furiously like a Hieroglyphic Being cut.

Review: Powerpill promises nothing but good times from an unknown source, from the day glo label art to the playful, upfront techno cut into the wax. This is no nonsense club stuff, leading in with the chirpy acid strut of "Track 1" before getting tangled up in the modulating electro lines of "Track 2". "Track 3" has a more overtly 90s vibe to it, calling to mind the early UK techno scene in its bleeping leads and dubby undercurrents. "Track 4" finishes the record off with the toughest jam of the lot, but it's still a nimble affair that shuns the trend towards pitch-black techno and instead embraces a spread of melodic threads throughout the track.

El Malekon (12")
Cat: TT 06. Rel: 30 May 18
  1. El Malekon (13:20)
  2. Rikileaks (11:06)
Review: Toi Toi Musik's latest salvo is something of a biggie. It brings together two stalwarts of the South American minimal techno scene: Chilean wonk-meister Ricarco Villalobos and storied Venezuelan Argenis Brito. As you'd expect, there's a humid and intoxicating feel to A-side "El Malekon", a trippy, 13-minute workout marked out by druggy, manipulated and layered spoken word samples, intricate and subtly shifting percussion programming and a restless, sub-heavy bassline. The groove is pleasingly loose and wayward, something we say a lot about Villalobos' productions in particular. Flipside "Rikileaks" is a little more locked-in, utilizing a more sturdy, tech-house style drum rhythm, mind-bending electronic effects and a more booming bassline. Curiously, it also features a vocal whose lyric includes the immortal words: "these sandwiches keep me going".

  4. Cu Balans (7:03)
Review: Barely two months have passed since Premiesku's last outing - the rock solid In Sfera on 20:20 Vision - and already they're back in action. This time round, they're back on Vakant, an imprint on which the prolific Romanian trio previously appeared in 2014. By now, we should know what to expect: dense, intricately programmed tech-house rhythms with plenty of instinctive swing, some druggy basslines and occasional bouts of ear-pleasing positivity. So while "Seria" rolls along in their usual percussive way, "Mai Suis" focuses the action around warm electric piano riffs and bustling, almost deep house style beats. On the flip you'll find the rubbery beats, throbbing sub-bass and fluttering electronics of "Cu Balans" and a superior, dub-flecked techno rework of the same track by Varhat.

Review: Pressure Point first surfaced on Northern Italian imprint Castanea with the Fragments EP which featured a great remix by minimal electro hero TC80 from France. Now the mysterious producer appears for Julie Marghilano's esteemed Sol Asylum imprint with the impressive Process Theory EP, where he pursues more impressive microhouse grooves and sourced from what appears to be a pretty detailed modular setup amongst other things. The title track calls to mind the glitched up and quirked out reductionist funk of Perlon favorite Spacetravel, as does the subtractive jack of "S-Trig" with its infectious bleeps and blips. On the flip, we've got what's probably the most straight up groove on here with "Meter": essentially a barebones rhythm workout but boy does it pack some bump and shuffle. Finally "Liquid Flow" ends the EP in deep and emotive fashion where hypnotic pads and a mix of analog and digital microsampling carry a bumpy groove and it's perfect for your Sunday afternoon aboard the Hoppetosse.

  2. Ability To Change Your Mind
Review: "The Einhorn EP" with Dario Zenker marks the come back of Bruno Pronsato on Telegraph. The release includes 2 marathon tracks between live and production. After living in Wasserburg, Dario Zenker comes back to Munich. He began his DJ career at the Ultraschall club alongside the likes of Acid Mario or Vitalic vs The Hacker & Hometrainer. 2006 is the year of his first productions on Balcon, Num and Telegraph. Bruno Pronsato (aka Steven Ford) has been subverting expectations within techno's upper echelons since 2003 but the Seattle producer took a circuitous path to reach his current lofty status. After his acclaimed releases on Orac, Musique Risquée, Milnormodern and Telegraph, 2006 would be the year of his consecration!

This will be his fourth release on the label, in addition to appearing on imprints as diverse as Archipel, Mothership and Naked Lunch over the years. The A side features the roaring peak time energy of the title track - all thunderous rhythms and hypnotic melodies galore.
