  2. Working K (Work It Out mix) (4:38)
  3. Working K (Krikor edit) (5:15)
  4. Working K (SB Forgotten Sounds mix) (6:40)
Review: Despite the pastoral, park-based imagery utilized on the sleeve, Denis Morin's Working K is hardly a paragon of gentle beauty. While the main mix does make use of some picturesque elements - twinkling pianos, cascading guitar lines and birdsong - these have been heavily effected with delay and reverb, and tumble down over a restless kick drum pattern and wild electronics. The trippy Work It Out Mix begins as a field recording-heavy ambient house number, before morphing into a chunk of quirky, tropical-fired oddness midway through. Elsewhere, Krikor turns it into a lo-fi EBM throbber, while the EB Forgotten Sounds Mix teases maximum beauty from Morin's original sounds whilst ensuring a steady dancefloor pulse.

Becki D EP (12")
Cat: SOUS 004SD1. Rel: 05 Jan 15
  1. Becki D (9:15)
  2. If Ya (11:49)
Review: Romanian label Soulsity has always trodden a different path to most tech-house labels, preferring to deliver tracks influenced by deep and soulful house rather than stripped-back German minimal. Label boss MP continues that trend on this EP, dropping a couple of notably soulful gems. Both "Becki D" and "If Ya" boast loose-limbed rhythms seemingly influenced by vintage British two-step, onto which his usual swirling chords, heady melodies and subtle vocal samples are layered. The title track also boasts a spacey, Detroit-influenced vibe, something that should appeal to the label's growing fan base.

  1. Start Get Yo Self (8:18)
  2. Generation House (6:24)
  3. No Bullshit (7:47)
Review: It would be fair to say that no other artist is quite as associated with Bass Culture Records' "Limited" offshoot as Mihai Popescu AKA MP. In fact, since the series' inception in 2016, he's provided all but one of the releases. Thanks to this latest 12", that remarkable record stays in tact. The Romanian producer explores his more positive side on opener "Start Get Yourself", a clever combination of sweaty, jacking machine drums and fluid, watery and downright dreamy electronics that runs for eight mesmerizing minutes. Flip the disc, first for the deliciously bass-heavy and bumping "Generation House", where jazzy electric piano motifs rise above a swinging rhythm track, and then the early British tech-house lusciousness of "No Bullshit".

  1. Selfsuficient (9:57)
  2. Neasteptat (8:44)
Review: Soulsity boss Mihai Popescu appears for the inaugural release of Steppin'Motion Records, following up some top releases on Mulen, Bass Culture and RORA in recent times. The Romanian scene stalwart, also known for his work under the names Marsomatic700 (with Sublee) and Aquaphresca presents two sublime cuts here. On the A side, we've got the hypnotic minimal funk of "Selfsuficient" - which is the kind of loopy and sunkissed jam you could imagine someone like Daniel Bell playing at some ungodly hour of the morning. On the flip, he picks up the pace a bit with the bump and shuffle of "Neasteptat" where its nice sense of swing is balanced out by some trippy dub chords atop for good measure.

  1. Ripple Effect (Marc Houle remix)
  2. Ripple Effect (Noel Jackson remix)
  3. Ripple Effect (Chloe remix)
Review: The singles accompanying Mr C's celebrated return to the album format keep on coming, this time drafting in some noted names to deliver remixes of "Ripple Effect". First up is Marc Houle who employs some of his trademark creepy bass tones to underpin a purposeful, driving slice of darkside party music. Noel Jackson is equally on edge with his version, although it's a more stripped down and sped up affair that borders on electro in its sense of tightly wound urgency. Chloe gets the run of the B-side to lay down a more varied remix that uses some punchy disco elements to create a more light hearted outlook on Mr C's original jam.

  3. Stand Up (Jay Haze remix) (6:31)
  4. Stand Up (Jay Tripwire remix) (7:53)
Review: Mr C is preparing to release a new album Incidents later this year, and ahead of his return to the recording fray he's dropping this single on his evergreen label Superfreq. "Stand Up" is a riotous, acid-laced call to arms directed at the challenges facing the clubbing community across the world. With a snappy electro backbone and a full-fat production, it's a track sure to stir the pot at a time when complacency could see even more clubs close under the onward march of gentrification. Jay Haze steps up to remix the track, turning in two versions that veer from dusty, cyclical drum workouts to peak time acid house sizzle.

Cat: LT 003. Rel: 30 Oct 17
  1. Memoria I
  2. Memoria ll
  3. Sprayer l
  4. Sprayer ll
Review: Mr Cloudy has a sizable back catalogue on labels like Entropy, Dubwax and Millions Of Moments, and now he's been snapped up by Local Traffic to impart his sumptuous dubby wares across four tracks. "Memoria I" and "Memoria II" let the A-side simmer in a bubbling broth of dub techno ambience, all shimmering chords undergoing heavyweight processing. "Sprayer I" is still immensely mellow, although a little rhythmic pulse creeps its way into earshot via the movement of the gravelly chords, and then "Sprayer II" rounds the EP off with something approaching a beat-oriented excursion through the same billowing clouds of dub techno finery.

  3. Black Pepper Crab (7:47)
Review: Established back in 2011, Singapore's Midnight Shift label has grown to reflect the diverse bookings across the house and techno spectrum that pepper their associated club nights. For example, the past four 12"s from the label have spanned Andreas Gehm, John Heckle, Eduardo De La Calle and Portuguese producer Kaspar. Up next it is Colin 'Mr. G' McBean whose Ternasek 12" arrives amidst a rich vein of killer singles from the man widely regarded as genuine UK house royalty. According to Midnight Shift, these three tracks were made after McBean was struck with inspiration on a visit to the Singaporean city of the same name, with aural markers of his time there sunk deep into the pulsing functionalism of the productions. As with the majority of Mr G material, this are prime club grade tech-edged house rollers.

  1. P Bar Jam
  2. Tripped Out
  3. End Of Day Jam
Review: Colin McBean is back on the case with yet more of his refined house reductions, whipping up a trio of high grade deep house considerations with all the elements you want from a Mr G record. "P Bar Jam" makes no bones about its inspiration, stamping out an energetic but utterly streamlined kind of club track that makes the most of a catchy chord line without ever pushing too hard, the drums dutifully ticking along, the sub bass wobbling underneath but everything in perfect harmony. It's the same on "Tripped Out", albeit in the context of a more introspective jam that would fare better away from the peak time glare. "End Of Day Jam" too speaks to a more mellow situation, in this case letting some sweet organ notes warm the cockles over a delicate but purposeful groove.

Review: Following the excellent instalment from DJ Skull, Mentha continues to gather pace as a house and techno label of note with this sublime offering from Hakim Murphy. While the Chicago native may be known for some bruising hardware house and techno a lot of the time, he's showing his more sensitive side on this release with delicate tracks that head into deep techno waters. The title of the EP says it all, as nimble, expressive beats merge with soothing, aqueous pad tones for a most satisfying of listening experiences. Fans of early deep techno a la B12 and Stasis will find much to enjoy here.

Review: Hakim Murphy brings some minimal heat to his own Synapsis Records and begins with the playful spookiness of "Jbonaza", while "Chicago Head" sounds like the inside of a midnight carriage on a busy New York subway. "Tender B" is pure, deep Chicago minimalism at its best, while "Gestation" sees Murphy warm up his stripped beats with a fat walking bassline similar to the one heard on Omar S' "The Shit Baby".

  3. Phylum (Bartaub version)
  4. Subglacial Funk
Review: Turkish producer Mutlu San steps up to Lessizmore as yet another example of the Belgian label being incredibly on-point when it comes to signings. The emergent talent from Istanbul has a luxurious sound that taps into the minimal vein while offering a richer spread of textures and moods than your average micro roller. "Deep Sea Mosaics" is certainly a highlight, and it's left to Tolga Fidan to do the reducing on his remix of the track. "Phylum" sees San team up with his production partner in Bartaub for a more linear beat track, but with "Subglacial Funk" he nudges a little more of that unpredictable magic into the mix without losing the dancefloor essence of the track.

  2. Take Me Back (Ilario Liburni remix) (9:49)
  3. Take Me Back (Ricardo Villalobos Mistuck Vill remix) (9:53)
Review: 1990 acid house classic "Take Me Back" by Miami producer William Torres gets a reissue on Belgian imprint Invade. The original 303 banger is featured of course, in all its squelchy, snappy and downright epic glory, but it's the remixes which are definitely most curious. The remix by label boss Ilario Liburni is a deep, druggy and bumping remix for modern dancefloors of the 9AM variety. On the flip the Ricardo Villalobos "Mistuck Mil remix" typically clocks in at just under ten minutes and is a pleasure to listen to in its entirety. He brings back the acid sounds of the original in a more restrained capacity over a tough 808 rhythm pattern, plus trippier vocals than the original.
