Humanized Pattern EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SEEING 002. Rel: 29 Aug 17
  1. Rarely Listening
  2. Humanized Pattern
  3. Seeing
Review: Swiss producer Alci first came to light with a run of releases on Robsoul, before migrating to other climes such as Apollonia. Now he makes a second appearance on his own Seeingsounds label with some refined minimal for those who like their beats crisp and intricate. "Rarely Listening" has a dreamy demeanour, but there's plenty of energy folded into the snappy rhythms and loping bleeps of the track. "Humanized Pattern" meanwhile ramps up the bugging funk for a swung and sassy run through micro house done with a whiff of French flair. "Seeing" resides on the B-side with a gloriously dubbed out line in melodies that float lazily over the top of the sharply focused beat.

Black (12")
Cat: HELLO 027. Rel: 30 Jan 17
  1. Black (9:15)
  2. Mink (7:55)
Review: As you might assume, ALEX Smith and DIGBY Smith are brothers. Brothers who grew up loving the same thing: TECHNO. The producers first began to appear back in 2014 on their own, effortlessly cool FLASH AS A RAT label, and have consequentially landed on the excellent Hello? Repeat. Two tracks are clearly enough to get their point and style across; the opening "Black" is in the same school of thought as the majority of Villalobos' releases, except that these dudes add in an extra layer of oddity, namely through the field recordings that they manage to blend into the minimalistic groove. "Mink" is more lively, a haphazard minimal techno number barely held together by an intricate fold of percussion elements that really would make ol' Ricardo very proud, indeed.

  4. MD Habitat (Vid Vai remix) (6:36)
Review: While he may have been operating in the underground for some time, Darren Allen's music is only just coming to light through his own Underlying Form label now. There's a range of styles on offer across this EP, kicking off with the subtle pulse of "Feel" before moving on to a distinctly French-flavoured micro house groove on "Inmost Cave" that wouldn't sound out of place on Telegraph Records. On the B side, "Routine Kills Inspiration" switches the mood up with a rougher sound palette, even if the arrangement is still a minimally-minded affair. Then it's left to Vid Vai to drop a complex reworking of "MD Habitat" loaded with intricate textures.

  4. Deceiver (5:20)
Review: Darren Allen's third EP to date comes through on his own Underlying Form label, and it's a pleasure to see the Northern Irish producer continuing to grow in both style and musical diversity. "Reconcile" is a stealthy tune, broken and shape-shifting in its approach to the groove, while "GPD (with Breakit)" fires off more charging percussion stabs amid the slabs of mutant bass. On the flip, "Bad Company" nudges along with a subby bass and what feels like a little disco sensibility, while "Deceiver" stomps out a killer techno pattern that feels like a whole new strain of sci-fi.

Asiko (In A Silent Mix) (12" in die-cut sleeve) (1 per customer)
Cat: DKMNTL10YEARS10 1. Rel: 27 Mar 18
  1. Asiko (In A Silent Mix) (Ricardo Villalobos remix - part 1) (15:31)
  2. Asiko (In A Silent Mix) (Ricardo Villalobos remix - part 2) (13:42)
Review: Tony Allen's "Asiko", the leading tune on his 1999 LP Black Voices, has been a favourite of our regardless of impeding remixes, reworks, or reissues. It's still a pinnacle of the future jazz movement, blowing everything else out the water in the process. Rightfully, Holland's Dekmantel have decided to resurrect its timeless qualities and to give German-Chilean legend Ricardo Villalobos the tools to deliver some reinterpretations. Thanks to Honest Jon's Records, the two have already worked together, and Villalobos' ritualistic percussion has proven to work wonders next to Allen's legendary drumming and arrangmements. In short, it's as if they were made for each other - two ends of the spectrum that merge beautifully. The firs remix is moody, funky, and absolutely lit, banging out hypnotic drums over deep bass and glitch sonics, while the second part strips the beats out in favour of more wide-eyed melodics, infused with a futuristic style of jazz that is prone to opening minds. Warmly recommended.

  1. Transforming (6:11)

  3. Touch Sensor (5:43)
  4. Tantalum (6:08)
Review: Helena is a record label based in Porto run by Goncalo (808). Limited vinyl only releases thus far have come courtesy of Module Werk, Aleks and Ephemeral and it is now over to one Altitude who, to those that know: is none other than Torontonian legend Matt Thibideau, who since the late '90s has been expertly executing dub techno experiments via his Blue Recordings imprint in addition to appearances on Daniel Bell's 7th City and more recently the promising Assemble Music: also from Portugal. A side cut "Transforming" has razor sharp precision in everything from the bass to those super tight dub chords and rhythms: shows the man is still as on-point as ever. Glacial aesthetics prevail well into the B side, with the deep and cavernous journey "Touch Sensor" and its immersive tones which gently scream 'welcome to the North' much in the same vein of Rod Modell or Brian Kage.

Crayon Classics (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: WI 04. Rel: 09 Apr 18
  1. Zulu Groove
  2. Warehouse Blues
  3. Thru
Review: British producer Mark Ambrose has been steadfast in the deep techno scene since the mid 90s, keeping his head down and slinging out refined, immersive tracks with a minimum of fuss. His Crayon label carried his most personal gear, and there was a lot of it, so now Was/Is have done the right thing and sifted through the catalogue to find the strongest jams for this Crayon Classics 12". "Zulu Groove" is a quintessential rolling groove, all pattering percussion and dubby FX threads, while "Warehouse Blues" ramps up the hi-hat sizzle and plots a course for the techno end of Ambrose's repertoire. "Thru" finishes the record off with a housier disposition, all shuffling beats and looped up melodic hiccups locked into an irresistible funk.

  1. Makossa (mix 1)
  2. Makossa (mix 2)
  3. Makossa (Teakup mix)
  4. Wagamama
Review: Mark Ambrose doubles up on his appearance on Was/Is with this strident bout of deep end dwellers, kicking off in style with the charged up strut and punchy mono bass of "Makossa (mix 1)," making a point of stepping into a more peak time sound. "Makossa (mix 2)" takes things in a more bugging direction, but there's still plenty of pressure to be felt in the wriggling low end mess and nagging hi hats. The Teakup mix of "Makossa" is a devilish broken beat track, and then "Wagamama" slips in a loopy melodic hook and lets a firm but freaky slice of techno roll out underneath.

  1. Unconditional Love (Siamak Floor Vision) (8:09)
  2. Retro Floor Vision Aspect (9:12)
  3. Tool (9:00)
  4. You Think You Know It (7:40)
Review: Indigenous Electronic is a recently launched vinyl-only label, seeking to showcase a combination of both known and undiscovered talent. The label's first release is a 4 track EP by Siamak Amidi, the creative director of Analog Room in Dubai, as well as a producer, DJ and Volt Music label boss. The EP reflects the producer's experience with the confluence of both analog and digital synthesis. The A side presents newer material while the B side covers some of his older unreleased work. "Unconditional Love" is a stripped down affair: deep, dynamic and ethereal without ever losing the focus on the groove with its tight production. "Retro Floor Vison Aspect" takes us further into trippier post 5am territory, also stripped yet with enough going on to keep the senses tantalized, the standout hook to the bassline, swirling micro electronics with a variated jacking high hat, tried and tested. Siamak's "Tool" is a deep techy driving affair, with light haunting pads above and throughout the track with original use of effects on the high end percussion. "You Think You Know It" is a rolling percussive track that comfortably rides the boundary between house and techno, with well defined low end and sweeping synth pads that once again demonstrates Amidi's abilities in the mix down to not swamp the track or dilute the groove. An EP for the DJ's DJ.

  4. Into A Liquid Broken Space (5:15)
Review: Last autumn, Andrea La Pietra impressed with a debut double-pack on Melliflow that variously doffed a cap to Detroit futurism, jack-tracks, off-kilter electro and deep techno. Unsurprisingly, this follow-up EP boasts a similar amount of dancefloor eclecticism. After beginning with the bleeps, wobble bass and funk-fuelled tech-house beats of "Theoretically", he variously doffs a cap to classic Swag material (the undulating machine funk of "Dream Catcher", deep and woozy house ("Random Continuity"), and UK garage-influenced electro (the sub-heavy, funk-fuelled surge of "Into A Liquid Broken Place"). Happily, it all sounds club ready, with the latter track sounding like a late night anthem in the making.

  1. Jay Anderson - "Didn't Care Too Much" (6:20)
  2. S II P - "Untitled" (7:50)
  3. Peshka - "Basic Instinct" (10:55)
Review: Bristol house imprint Banoffee Pies return with more subtle and hypnotic grooves. On the A side is the mysterious Jay Anderson with "Didn't Care Too Much". While not much is known of him yet, we are sure that will change once people listen to this track: deep minimal house that crosses over into electro much in the vein of Frenchman TC80 or what his peers on Japan's Cabaret imprint are doing right now. Next up, Greek up and comer Simonas Paplauskas serves up the rolling and entrancing afterhours cut "Untitled" which takes its cues from the current sounds of Romania: an immaculate production. On the flip, the entire side is handed over to Ukrainian producer Peshka, who delivers another jagged yet downright wacky and unique take on reduced grooves with "Basic Instinct".

Donner (coloured 12")
Cat: SF 003. Rel: 07 Aug 17
  1. Donner (6:58)
  2. Ebertplatz (7:01)
Review: Cologne twosome and renowned "Superfriends" Andhim return to action, this time wielding a large carving scythe and an enormous slab of kebab meat. Thankfully, "Donner" is not a glitchy minimal techno roller made out of manipulated kebab shop samples, but rather an attractive combination of drowsy analogue bass, Middle Eastern-inspired tech-house drums and rising and falling waves of mind-altering melody lines. It's rather tasty, all told (unlike donner meat), as is clandestine flipside "Ebertplatz". While underpinned by a typically Germanic groove and mildly foreboding chords, it's the duo's cascading electronic melodies and mind-bending analogue touches that really catch the ear.

  3. Stabilizer (4:36)
  4. Seita (5:36)
Review: De Grey launched last year with a 12" from Webstarr, and now it follows up with the raw, rough and ready sound of Jack Angle. "Week-End" is a lithe, percussive beast of a track that matches bloated kicks with glassy hits for a tracky but distinctive end result. "6PNHHPE" is a looped up, off-kilter affair that sports an industrial techno thread but heads into stranger territory with ease. "Stablilizer" is a more balanced, melodic affair but again those distinctive metallic tones pervade the mix and inject some real character into Angle's music. "Selta" takes this approach and whips it up into the most lively, peak-time minded belter on the whole record, sneakily tucked away on the B2.
