Quadrilogy Part III/IV (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: VCLUB 0253. Rel: 12 Sep 18
  1. DeWalta & Topper - "About Time" (12:34)
  2. Audio Werner - "Long Haul" (10:05)
Review: Luc Ringeisen has presented some terrific cuts as part of the ongoing Quadrilogy series on his Vinyl Club imprint over the last year, with highlights coming courtesy of Andrea Ferlin, Mariano Mateljan and Dubfound. For the third installment in the series he's prepared something special, with these artists taking over an entire side of the 12". First up are Berlin scene stalwarts DeWalta (Meander) and Topper (Sleep Is Commercial) on "About Time" which is a dose of moody and tripped-out sci-fi minimalism, which is perfect for an Autumn afterhours aboard the Hoppetosse. On the flip, they've reeled in the man Audio Werner, who displays his idiosyncratic style once again on the dark and dubby groove reductionism of "Long Haul".

  1. Other Worlds (7:10)
  2. Other Worlds (Swoy remix) (8:01)
  3. Ramen N' Bread (8:13)
  4. U09 (6:45)
Review: We were hugely impressed by Dhaze's previous EP on Blind Box, whose four "crisp" and "lean" tracks bristled with razor-sharp beats and "just the right elements of light and shade darting in between". This outing on Druzhba explores similar sonic territory, while offering up a series of cuts that feel warmer and chunkier in tone. Check, for example, the smooth and dreamy peak-time bounce of the subtly spacey "Other Worlds", which is in turn given a more straight up, glitchy tech-house overhaul by Swoy. Over on side B, Dhaze's love of intergalactic synthesizer chords is indulged further on the swinging, garage-influenced tech-house funk of "Ramen N' Bread", before he rounds of another solid EP via the crispy tech-house box jam "U09".

  1. 47 Tucanae

  4. Ichnusa
Review: Dhaze has been busy in the last five years, hopping from the digital label scene to more established wax imprints such as Metroline Limited and Electronique. His minimal sound has plenty of admirers it would seem, and now he can add Blind Box to the list. His sound is a perfect fit on the label, focused on crisp, lean floor tracks with steady, razor sharp beats and just the right elements of light and shade darting round in between. B2 track "Ichnusa" might well be the secret weapon on this record with its playful chord lilt and easy going dubby mood.

  1. Geisterfahrer (7:02)
  2. Geisterfahrer (Factory Floor remix) (6:15)
  3. Drachenfels (8:15)
Review: Die Wilde Jagd are Sebastian Lee Philip. Ralf Beck is musician and producer from Dusseldorf. He has released several albums as part of the duo Nalin & Kane, as well as under the name Unit 4. He collects old synthesizers and effect pedals and has worked with Karl Bartos. In his studio Uhrwald Orange, he has recorded music by Propaganda, Kreidler, Black Devil Disco and many more. Sebastian Lee Philip is part of the Berlin-based electro-wave duo Noblesse Oblige and composes music for theatre and radio plays. Between 2001 and 2006 he lived in London where he ran the club night 'Caligula' and performed as a DJ. "Geisterfahrer" is cosmic and spacey kraut rock that sees the pair propel you into the stratosphere. British duo Factory Floor's excellent remix strips things back and takes things on a darker and technological turn with this minimal electro epic. On the flip, "Drachenfels" sees Beck and Philip do their thing again: lose yourself in this eight minutes of absolute bliss awash in reverberated drums, delayed guitar riffs and splendid arpeggios.

  1. Dreamscapes (9:53)
  2. Timepiece (8:04)
  3. Dust (6:48)
Review: Diferit, AKA prodicer Grigoriou Cosmin, has never been the most prolific producer. In fact, this is only his third 12" in four years. It is, though, rather good. A-side "Dreamscapes" is as fluid, colourful and hazy as the title suggests, with gaseous chords and lilting synthesizer melodies slowly rising above a bubbling groove that sits somewhere between deep house and Romanian minimal techno. The producer's low-slung, late night tech-house influences come to the fore on "Timepiece", whose most exciting features are a trippy analogue bassline and punchy machine percussion, while "Dust" is a pleasingly rich and groovy chunk of early morning deep house for those who like their records locked-in and hypnotic.

  1. Jam
  2. Dimplex (Vera remix)
  3. Dimplex
Review: Antony Difrancesco is only a new name to electronic music, and an enigmatic one at that. He last surfaced on a label called Coquette Records in 2012 which was their and his only release. Some two year's later he reappears on Othertones, a London label, and provides them with their second release. The title cut, "Jam", is a 909 weighted club cut sprinkled with crackly effects and a light draping of industrial ambience. On the B-side there's Vera's thrumming sine wave mix of "Dimplex", which in its original form is cold, haunting and alien sounding. Deep stuff.

Vio EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MOSSV 004. Rel: 20 Jul 15
  1. Vio (7:12)
  2. Left (7:14)
  3. Left (Martinez Concealed mix) (12:00)
Review: For Moss Co.'s fourth release, and first solo artist EP, they look to London's Antony Difrancesco. Antony's selective output on other London labels like Fuse and Othertones, has seen regular support from the highest echelons of house and techno. His enviable collection of hardware, and seemingly endless flow of creative ideas, are displayed brilliantly on MOSSV004. The record opens with Vio - a mystical track, filled with toms, bass and groove tied together with ethnic strings and an eerie pad. Left takes more of an experimental turn, with playful bass bouncing around the spectrum, complemented with analogue squelches. A beautifully warm pad brings an element of romance to the track, and crisp tops keep it dance-floor focused. On the remix, Martinez uses his signature Concealed sound to devastating effect, transforming track into a sleek, minimalistic, late-night affair.

Ijzeren Rots (hand-stamped 1-sided 12")
Cat: DIGWAH 03. Rel: 10 May 18
  1. Ijzeren Rots (8:32)
Review: Since launching in 2006, the men or women of mystery behind the sneaky Digwah series have delivered a couple of sought-after, single-sided 12" singles that blend familiar samples with rock solid tech-house grooves. Predictably, this third volume in the series sticks closely to the blueprint, wrapping twinkling electric piano motifs and a restless, looped bassline around a rhythm track rich in jazzy hi-hats, snappy drum machine snares and tough, locked-in kick-drums. It's arguably closer to deep house than its predecessors, with the tactile and warming samples - lifted, it seems, from the late '60s West Coast rock record - helping to create a rolling, late night feel. The previous Digwah releases sold out quickly, so you'll have to act fast to secure a copy of this one.

Something Else (1-sided hand-stamped 12")
Cat: DIGWAH 02. Rel: 20 Dec 16
  1. Something Else (11:22)
Review: Mystery label Digwah debuted in the summer, with a soul soaked trip into minimal techno territory that was supported by Ricardo Villalobos, amongst others. Like that 12", Something Else is a single-sided, hand-stamped affair, with no information given about the identity of the producer (or producers) involved. This cut retains the late night techno vibe of the original, but with percussion and whizzing electronic noises that recall classic tech-house from the likes of Swag, Rob Mello and David Duriez, rather than Berghain-friendly minimalism. The subtle, party-minded approach is confirmed by the use of cut-up vocal samples from Cuba Gooding Jr's "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend", which also featured on Nightmares On Wax's 1990 bleep techno anthem, "Aftermath".

Can I Change My Mind? (1-sided 12")
Cat: BK 12X1202. Rel: 06 Dec 16
  1. Can I Change My Mind (13:22)
Review: Sometimes, a single side of vinyl is all you need. That's certainly the case here, as Where To Now regular Beatrice Dillon delivers her most impressive and mind-altering club cut yet. Across a mesmerizing 13-minutes, Dillon distills the essence of Minimal techno, dub, West African rhythms, early jungle and experimental noise into one, constantly evolving dancefloor burner. While the blazed vibe of dub, and the crackle of vintage vinyl are ever-present throughout, it's the subtle shifts in rhythmic emphasis - from 4/4 to breakbeat, via intricate polyrhythms - that make "Can I Change My Mind" such an alluring prospect. Few 13-minute tracks can captivate a dancefloor throughout, but this certainly can.

Iso Grifo (reissue) (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SL 5. Rel: 25 Jun 18
  1. Iso Grifo
  2. Lava
  3. Round
Review: In the field of minimal house reissues, this is a big deal. Perlon main man Dimbiman doesn't appear on wax often, but when he does he makes it count. This early release on Baby Ford's seminal Pal SL was originally out in 1998, when minimal house was a vague concept at best on the most outer reaches of dance music. "Iso Grifo" itself remains a masterclass of spine-chilling space and perfectly strange sonic matter, while "Lava" pushes the notion of reduction dance music to its absolute limit. "Round" is an even more immersive affair that hides many subtle layers within its seemingly simple construct. Quite simply groundbreaking stuff, and highly sought after so don't sleep on it.

Tanto Amor (12")
Cat: PNR 008. Rel: 07 Nov 17
  1. Tanto Amor (14:28)
  2. Wasame (13:28)
Review: After touching down on our charts with two great EPs back in 2014, Portugal's Diogo went silent on us...until now. The young producer returns with a stylish two-tracker for the Pluie / Noir label, that itself born in Portugal but now based in the heart of Berlin's techno scene. Diogo's music here, however, is a sparse and compelling affair, made possible on the A-side by the minimal glitches and bumps of "Tanto Amor" - as wavy as it is euphoric! On the flip, "Wasame" reminds us of Villalobos at his most poignant, and Diogo carries exactly the same sort of flair for crafting intricate beat cocktails, tightly packed together and filled to the brim with wild-eyed of sonics and samples.

Review: Disuasiv are the duo of Romanians in Milan Dragosh and Andi Parlogea, who have had previous releases on tastemaker labels such as Broquade, Memoria and Pointilisme Musique. Their new 'Project M' EP shows off their flair for energetic tech house with futuristic tendencies once again, for local imprint Curtea Veche. This release inaugurates their new limited series, but keeping in kind that the parent label has released top notch Eastern European artists such as Sepp and Herck: so you know you are in good hands. The rolling and hypnotic "Brother Loopy" is quality gear to rock the crowd at that peak moment, with its tough groove. It also gets an amazing remix on the flip by homeboy Cally, which takes it deeper into after hours territory: the sort of track you'd imagine Cezar dropping at 7 in the morning! The percussion driven title track is assisted by an equally powerful bass and airy pads - this will mix in well with your Sepp or Nu Zau records.

Calypso (1-sided 12")
Cat: DEGU 024. Rel: 21 Mar 18
  1. Calypso (6:23)
Review: A few years back, Ditongo - an alternative alias for Peru-based nu-disco producer Batongo - served up a quartet of tasty re-edit releases before heading back underground. Here he resurfaces with what we believe to be one of his strongest cut-jobs to date. Sure, there's only one track on offer, but it's an absolute beast. "Calypso" sees him playing around with a disco-era soca cut, brilliantly teasing out a punchy, extra-percussive rhythm track before unleashing elements of his steamy, Caribbean source material. There's a superb breakdown and build up midway through, too, which the producer uses to introduce a killer spoken word passage. In other words, it's a simple but brilliantly effective peak-time re-rub that's more than worthy of your hard-earned cash.
