SB Relief (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: AKU 007. Rel: 12 Jun 17
  1. Cycle (7:14)
  2. MB (7:04)
  3. LA (7:13)
Review: Molly's years service as resident at Paris's legendary Rex continue to pay off as she gets deeper into her production craft. With a consummate understanding of full groove-focus, less-is-more elements and strong atmospheres, every production on rising Paris vinyl-only label really pulls you into its loopy allure. "Cycle" is a slinky tech roller that's built up around the percussive hook, "MB" is a much heavier, droning piece of pensive magic that will work perfectly as a calm before a peak set storm while "LA" washes over you with true pad hypnosis. In summary: the type of tunes that make you run to the decks and mix.

Monsieur Blue 004 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MOBLU 004. Rel: 14 May 18
  1. Track 1
  2. Track 2
  3. Track 3
Review: It's the fourth go round for Monsieur Blue, who steps back up to the plate with another three surefire jams from the slinkier side of the minimal house spectrum. "Track 1" is an exquisite trip through blue-hued keys and shuffling drums, striking a fine balance between the lounge and the dancefloor. "Track 2" takes a moodier approach, eking out mysterious chords and injecting a little juice into the low end to suit a more rugged situation, and then "Track 3" jettisons the ballast and pings off into a dubbed out sphere of house music perfectly crafted for the times you want to get lost at sea.

Monsieur Blue 003 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MOBLU 003. Rel: 29 Jan 18
  1. Track 1 (6:45)
  2. Track 2 (6:14)
  3. Track 3 (7:14)
Review: The mysterious Monsieur Blue returns for a third time to unfurl more of that supremely elegant, dusky deep house alchemy that has made his first two records so desirable. Capturing the woozy mood of the early evening or the late morning, "Track 1" billows out on a bed of mellow pads and an undulating, shuffling beat. "Track 2" does little to shake things up, instead maintaining that beautifully meditative atmosphere and coasting on gentle filter sweeps and sturdy, rolling percussion. "Track 3" injects a little more bite into the beat without sacrificing the gentle lilt of the melodic content, making this three impeccable slices of the deepest minimal house money can buy.

ZD27 EP (12")
Cat: PLRV 005. Rel: 01 Aug 18
  1. Nute50 (13:41)
  2. Little Ur Ex (8:14)
Review: Joe Montana aka Edoardo Fatovich is an Italian musician, DJ and producer who has been releasing music since 1993 across many seminal and now defunct labels - but more recently on Mindshake, 8bit and Claque Musique. Presenting the fifth release on fellow Italian imprint Pick.Sel here, we aren't sure whether these are some more unearthed gems from Fatovich archives or freshly made creations, but that's exactly our point - this is some timeless music on offer here. The A side features the emotive minimal tech house trip "Nute50" which could call comparisons to like minded legends such as Stewart S Walker or Akufen's earliest output. On the flip, "Little Ur Ex" is an exercise in reduced boompty business - the kind of micro-house that was popular in the mid noughties.

  1. Sonja Moonear - "99 Erikas"
  2. Ark - "Chantier"
  3. Noze - "2002"
  4. Vita - "Carefully Hiding" (feat Erika)
Review: Here comes the Katapult various artists 'Vol 3 Sampler 2', extracted from the compilation released last February. This record contains
4 well-worked and inspired tracks. First Sonja Moonear who tells us the story of a bloody sinking ship, the famous 'Erika'. Sonja is part
of Junction sm with Dandy Jack, here she delivers a dark theme but without heaviness, a serious groove! Then Ark, true to his non-
conformism, executes a rare house piece, that can be related to Herbert's 'Big Times', something between abstraction and jazzy house.
A masterpiece! Noze are the band that shakes the crowd all around the planet with their crazy live-acts, here we have their purest
electronic track with no vocals, deep instrumental with fat funky keys at the end. Then Vita aka Mikael Stavostrand, well known from
the house scene to the more experimental one, delights us in a sweet but tempered beautiful vocal track. Enjoy.

Stood Beneath The Sun EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: PHO 002. Rel: 15 Aug 18
  1. Intuition (7:19)
  2. Soul Love (7:49)
  3. Soul Love (Rich NxT remix) (7:04)
Review: Newcastle duo Moonlit Vision are back with a right killer on new German imprint Phorus, who presented a great inaugural release by Niko Maxen a little while back. The Stood Beneath The Sun EP features the deep down and dirty groove of "Intuition" (which would go down a treat at the afterhours), while the bass driven and percussive energy of "Soul Love" is more suited to the beach party - later that afternoon. It receives a ripper of a rework by London stalwart Rich NxT, which is quite fitting as the duo appeared on his What NxT imprint earlier this year. A must have for fans of funked up and tripped-out tech house in the vein of Djebali, Archie Hamilton or Jack Wickham. Tip!

  2. Working K (Work It Out mix) (4:38)
  3. Working K (Krikor edit) (5:15)
  4. Working K (SB Forgotten Sounds mix) (6:40)
Review: Despite the pastoral, park-based imagery utilized on the sleeve, Denis Morin's Working K is hardly a paragon of gentle beauty. While the main mix does make use of some picturesque elements - twinkling pianos, cascading guitar lines and birdsong - these have been heavily effected with delay and reverb, and tumble down over a restless kick drum pattern and wild electronics. The trippy Work It Out Mix begins as a field recording-heavy ambient house number, before morphing into a chunk of quirky, tropical-fired oddness midway through. Elsewhere, Krikor turns it into a lo-fi EBM throbber, while the EB Forgotten Sounds Mix teases maximum beauty from Morin's original sounds whilst ensuring a steady dancefloor pulse.

  1. Jayda (2:46)
  2. Firebomb (8:35)
  3. La Onda (7:31)
Review: Swiss producers Andre Schmid and Phillip Egger aka The Mountain People first made a splash a decade ago, just as the tired sounds of mid noughties minimal techno started to get phased out for the burgeoning sounds of new wave deep house: and it was these guys alongside fellow Swiss producers Agnes and Baaz that thankfully helped usher it in. In the last several years, Schmid (who now helms the project solo) kept a low profile; but lately he's come back with a vengeance: serving up some of the best music he's made ever. This release: the eponymous imprint's 13th release is no exception! A side cut "Firebomb" has all the MP hallmarks: dubby bass, booming toms and rolling drums backed by sexy and mysterious elements. On the flip, "La Onda" follows in suit but this one's not as nefarious: just very seductive and evocative. Afterhours dancefloor drama guaranteed.

Becki D EP (12")
Cat: SOUS 004SD1. Rel: 05 Jan 15
  1. Becki D (9:15)
  2. If Ya (11:49)
Review: Romanian label Soulsity has always trodden a different path to most tech-house labels, preferring to deliver tracks influenced by deep and soulful house rather than stripped-back German minimal. Label boss MP continues that trend on this EP, dropping a couple of notably soulful gems. Both "Becki D" and "If Ya" boast loose-limbed rhythms seemingly influenced by vintage British two-step, onto which his usual swirling chords, heady melodies and subtle vocal samples are layered. The title track also boasts a spacey, Detroit-influenced vibe, something that should appeal to the label's growing fan base.

  2. Generation House (6:24)
  3. No Bullshit (7:47)
Review: It would be fair to say that no other artist is quite as associated with Bass Culture Records' "Limited" offshoot as Mihai Popescu AKA MP. In fact, since the series' inception in 2016, he's provided all but one of the releases. Thanks to this latest 12", that remarkable record stays in tact. The Romanian producer explores his more positive side on opener "Start Get Yourself", a clever combination of sweaty, jacking machine drums and fluid, watery and downright dreamy electronics that runs for eight mesmerizing minutes. Flip the disc, first for the deliciously bass-heavy and bumping "Generation House", where jazzy electric piano motifs rise above a swinging rhythm track, and then the early British tech-house lusciousness of "No Bullshit".

  1. Selfsuficient (9:57)
  2. Neasteptat (8:44)
Review: Soulsity boss Mihai Popescu appears for the inaugural release of Steppin'Motion Records, following up some top releases on Mulen, Bass Culture and RORA in recent times. The Romanian scene stalwart, also known for his work under the names Marsomatic700 (with Sublee) and Aquaphresca presents two sublime cuts here. On the A side, we've got the hypnotic minimal funk of "Selfsuficient" - which is the kind of loopy and sunkissed jam you could imagine someone like Daniel Bell playing at some ungodly hour of the morning. On the flip, he picks up the pace a bit with the bump and shuffle of "Neasteptat" where its nice sense of swing is balanced out by some trippy dub chords atop for good measure.

  1. Ripple Effect (Marc Houle remix)
  2. Ripple Effect (Noel Jackson remix)
  3. Ripple Effect (Chloe remix)
Review: The singles accompanying Mr C's celebrated return to the album format keep on coming, this time drafting in some noted names to deliver remixes of "Ripple Effect". First up is Marc Houle who employs some of his trademark creepy bass tones to underpin a purposeful, driving slice of darkside party music. Noel Jackson is equally on edge with his version, although it's a more stripped down and sped up affair that borders on electro in its sense of tightly wound urgency. Chloe gets the run of the B-side to lay down a more varied remix that uses some punchy disco elements to create a more light hearted outlook on Mr C's original jam.

  4. Stand Up (Jay Tripwire remix) (7:53)
Review: Mr C is preparing to release a new album Incidents later this year, and ahead of his return to the recording fray he's dropping this single on his evergreen label Superfreq. "Stand Up" is a riotous, acid-laced call to arms directed at the challenges facing the clubbing community across the world. With a snappy electro backbone and a full-fat production, it's a track sure to stir the pot at a time when complacency could see even more clubs close under the onward march of gentrification. Jay Haze steps up to remix the track, turning in two versions that veer from dusty, cyclical drum workouts to peak time acid house sizzle.

Cat: LT 003. Rel: 30 Oct 17
  1. Memoria I
  2. Memoria ll
  3. Sprayer l
  4. Sprayer ll
Review: Mr Cloudy has a sizable back catalogue on labels like Entropy, Dubwax and Millions Of Moments, and now he's been snapped up by Local Traffic to impart his sumptuous dubby wares across four tracks. "Memoria I" and "Memoria II" let the A-side simmer in a bubbling broth of dub techno ambience, all shimmering chords undergoing heavyweight processing. "Sprayer I" is still immensely mellow, although a little rhythmic pulse creeps its way into earshot via the movement of the gravelly chords, and then "Sprayer II" rounds the EP off with something approaching a beat-oriented excursion through the same billowing clouds of dub techno finery.
