Vio EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MOSSV 004. Rel: 20 Jul 15
  1. Vio (7:12)
  2. Left (7:14)
  3. Left (Martinez Concealed mix) (12:00)
Review: For Moss Co.'s fourth release, and first solo artist EP, they look to London's Antony Difrancesco. Antony's selective output on other London labels like Fuse and Othertones, has seen regular support from the highest echelons of house and techno. His enviable collection of hardware, and seemingly endless flow of creative ideas, are displayed brilliantly on MOSSV004. The record opens with Vio - a mystical track, filled with toms, bass and groove tied together with ethnic strings and an eerie pad. Left takes more of an experimental turn, with playful bass bouncing around the spectrum, complemented with analogue squelches. A beautifully warm pad brings an element of romance to the track, and crisp tops keep it dance-floor focused. On the remix, Martinez uses his signature Concealed sound to devastating effect, transforming track into a sleek, minimalistic, late-night affair.

Cat: OTONES 002. Rel: 10 Sep 14
  1. Jam
  2. Dimplex (Vera remix)
  3. Dimplex
Review: Antony Difrancesco is only a new name to electronic music, and an enigmatic one at that. He last surfaced on a label called Coquette Records in 2012 which was their and his only release. Some two year's later he reappears on Othertones, a London label, and provides them with their second release. The title cut, "Jam", is a 909 weighted club cut sprinkled with crackly effects and a light draping of industrial ambience. On the B-side there's Vera's thrumming sine wave mix of "Dimplex", which in its original form is cold, haunting and alien sounding. Deep stuff.

Something Else (1-sided hand-stamped 12")
Cat: DIGWAH 02. Rel: 20 Dec 16
  1. Something Else (11:22)
Review: Mystery label Digwah debuted in the summer, with a soul soaked trip into minimal techno territory that was supported by Ricardo Villalobos, amongst others. Like that 12", Something Else is a single-sided, hand-stamped affair, with no information given about the identity of the producer (or producers) involved. This cut retains the late night techno vibe of the original, but with percussion and whizzing electronic noises that recall classic tech-house from the likes of Swag, Rob Mello and David Duriez, rather than Berghain-friendly minimalism. The subtle, party-minded approach is confirmed by the use of cut-up vocal samples from Cuba Gooding Jr's "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend", which also featured on Nightmares On Wax's 1990 bleep techno anthem, "Aftermath".

Ijzeren Rots (hand-stamped 1-sided 12")
Cat: DIGWAH 03. Rel: 10 May 18
  1. Ijzeren Rots (8:32)
Review: Since launching in 2006, the men or women of mystery behind the sneaky Digwah series have delivered a couple of sought-after, single-sided 12" singles that blend familiar samples with rock solid tech-house grooves. Predictably, this third volume in the series sticks closely to the blueprint, wrapping twinkling electric piano motifs and a restless, looped bassline around a rhythm track rich in jazzy hi-hats, snappy drum machine snares and tough, locked-in kick-drums. It's arguably closer to deep house than its predecessors, with the tactile and warming samples - lifted, it seems, from the late '60s West Coast rock record - helping to create a rolling, late night feel. The previous Digwah releases sold out quickly, so you'll have to act fast to secure a copy of this one.

  3. Denis Horvat - "Guilty Pleasure" (8:11)
  4. Luke Brancaccio & Simon Berry - "Close Your Eyes" (vs John Digweed & Nick Muir) (6:29)
Review: Alongside Bedrock XX: a new compilation (and mix) of exclusive tunes celebrating the label's 20th anniversary, boss John Digweed also presents the tenth edition of his Live In series here - where he ventured to Tokyo's legendary Contact club earlier in 2018. This all nighter is one they'll still be talking about to years for come. There will be a limited edition vinyl pressing of a dozen or so of the 64 tracks featured in his complete mix (across three volumes) featuring the likes of Jimmy Van M, Pascal FEOS, Robert Babicz and many more. Part 1 features French hi-tech soul merchant Madben: whose adrenalised rendition of Molecule's "Sila" will propel you directly into the stratosphere, melodic techno expert Denis Horvat serves up "Guilty Pleasure" where the rising Danish star presents more of his highly engineered sonic futurism and label bosses John Digweed and Nick Muir appear also: with a sleek and brooding rework of Luke Brancaccio & Simon Berry's "Close Your Eyes".

  2. Rober Babicz - "Space Disco" (6:25)
  3. Luke Brancaccio & Simon Berry - "Close Your Eyes" (feat JJD) (7:48)
Review: Earlier in the year, Bedrock chief John Digweed headed to Tokyo for a set at Contact - one of the best underground clubs in the world. The basement club has a low ceiling, minimal lighting and an incredible sound system. The set (which featured a whopping 64 tracks) captures the legend's set from start to finish: from the deep/moody opening tracks, to the peak time bangers and everything in between. The tenth edition in his 'Live In' series is released on a limited vinyl run, with a select number of tracks on wax. Disc Two here features the hyper-melodic drift of Systematic's Marc Romboy on "Asteroids", the veteran artist formerly known as Rob Acid (Robert Babicz) with some powerful futurist soul on "Space Disco" and Luke Brancaccio & Simon Berry with some tripped-out tunnel vision on "Close Your Eyes" (feat JJD).

  3. Jimmy Van M & Juan Hansen - "Madin" (Gala dub) (8:00)
  4. Pascal FEOS - "Dual Structure" (7:01)
Review: On the 28th of April this year, legendary British DJ John Digweed performed at Tokyo clubbing institution Contact. The Bedrock head honcho's entire set has been captured on digital format, but those of you you lucky to snatch up these limited edition vinyl runs can have access to some of those exclusive tracks played as part of his amazing performance that special evening in Japan. The third and final disc features Brazilian veteran Renato Cohen, who makes a return to the scene with "Sauna" - this spacey nu-disco number is far cry from his legendary "Pontape" we can tell you that much. Scottish hypnotic techno expert Edit Select similarly makes a surprising addition with the typically ethereal "Above Ground" and finally something more typical of Digweed's programming courtesy of fellow progressive house legend Jimmy Van M (with Juan Hansen) on the euphoric epic "Madin" (Gala dub).

Can I Change My Mind? (1-sided 12")
Cat: BK 12X1202. Rel: 06 Dec 16
  1. Can I Change My Mind (13:22)
Review: Sometimes, a single side of vinyl is all you need. That's certainly the case here, as Where To Now regular Beatrice Dillon delivers her most impressive and mind-altering club cut yet. Across a mesmerizing 13-minutes, Dillon distills the essence of Minimal techno, dub, West African rhythms, early jungle and experimental noise into one, constantly evolving dancefloor burner. While the blazed vibe of dub, and the crackle of vintage vinyl are ever-present throughout, it's the subtle shifts in rhythmic emphasis - from 4/4 to breakbeat, via intricate polyrhythms - that make "Can I Change My Mind" such an alluring prospect. Few 13-minute tracks can captivate a dancefloor throughout, but this certainly can.

Iso Grifo (reissue) (140 gram vinyl 12" repress)
Cat: SL 5. Rel: 25 Jun 18
  1. Iso Grifo
  2. Lava
  3. Round
Review: In the field of minimal house reissues, this is a big deal. Perlon main man Dimbiman doesn't appear on wax often, but when he does he makes it count. This early release on Baby Ford's seminal Pal SL was originally out in 1998, when minimal house was a vague concept at best on the most outer reaches of dance music. "Iso Grifo" itself remains a masterclass of spine-chilling space and perfectly strange sonic matter, while "Lava" pushes the notion of reduction dance music to its absolute limit. "Round" is an even more immersive affair that hides many subtle layers within its seemingly simple construct. Quite simply groundbreaking stuff, and highly sought after so don't sleep on it.

Tanto Amor (12")
Cat: PNR 008. Rel: 07 Nov 17
  1. Tanto Amor (14:28)
  2. Wasame (13:28)
Review: After touching down on our charts with two great EPs back in 2014, Portugal's Diogo went silent on us...until now. The young producer returns with a stylish two-tracker for the Pluie / Noir label, that itself born in Portugal but now based in the heart of Berlin's techno scene. Diogo's music here, however, is a sparse and compelling affair, made possible on the A-side by the minimal glitches and bumps of "Tanto Amor" - as wavy as it is euphoric! On the flip, "Wasame" reminds us of Villalobos at his most poignant, and Diogo carries exactly the same sort of flair for crafting intricate beat cocktails, tightly packed together and filled to the brim with wild-eyed of sonics and samples.

  2. The Spirit (7:24)
Review: Elusive producer Disk has been busy of late, delivering two low-key - but also highly regarded - EPs in the last few months. This latest 12", which also appears via his Whiteloops imprint, boasts another two tried-and-tested dancefloor treats. First up is "High Hill", a bustling chunk of rolling dancefloor voodoo built around chunky deep house drums, flash-fried samples and fluttering tech-house flourishes. He takes a totally different approach on the B-side, paying tribute to the dreamy chords, loved-up breadowns and skittering breakbeats of early British hardcore productions. It sounds like 808 State's "Pacific" was a major influence, though the breaks on Disk's production boast a much funkier swagger.

Review: Disuasiv are the duo of Romanians in Milan Dragosh and Andi Parlogea, who have had previous releases on tastemaker labels such as Broquade, Memoria and Pointilisme Musique. Their new 'Project M' EP shows off their flair for energetic tech house with futuristic tendencies once again, for local imprint Curtea Veche. This release inaugurates their new limited series, but keeping in kind that the parent label has released top notch Eastern European artists such as Sepp and Herck: so you know you are in good hands. The rolling and hypnotic "Brother Loopy" is quality gear to rock the crowd at that peak moment, with its tough groove. It also gets an amazing remix on the flip by homeboy Cally, which takes it deeper into after hours territory: the sort of track you'd imagine Cezar dropping at 7 in the morning! The percussion driven title track is assisted by an equally powerful bass and airy pads - this will mix in well with your Sepp or Nu Zau records.

Calypso (1-sided 12")
Cat: DEGU 024. Rel: 21 Mar 18
  1. Calypso (6:23)
Review: A few years back, Ditongo - an alternative alias for Peru-based nu-disco producer Batongo - served up a quartet of tasty re-edit releases before heading back underground. Here he resurfaces with what we believe to be one of his strongest cut-jobs to date. Sure, there's only one track on offer, but it's an absolute beast. "Calypso" sees him playing around with a disco-era soca cut, brilliantly teasing out a punchy, extra-percussive rhythm track before unleashing elements of his steamy, Caribbean source material. There's a superb breakdown and build up midway through, too, which the producer uses to introduce a killer spoken word passage. In other words, it's a simple but brilliantly effective peak-time re-rub that's more than worthy of your hard-earned cash.

Review: Hailing from New Mexico and on a mission to uphold the principles of soulful house music, Plastik People offer up another fine selection of operators who understand the legacy laid down by the pioneers of true deepness. DJ Aakmael has been doing his thing on labels like Uzuri and his own UnXpozd Entertainment for a long time, and he's on perfect form on "Deeprespectrak" (with a little assistance on the mic as well). Lars Behrenroth meanwhile brings a drum heavy pressure to the otherwise smooth "Infection", and Mark Nicholas O lays down a sharp and nagging garage beat laden with jazzy licks.

  1. No Fooling (7:16)
  2. Between The Lines (7:00)
  3. Lost (4:59)
Review: Chicago legend DJ Jes has been releasing steadily since 1995 on legendary imprints such as Siesta, Afterhours and NRK, through to Karlovak and even his own Fresca Recordings imprint that ran from 2000 - 2003. This release follows up 2014's Closer To Freedom EP on Tardis: a label run by Eli Verveine and Oscar Schubaq that pursues the dubbier end of minimal house. It starts off in fine fashion with the funky and slightly discofied loops of "No Fooling"on the A side. On the flip, the title track "Between The Lines" is tough deep house with delay drenched keys and gritty SP1200 style beats while the deep tribalist groove of "Lost" is trippy afterhours style business. More great work from an underrated hero of the Windy City underground on offer here.

  2. Nices Wolkchen (Robag Bronky Frumu rehand)
Review: Pampa has called in the big guns for on this second installment of the DJ Koze Amygdala Remixes series, with Roman Flugel and Robag Wruhme providing two typically intoxicating revisions. Flugel steps up first, delivering a dreamy, lucid and melodic take on "Amygdala" built around restless cymbals and liquid house rhythms. While hardly tropical, the melodies and chords certainly doff a cap to classic 1980s new age recordings. Wruhme reworks "Nices Wolkchen", delivering a typically loose, atmospheric and engaging tech-house interpretation that seems to float from the speakers. It makes an already beautiful track almost implausibly wide-eyed.

  1. La Duquesa
  2. Burn With Me
Review: Amygdala, the forthcoming LP from DJ Koze holds the dual title of being one of this year's most keenly awaited long players as well as the album with the most bizarre cover art. Quite why the producer is riding a reindeer hasn't been made clear yet, but this two track 12" does clue us in to to the possibility the album will hold up to such high expectations. "La Duquesa" is one of the few tracks on Amygdala not to feature a collaborator and stripped bare of any outside distractions finds Koze on sublime form; equal parts tender, refined, casual, serious, deep and euphoric. When those strings hit is a joy to behold. In contrast "Burn With Me" is dark, druggy, delicious and decadent.
