  4. Broken Shells (5:39)
Review: Up next on Jennifer Cardini's ever surprising label are Italian expats in Berlin Hinode, who head up the Science Fiction imprint. It has presented tracks by the likes of NGLY, Jared Wilson and DJ Richard over the years - which gives you an idea of the gritty sound these guys are pushing. The Magnetic Field EP features three lo-fi and all analogue sounding cuts that you've come to expect from the pair: the A side features two grinding 303 led killers, but we particularly enjoyed the rusty and dusted down sleaze of "Render" featuring those seductive, delay drenched vocals. On the flip, "Toxic Hill" is the kind of techno that crosses over into EBM aesthetics, much like Phase Fatale or Blush Response are known to, while "Broken Shells" goes out all guns blazing on this trippy and hypnotic stomper.

  4. Back Problems (8:12)
Review: Back in October, Fabian Winkels donned the Ho Do Ri guise for the first time, delivering a fine minimal funk two-tracker. For this swift follow-up, he's returned to the INFUSE label he previously graced under the Fabe alias. Like its predecessor, Lost In Betty's Ford boasts swinging, funk-fuelled tech-house cuts driven forwards by rubbery rhythm tracks, jammed-out basslines, and glitchy, cut-up samples. While the two deep house-informed flipside cuts are rather good, the real heat is on the A-side. Choose between the subtle, garage-influenced shuffle of "Elotrans", and the elastic tech-funk of "High Level Booster". Both, though, are well worth heavy rotation.

A Time Before Now EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: IMM 042. Rel: 18 Jan 16
  1. A Time Before Now (Millennium mix) (7:08)
  2. Rebuilding (original mix) (5:10)
  3. On The Road (original mix) (6:30)
Review: Immigrant Records launched in 1998 and after a six year hiatus is back with an EP produced by US techno veteran Casey Hogan - his first vinyl release since 2008. Casey emerged in the late 90's with fellow techno legends Adam Beyer, Dietrich Schoenemann, Alexi Delano and Jesper Dahlback and is a pioneer of the original tech-house genre. Now a professional sound engineer, he is back doing what he does best and is currently working on new projects and remixes with Robin Porter for Immigrant and Shva Muzik. The EP's title track "A Time Before Now" was produced back in 2000 and has been pulled from his archives to show what tech-house was, is and should be, with it's shuffling percussion, arresting bass line, pensive chord lines and introspective vocals. "Rebuilding" highlights Casey's ability to create an effortless techno groove that chugs along with undulating sub bass and hypnotic synth patterns. "On The Road" takes a detour down a darker road with a haunting sub bass, trademark shuffling percussion and mesmerising chords.

  1. First Serve (7:24)
  2. Second Serve (7:52)
  3. Sliced (6:10)
Review: Thanks to an extended series of EPs for Dennis Ferrer's Objectivity, and a recent appearance on Steve Bug's Poker Flat Recordings, Andre Hommen has managed to stick his hand up and get noticed by all the right decision-makers within the tech-house game. That's why Marc Romboy has just gone and recruited him for his own Systematic imprint, the prefect home to Hommen's itchy, techno-fuelled house tracks. "First Serve" is a moody, grey-scaled industrial tune with a repetitive bassline spewing all sorts of molecular bleeps, and "Second Serve" feels like its perfect sibling, a calmer, more soothing house extension. "Sliced", on the other hand, is a different sort of excursion altogether, a mellow, acid-leaning, mid-tempo experiment that provides the deepest and most fascinating corner of this release.

Review: Peter Horrevorts once again kicks over the dancefloor as sound-vaporizer. He delivers with "Vaporize" a stunning two tracker of a timeless electronic masterpiece. "Vaporize Part 1" comes with a forward rolling bassline and a really big portion of lightness whereas "Vaporize Part 2" sounds more deep, with mysterious and moody elements, but also always warm-hearted.

  1. Guilty Pleasure (8:10)
  2. Paradon (8:46)
  3. Bohm (9:24)
Review: Danish rising star Denis Horvat has fast become a staple of the Exit Strategy camp - his brand of tech house creating serious dancefloor drama, additionally on top labels such as Innervisions and Afterlife. Not forgetting his own Aeon imprint, acting as an exclusive outlet for his signature sounds. His new sonic weapon "Guilty Pleasure" features a mesmerizing and hypnotic use of melody that's fast become his trademark, over a reduced futuristic groove that's going to sound perfect under a strobe light. Those gloriously tripped-out chime sounds return on the rather powerful "Paradon" (accompanied by some angelic soprano vocals) while the highly engineered "Bohm" will certainly elevate the crowd to a higher state of consciousness.

Damage (12")
Cat: TRUE 1267. Rel: 11 Nov 15
  1. Damage (7:40)
  2. Veins (7:24)
Review: Few producers are quite as skilled at creating atmospheric, tech-tinged big room house as Daley "Hot Since 82" Padley. Having steadily built his reputation via much-played releases on Noir, Moda Black, Get Physical and Knee Deep in Sound, Padley now finds himself a man in demand. Here, he makes his first appearance on Truesoul with a pair of Ibiza-friendly smashers. Flipside "Veins", a bold combination of bumpin' beats, woozy vocal samples, ghostly melodies and big percussive builds, is arguably the stronger of the two tracks, though many may prefer the stretched-out, slowly-building tech-house vibe of opener "Damage". Either way, expect to hear both tracks a lot over coming months.

Review: Magda, Troy Pierce and Marc Houle's occasional label Items & Things makes a welcome return, featuring four more superlative grooves from Marc Houle, Kasper, Thrill Cosby and Alexi Delano. The label was created as an outlet for the weird, experimental and beautiful sounds the trio often come across on their travels and "Spies & Lies" fits the bill perfectly, containing music that will stimulate, overwhelm and confound in equal measures.

  1. Whiterock (8:15)
  2. Seabirds (6:35)
  3. Isolar (8:51)
Review: The enduring UK tech house legend Danny Howells returns, surprisingly, on underground Mannheim imprint 8bit run by Nick Curly and Gorge. It must be quite the honour to host new material by the man long considered a 'DJ's DJ' by many over the years. These days Howell's keeps his releases to a minimum, aside from recent alliances with Rejected and Selador, for instance. It's all in all a fairly impressive EP we must say: from the euphoric, trance-induced energy of "Whiterock" to the deeply hypnotic tech house of "Seabirds" which is as slinky as you like it. On the flip, wait for the drop on the monster that is "Isolar" which will have you reeling in suspense - until that riser ends and that funky filtered house groove starts banging!

  4. Enrico Mantini - "Howl012.4" (5:54)
Review: Minimal house heroes Verrina & Ventura aka Howl Ensemble return, with the twelfth edition of their eponymous imprint and they are joined by some current Italian scene favourites. The boss duo step up first to represent, on the deep and rolling hypnotism of "Howl012.1" (the rest of the track titles follow in suit) followed by a funky, dusty deep house jam by Bologna's Nudge - which will appeal to fans of the Robsoul sound. On the flip, Brindisi's 616 follows up a great release on Manitou last year with his offering; an infectious, swing-fuelled tech house tool in the vein of iO Mulen or Jack Wickham. Finally, be prepared for some classic rave unearthed on the euphoric and uplifting "Howl012.4" by the legendary Enrico Mantini - most likely dug up out of his extensive archives.

  3. Isolation (6:06)
Review: Hunter/Game project was a project born thanks to the artistic inspiration of two Italian producers based between Milan and New York. They are known for some kick ass loft parties named Just This where they are known to express their unique sound not to mention the label of the same name. Following up a great release on Kompakt last year, the duo serve up some brooding analogue techno jams for the next release on their label in the form of "Dead Soul" a dusty and minimal excursion that works some hypnotic magic in the tradition of Mathew Jonson. Joey Anderson's remix up next takes the track down sublime deep house territory with its mesmerising FM bell tones throughout, until "Isolation" hammers the message home in style on this epic journey track powered by furious drums and wailing synth leads.

  4. Hush Hush (7:06)
Review: A warm welcome back to London-based Dane Jacob Trier Hanson AKA Jacob Husley, who returns to action after a near four year hiatus. He starts in confident fashion via "So Hot", a fine fusion of lo-fi house and tech-house rich in sturdy kick-drum beats, dubbed-out synthesizer motifs, memorable vocal samples and rumbling bass. It comes accompanied by a couple of notable remixes. First, Samuel Andre Madsen provides a "Reshape" that wraps subtle Kalimba style melodies around a sparser - but no less weighty - tech-house groove, before Dubsons re-casts the track as an acid bass-propelled chunk of spacey peak-time house. Husley's ultra-deep and undulating bonus cut "Hush Hush" is also worth a spin.

Cat: MHR 109. Rel: 18 Oct 17
  1. Careo (5:41)
  2. F-Bomb (6:08)
  3. Trampoline (7:00)
Review: Tring's finest Huxley returns outside of his usual imprints such as Aus or his own No Ideas for Matthias Tanzmann's Leipzig powerhouse Moon Harbour: with with three surefire dancefloor cuts of slinky and grooving tech house. The pumping and directly executed funk of "Careo" is perfect to make that transition into the busy period on a Saturday night. On the flip, he takes things into the darker and more dramatic realm; we have the near tribal ecstasy of "F-Bomb" with its powerful toms thundering away alongside those gloriously jacking vocals that are somewhat familiar. This one is reminiscent of the sounds coming out of NYC round the turn of the millennium by the likes of Cevin Fisher. Some more great stuff by the lad known to his Mum as Michael Dodman.

Cat: APO 020. Rel: 11 Mar 16
  1. Old In On (8:46)
  2. Mini Ass (7:26)
  3. Scris Frumos (7:26)
Review: Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Soundorom and Shonky's revered imprint is testament to their plight for world clubland domination. After a great last one by Ukranian minimal house hero iO (Mulen), the trio serves us with Italian producer based in Berlin Ivan Iacobucci, who's had releases previously on Holic Trax and King Street in a career that has spanned 26 years. "Old In On" is a loopy and reduced, bass driven deep house jam that will appeal to minimal heads as much as it would to deep house DJs. On the flip "Mini Ass" is an oddball and trippy minimal house odyssey with bumpy bass, tightly programmed rhythm and some wacky sound design. Finally "Scris Frumos" is the kind of stripped back house that'd work perfectly for the sunrise set at Concrete or Get Perlonised respectively.

Skematic Tracks 2 (12" + poster)
Cat: CRE 040. Rel: 30 Aug 12
  1. Hannya (6:18)
  2. Magojiro (6:07)
Review: Over the course of a long release history Swiss duo In Flagranti have been seemingly quite happy to follow their creative urges, endlessly recycling their stylistic approach regardless of whether the results garner commercial and critical acclaim. This is very much evident on Skematic Tracks Vol. 2, with lead track "Hannya" discarding with their more recent heavily edited and smutty punk funk strut in favour of an understated and quite moody, reverb laden dub techno approach whose off the grid rhythmic base bears similarities to the recent Body Music EP from Powell. The equally unusually named "Magojiro" will probably find more favour with In Flagranti fans, a house jam that crams in plenty of disco infused funk, though like many tracks from the duo it plays out like one long tease. A rather large and unusually SFW poster is included.
