  1. Roots (5:56)
  2. Roots (instrumental) (5:53)
Review: Desolat head honcho Loco Dice finally takes the reins again, with his new groove entitled "Roots" which follows up top releases by Alvaro AM, Francisco Allendes & Pablo Inzunza. This is a crunchy, stomping, lo-fi tech house excursion that shows another side to this legend's musical repertoire. Moreover, it sees the him reflecting on his musical foundations and his connection to his proud hometown Dusseldorf, as well as Detroit and beyond. Think of this as a taster of his brand new long player entitled Love Letters, which will be released later in 2018. Dice's recent past has seen the master of robust house and techno funk serve up killer remixes of Moby's classic "Go" and his eclectic Underground Sound Suicide full length

  1. Break It Down
  2. Love Me High
  3. Love Me High (Fumiya Tanaka remix)
Review: In the spirit of Voom:Voom and all other manner of Germanic broken beat wares, the latest Ultrastretch 12" comes flailing out of the stocks in a loose-limbed workout of tight-popping drums that place sharp-angled rhythms at the forefront and let all manner of playful noises join in on the fun. "Love Me High" is a more woozy affair infected with low-end burbling synth tones and displaced vocal, but still the drums drop in decidedly live, while Fumiya Tanaka's remix pings off into true freak-out territory powered by a very minimal backbone and a pointed taste for the most unsettling noises that could be mustered from the depths of his studio process.

  1. Saturday Night (DJ-Kicks) (6:08)
  2. Arc (5:11)
  3. Alpha Wheel 4 (Ambient mix) (3:59)
Review: Matt Cutler aka Lone has been praised for his classic house perspectives that have earned him releases over the last 10 years on R&S, Werk Discs and of course his own Magicwire imprint. He presents the next installment in !K7's esteemed DJ Kicks series, where he claims to have stepped out of his comfort zone. As a producer, first and foremost, used to programming his own material across several albums, he used the same approach in compiling the material on the mix. The three tracks on offer on this EP are exclusive productions from the Nottingham based DJ - and taken from the mix. The emotive, late-night groove of "Saturday Night" (DJ-Kicks) takes you all the way back to the early 90s of Chicago, while on the flip we get treated to the raw and pulsing lo-fidelity jack of "Arc" and the sublime beatless journey that is "Alpha Wheel 4" (Ambient mix).

  1. Bigger Easy (8:54)
  2. Get Back (7:54)
  3. Get Back (Tomoki Tamura remix) (6:10)
Review: For the 20th release of the Valencian label Oblack, it is over to Los Pastores aka Snna and Nacho Arauz/Juliche Hernandez from the Canary Islands (DownHill Music). They gather up all their talents to come up with one of the most clubby, dance floor oriented tracks from the label thus far. "Bigger Easy" is classic late noughties style minimal that's big on druggy elements plus those pitch shifted vocals (a la Marc Houle) are a worthy addition. On the flip, "Get Back" is a funky electro house jam with a buzzy synth lead and bumpy bassline over its tight groove, plus those subtle disco influences thrown in for good measure work a treat. The remix by Japanese guy in Berlin, Tomoki Tamura, is the real winner on there though. Here he takes the track into reductionist afterhours territory, with all its dusty and sparsely hypnotic elements working in harmony.

  1. Open Door (11:32)
  2. 00000000 (18:45)
Review: Over the last two decades, few minimal house producers have amassed quite as impressive a body of work as Losoul, AKA German veteran Peter Kremeier. His vast discography contains all manner of hypnotic, locked-in classics, not least the trippy and funk-fuelled "Open Door". It was the producer's debut single way back in 1996 (the first of many on legendary imprint Playhouse) and still sounds suitably current all these years on. This reissue replicates the original track list, pairing the tough, loop-propelled disco-house/techno fusion of "Open Door" with the wonkier "00000000", a typically hypnotic and spaced-out affair in which Kremeier contrasts Clavinet and flute style loops with dubbed-out synth hits and a deliciously sparse-but-heavy groove.

  2. Kareen Ali - "Arnaldo Tamayo Mendez" (7:22)
  3. Anaxander - "Unspoken" (7:14)
  4. Michael Zucker - "Together" (7:13)
Review: Following a strong cast including Myles Serge, John Barera, DJ Skull and Hakim Murphy, Mentha continues its strong run of form with a various artists 12" that broadens the horizons of the high-grade deep house label. Michael Lovatt keeps things groovy and understated on "Tides", while Kareen Ali gets into a slow and trippy mood on "Arnaldo Tamayo Mendez". Anaxander's "Unspoken" brings some neo-soul synth lines to the table, and Michael Zucker turns out a brooding, introspective workout. Each track may have its own traits, but the whole record hangs together as a fine next step for a promising label.

  1. Bestyolle (10:17)
  2. Setup 4.1 (7:16)
  3. Bestyolle (Edward remix) (13:20)
Review: Parisian minimal house hero and Aeternum Records boss Lowris is back with more reductionist mini-funk grooves on this neat three tracker; his second release since for 2017 after his impressive appearance on Russia's Nervmusic. On the A side, "Bestyolle" sees him still carrying the flame for classic microhouse sounds, channelling the heyday of seminal imprints such as Force Inc. and Background. With rhythms comprised of found sounds with assorted trippy synthesis: it's heady stuff right here! Next "Setup" is definitely more dancefloor friendly with its dubby groove; albeit particularly lean, but allowing the subtle tape delayed drums and random bass pulses to create lovely trance induction. The backdrop of yet more field recordings add to the mystery. On the flip, Berlin hero Edward (White/Giegling) delivers an upbeat remix of "Bestyolle" using his signature style of dusty broken beat, to carry the odd sample collage of the original into new and adventurous territory.

  2. Pinball (6:11)
  3. Subterfugio (8:25)
  4. Pulse Counter (7:25)
Review: Carlos Sanchez aka Lowwax inaugurated his eponymous imprint last year with an impressive debut entitled Outlandishness, which saw him collaborate with Martyn Hodgson aka Tijn. The label's second outing features one Trujillo (formerly known as Mangelt) teaming up with Sanchez for some straight up minimal house action. The deep down and dubby "Ovillo Delona" kicks of the EP; this one is a raw and stripped back tool while the blips, blurps and bleeps of "Pinball" sounds like a modern take on Daniel Bell 's classic sound. On the flip, things take quite a turn; a hard one in fact, with the pounding and cavernous groove of "Subterfugio" more suited to Berlin's warehouse spaces and "Pulse Counter" going for a heady and hypnotic style for another great track.

  3. Barriere De Lumiere (Felipe Venegas Interpreation) (7:48)
Review: Felipe Venegas' Drumma imprint is back with a top release from one of minimal techno's true legends: Luciano. The Cadenza head honcho delivers two examples of his superb sonic sorcery on the Quarion EP. From the slinky and hypnotic epic "Barriere De Lumiere" making use of the Swiss-Chilean producer's examples of amazing hi-tech melodies, while "Be Bap Bop" is more straight-ahead, dancefloor ready tackle with its jacking reductionist bounce. On the flip, there's a remix by Venegas himself which takes "Barriere De Lumiere" down much funkier and polyrhythmic territory. It is perfect for those daytime party vibes on The White Isle this Summer.

  1. Esperanza (Luciano Flow Latino mix) (16:45)
  2. Esperanza (David Morales Red Zone mix) (11:03)
Review: Here's something we never expected to see: a musical hook-up between tech-house titan Luciano and veteran Def Mix sort David Morales, a man whose studio output has been rather limited in recent years. The duo wrote and produced the track together, before preparing individual interpretations. You'll find Luciano's Flow Latino Mix on side A. Clocking in at almost 17 minutes, it's an impressive exercise in percussion - think South American hand percussion underpinned by drum machines - with a thrillingly blissful three-minute ambient breakdown midway through. As you might expect, Morales' Red Zone Mix is a little "fuller" sound wise, with the veteran New Yorker wrapping picturesque synth lines and bubbly electronics around the duo's impeccable Latin percussion.

  2. Indaco (Hiver Reconstruction)
  3. Canadian
  4. Canadian (Thor Reconstruction)
Review: Torino label We Play The Music We Love has already made a strong start with some immersive turns by Trevor Deep Jr and Rills, and now they provide a platform for Italian duo Luminer. "Indaco" is a charged up dub techno excursion with crisp percussion to propel the classic chord shimmer that course through the centre of the track. "Canadian" takes a deeper direction with a crafty tapestry of synth flares and a more understated rhythm section. Hiver's reconstruction of "Indaco" opts for a crooked electro foundation, nimble acid line and a shapeless swell of pad tones as the key ingredients, and then Icelandic techno champ Thor whips up a sharp-strutting dub techno variation of "Canadian" that sits comfortably with the Luminer tracks.
