Klassisk EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: LYR 003. Rel: 19 Feb 18
  1. El Klassiko (8:17)
  2. Avocado In Blue (5:19)
  3. Bob (7:09)
  4. Deep Diff (5:36)
Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Flord King, who has popped up on Junk Yard Connections as well as regularly featuring on Lyssna. It's the latter label he returns to now, and he's got some focused, stripped down club fare to impart. "El Klassiko" is a shuffling, funky minimal house jam with some wriggling melodies and a subby bass throb, while "Avocado In Blue" does a quirkier turn with some crafty synth flex that really stands out from the crowd. "Bob" too is a distinctive cut with some detailed layers of dubby ripples and errant computer debris quivering and shaking over the mellow pads and steady beat. "Deep Diff" twists out some cheeky bass and an overall emotive mood that ends the record on a poignant tip.

Review: Florent has already released some tracks under Kompakt K2 imprint. Now featuring on his own Bodytalk label which first release became very popular and charted thanks to the Kiko remixes. This time we have a remix from the great and famous Jussi Pekka. A must have for all good German minimal lovers.

  1. Head First Then Heart
  2. Head First Then Heart (Ytre Rymden Dansskola remix)
  3. Electronique (Lephtee remix)
Review: Having already impressed with their first album and an accompanying string of singles for Buzzin Fly, Flowers & Sea Creatures return to Ben Watt's label with the pastoral tones of "Head First Then Heart". A tenderly picked guitar melds with drones and the tender vocal croons of Graham and Kosta, before slowly building over a Vangelis approach to bass and soaring melodies. Without a beat in sight, it's left to the remixers to inject some dancefloor energy into the new age folksters, starting with Ytre Rymden Dansskola. His clean and steady disco groove suits the sweet nature of the original, making for an emotive slice of straight-up house. Lephtee goes back into the realms of beatless experimentation as his moody version makes minor melodies out of those formative elements.

THIRDSTREAM 01 (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: THIRDSTREAM 01. Rel: 31 Jul 17
  1. Onda Tropical
  2. Musica Moderna (CDS Tribute mix)
Review: Alex Font has many strings to his bow, not least running the excellent Acme label, and here he is on one of his other ventures, Third Stream. With improvisation placed at the forefront of the creative process, Font turns out functional club tracks with curious kinks and moments of intrigue worked into the structure. "Onda Tropical" is definitely DJ friendly with its insistent percussive framework, but there are interesting diversions, fills and edits peppered throughout. "Musica Moderna (CDS Tribute)" meanwhile rolls on a more consistent groove, with a more organic set of drums pitched right at the heart of a long and winding DJ set.

  1. Visionaere
  2. Lo Que Quiere La Gente
  3. Los Hombres De Negro
  4. Latin Rhythms
  5. A Little Spicy
  6. La Rumba No Tiene Horario
Review: Valencia's Alex Font has released or remixed previously on the likes of Nervous, Multi Vitamins and Nite Grooves but returns on his new Acme imprint with a full length. On the Sabor LP, he joins the dots between rolling maximal house ("Visionaere"/"Los Hombres De Negro"), deep and drugged out after-hours shenanigans ("Latin Rhythms"), spacey microhouse ("A Little Spicy") and even a bit of traditional latin jazz on the quirky closer "La Rumba No Tiene Horario". Recorded and released since his return to his homeland after a three year stint in London, it's all in all a brilliant effort by a talented young producer and he's definitely still one to watch!

Third Stream 02 (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: TS 2. Rel: 27 Nov 17
  1. Paraiso Artificial (10:56)
  2. Els Peluts (8:22)
Review: Alex Font's Acme sublabel Third Stream seeks to move away from hype and social media nonsense to deliver a truly underground offering for the switched on diggers, and that's just what you get with this second installment on the fledgling label. "Paraiso Artificial" is a supremely detailed, psychoactive bug-out of a minimal house track. Around the steady, slender beat there's an immersive world of rippling textures and nagging tones that delight the mind, perfect for the dancefloor of any long-rolling underground party. "Els Peluts" is a more functional track that places the emphasis on the beat, ably slotting itself into the mix with any switched on reductionist DJ.

Wega EP (12")
Cat: IV 70. Rel: 27 Feb 17
  1. Wega (6:42)
  2. Pollux (7:46)
Review: Since 2012, Frankey & Sandrino have exceeded all expectations and are now easily one of the most alluring house duos on the scene. With releases for imprints such as Drumpoet Community, Mule Musiq, Kompakt and Innervisions, among others, their name is instantly recognisable for their sound and artistic diversity. This new EP for Innervisions leads with "Wega", a tune that manages to blend a variety of musical elements under one roof; a minimal percussion groove is wrapped tightly around a myriad of Hispanic chanting, rhythmic distortions and a tubby undertone, equating to one gorgeous dance escapade. "Pollux" is similarly sparse and multi-faceted, except that the vocal swarms are now replaced by a sublime cascade of crystalline synths, aqueous electronics, and their inimitable use of outernational flavours.

  2. Methods In Madness (2:58)
  3. Instrument (Soul Capsule On It) (7:19)
  4. Instrument (Soul Capsule Off It) (6:29)
Review: Now here's a classic. Originally released at the turn of the millennium, Music For Freaks reissue the Methods In Madness EP by the label honchos themselves - Freaks aka Justin Harris and Luke Solomon. Featuring the boompty Chi-town shuffle of "Look Behind You" dub by local heroes Tim Shumaker and Tim Kvasnosky aka Home & Garden - who've been fairly quiet in recent years. The slo-mo acid trip that is the title track rounds up the A side. On the flip, we have two versions of "Instrument" by master minimalists Soul Capsule aka Baby Ford and Thomas Melchior. The On It version is a bumpy form of cyclical hypnotism that you could only expect from the respected pairing. The Off It version strips things down even more, left with a simple breakbeat and bass pulsations.

  4. Yek 122-12 (4:40)
Review: Mohammad Reza Mortazavi is the perfect companion to Burnt Friedman's steely, minimalistic shades of broken dub techno. The Iranian percussionist comes as a surprise addition to the Nonplace catalogue, but he certainly makes for an even more cerebral drumming experience than the already off-kilter world of Friedman's tunes. Both the A-side's mixes of "Yek" are just on the right side of dark, combining Eastern influences together with colder, more industrial executions from the West. On the B-side, we have a similarly frenetic experience, where metallic drums collide with deep baselines and polyrhythmic flows spanning the full circle. Well, this might just be our favourite Nonplace yet!

Review: After obsessing about Sascha Funke's tracks for a long time, Rebolledo finally got the chance to release some music by him on his new label You And Your Hippie Friends - a sublabel of Hippie Dance which he runs with Superpitcher. Funke, a veteran of the Berlin, scene only recently came back to solo production after years of working on the Saschienne project together with partner Julienne Dessagne (AKA Fantastic Twins). He has had some terrific releases on Endless Flight, Turbo and Multi Culti. The Acatenango EP features three fervent tracks: from the neon-lit Italo disco groove of "Aggravate", to the esoteric trip going deep into the exotic that is the title track - this one will hypnotise truly you into submission.

  3. Dalailoop (0:17)
Review: Jon Voickmer and Michael Salsal's Fusal project was worthy of a home like the Malonian label, and we'd been looking out for the duo's next release ever since their debut for 87 Records back in a now distant 2015. "Calimero" picks up where they left off, and we're back with another fine assortment of post-minimalistic glitch and neo-classical experimentation - a true head-spinner in all senses of the word. "Handicap" is no less entrepreneurial in its choice of sounds and melodic constructions, except that the groove feels a lot more dance-centric here, which is revved up one step further on the frantic patterns of "Delailoop", another intriguing minimal excursion that will undoubtedly please the electronic shut-ins.

Es Pion EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: CNTR 003. Rel: 23 Feb 16
  1. Es Pion (12:34)
  2. Bass Villain (8:52)
  3. The Hideout (6:07)
Review: Young Romanian label with big potential presents us with more homegrown talent in the form of The Future Future Sound. Not much is known of this producer but they've got some skills in the studio, we do know that. Starting off with "Es Pion" this is the kind of wacky, tripped out deepness that's undoubtedly influenced by modern homegrown greats such as Vid or Barac as it is Baby Ford or Thomas Melchior. Very paranoid and hypnotic stuff for the after-hours in all its nearly 13 minute glory. On the flip is "Bass Villain", don't worry it's not a dubstep thing, on the contrary; this is more on the avant-garde reductionist tip; think Ricardo Villalobos or Petre Inspirescu. Very abstract and very deep indeed. Finally "The Hideout" throws us a bit of a curveball on this drugged out, experimental hip hop jam, it's interesting!

Cat: EQV 06. Rel: 23 Apr 18
  1. Shelf Cloud (7:40)
  2. Halo (6:30)
  3. Haze Phenomenon (8:30)
Review: Rising Greek producer G.U.S. steps up on Equivalence with some pumped up vintage techno sounds that take more than a few cues from the UK. "Shelf Cloud" strikes a fine balance between tough and dreamy, using a twitchy set of drums moving at a decent pace and flooding them with atmospheric pads and a slice of vocal that forms a central hook to the track. "Halo" goes even deeper into British territory with its chopped up breakbeat funk calling to mind the dexterous sample magic of Stasis, and then "Haze Phenomenon" heads into deep tech house territory riding a pumped up shuffle beat and swooping pads.

This EP is made up with 2 original track's lasting up to a good 16 minuets each. A1 - Youth Riot & B1 - Four For Four. The heart and soul of this EP is represented by the rioting youth struggling for a better future in a society riddled with corruption and selfishness."

  2. Drunk & Disorderly (7:49)
  3. Fraudulent Cheque (7:32)
Review: Parisian producer Gab Jr has been active for a couple of years now, mainly appearing on Automatic Writing with a quirky strain of minimal house that harks back to the fine legacy of leftfield 4/4 oddities that have hailed from the French capital since the 90s. Albion Records clearly dig that sound, having previously welcomed Ark into their ranks, and Gab jr sounds right at home slapping down the chunky rhythm and spannered sound bites of "Indecent Exposure." "Drunk & Disorderly" pares the beat down and ramps the freakiness up with a killer synth hook and some oddball vocal processing, and then "Fraudulent Cheque" bowls across the B side in a fit of tough drums and screwy micro sampling.

Review: After an excellent first release featuring Freerotation lynchpin Steevio, Russ Gabriel's Rivers Of Groove label returns with a pair of excursions into lush, bubbling techno from Gabriel on his own. As a first generation UK techno stalwart, it's little wonder that he can turn out productions as accomplished as these, but there's no sense that he's treading water. "Ambulate" bears the hallmarks of modular production, all twinkling, morphing synth tones chiming around a delicate beat, while "Dover Calling" favours a snappier electro palette, but both stand out from the crowd for the sheer quality in the production, the warmth in the composition and the needlepoint focus given to every shred of detail in this crucial cuts.
