Review: You wait three years for a new Arca album and then two come along at once. The Barcelona-based, Venezuelan artist has already dropped 'Kick I' and 'Kick II' on his standard XL stomping ground this month, and has now decided to remind us why we fell in love in the first place. &&&&&& is the producer's seminal debut album, and it still sounds fresh today.

Occupying a space somewhere between techno, the proto-footwork and juke popularised by the likes of Addison Groove at the turn of the last decade, IDM and ambient, it's a difficult thing to get your head around, from the strange piano discordance of 'Mother' to 'Feminine''s suggestion of intense 140s and the submerged liquid downtempo of 'Anaesthetic'. A seminal moment in recent dance history.

  7. I Scream - "Nothing To Do" (5:05)
  8. I Scream - "Take Your Headphones & Dance!" (2:42)
Review: A record entitled 'Insane 80s Tracks From The Insane Label' was never going to be boring. Talk about living up to the name, Insane Music means an experimental cassette label from Belgium, managed by Alain Neffe and founded in 1981. He makes music as I Scream, and to put that into wider context his two tracks on this vinyl excursion are harsh distortions with distant bumbling rhythms, and relentless rolls of acid warble and snares the likes of which techno would kill for. That's far from that, though. Pseudo Code present the most accessible stuff here, and that comes in the form of a twisted child of post punk and garage synth pop, veering from the wonderfully bouncy and danceable 'Waiting For Zorro', to the runaway anxiety of 'Jesus!'. Bene Gesserit goes for what David Lynch might do with disco and garage rock, while Human Flesh present a staggeringly effective cacophony of brass refrains.

Review: Russian has long been a world unto its own when it comes to electronic music. Often the sounds reflect what we think we know about the vast country and that is the case here on a blistering new 2 x 12" from Buttechno. "Xsaw" is a dense blizzard of white noise and buzz saw synths that gets you on edge. "The Big R" is fun of suspense and paranoia and "Sirenius" is mysterious synth melodies with arresting blasts of dystopian noise. There are plenty of other haunting and unsettling soundtracks, art noise sketches and bleak moments of musical cinema that are brilliantly beguiling.

  6. 0Sns.b2 (4:02)
Review: D. Tiffany's xpq? is rightly regarded as fertile breeding ground for electronic experimentations and Critical Amnesia's self-titled ode to weird and wonderful noises is certainly no exception. At times frantic, in other moments deeply atmospheric, it's hard to say whether it's primarily made with dancefloors or headphones in mind, the chaotic rhythms that lock you in only fully evident at heightened volume, but the bigger picture really becoming clear in less intense listening situations. '0Dsn2' represents the smoked out end of the spectrum, with its laidback broken beats and fizzing distortion. '0Sns.b1' offers full body contortion-worthy EBM pleasures, and '0Dsn1' brings more than a hint of amen rave to the table. Intelligent and wildly adventurous, nevertheless it's also built in such a way that delivers the simple satisfaction of 'proper' dance music.

  1. Muse (1:29)
  2. Solo (4:05)
  3. Dew (3:28)
  4. Cherry (4:44)
Review: Detroit's Jay Daniel can no longer be referred to as a protegee. The Watusi High boss is very much a talent unto his own after forming a small but superb discography in the last few years. His latest outing is another exquisite mixture of his very real drum playing skills and an ability to coax real feeling out of his lush synths. After the ambiance of 'Muse,' 'Solo' sinks into a late night vibe with glowing pads and wooden hits making for a perfectly reflective mood. 'Dew' cuts more loose into ticketing drum work that is raw and off-grid, but again soften but those gaze-inducing pads, and 'Cherry' closes out with crunchy, dance floor ready grooves.

Review: The wonderfully named Django the Bastard is behind the production on this retro-future package from Dorothy's Fortress on Burning Witches. It's a real melting pot of sounds from electro to Italo, synth to lo-fi. It's sleazy yet dazzling, dark but uplifting and was first put out more than 10 years ago and hammered by The Chemical Brothers. The flip is a fat bit of analogue grooving with trippy arps and frazzled bass. This group has had underground cult status for a while but are now back making new beats, and we're certainly pleased about that.

Review: The latest drop on the consistently brilliant Kimochi comes from Eho Kates, a new project from Todd Gys and Brendon Moeller. While the names involved may be familiar, the resulting sound is something wholly fresh. Certainly, Moeller's rightly heralded instinct for dubwise processes is no great shock, but there's a playful sense of experimentation powering every element of this release from the scuffed, fractured rhythms of 'Anxiety Sensitivity' to the submerged echo chamber surrealism of 'Emotional Distress Endurance'. Inquisitive processes and otherworldly sound design shape out the whole record, shot through with the alluring mystery that defines Kimochi output overall.

  1. Necrosis En La Poya (4:07)
  2. PIE (Paedophile Information Exchange) (0:51)
  3. Negros Hambrientos (3:34)
Review: Esplendor GeomEtrico was a pioneer in the noise world and this record is one of his most edgy and advanced works of all. It is noisy, gauzy, confrontational and frankly weird for the way it mangles synths, layers up distortion and contorts vocals into dark apparitions and paranoid sound worlds. This is the first and only legitimate reissue of the record which was initially only pressed in very small quantities after an enigmatic fan decided to help out and stump up the funds. The artwork is as iconic and disturbing as the music itself and the DIY, experimental nature of the music still arrests your attention all these years later.

Review: True to their usual form, Krachladen Records serve ups big release that is split between Dusseldorf IDM masters Graph aka Stefan Jurke & Jens Beyer and A Rocket In Dub. This is the first in what is promised to be a new series that pops up a few times a year. Graph's 'Gowc Gowac' is a deadly dub with plenty of sci-fi motifs that help add to a feeling of revelation despite the heavy bass. 'Kon Konwac' is all whirring sounds, clacking hits and looped sonic freakiness that keeps you guessing. The three cuts from A Rocket In Dub all offer atmospheric dub with otherworldly found sounds that have you gazing on in awe.

Review: If this is your first run in with New York's Ike Yard then Factory Records might be a good place to start - these guys were the first US act to sign with the iconic but doomed Manchester label back in the day, and that says a lot about what to expect from their output. This was their first EP, released in 1981, making their proto-post punk and no wave trappings all the more groundbreaking.

The five tracks still stand up today, and certainly compare with some of the era and canon's definitive names. It would be unfair to say you can hear A Certain Ratio, Joy Division or Section 25 here, though, as Ike Yard were doing this at roughly same time to those UK counterparts, so it's less about mimicry and more a sign of just how necessary noises like this were back then.

  2. Grey Skies (i) (5:11)
Review: Lo Kindre's work in and around the Scottish scene has been exemplary thus far, and he returns to the Phase Group label he runs with Mr TC for a full-length EP that continues his trend of omnivorous electronics without too much regard for generic boundaries. "Dusk" is an expansive slab of melancholy electronica with nods to minimal wave and proto-trance, which isn't especially in line with his earlier works. "Grey Skies (i)" features similar synth voices, but comes on more like an ominous Giallo soundtrack off-cut in dub, which is a wonderful thing of course.

Review: In case you somehow missed it. Leo Generator is the new alias from Calvin Harris. It's a project he has said was inspired by underground artist Paul Woolford's Special Request moniker - a place Woolford cut loose and served up a dizzying array of old school sounds but with a modern twist. On this new one, The Internet's Steve Lacy features and the results are soaring, powerful vocal dance music for festival main stages and mainstream radio play. Mark Broom offers a more soulful and throwback house version, Solardo bring the acid on their remix and MK layers in some of his trademark New York drums and dubby undercurrents.

Review: In a bid to make the first release on their freshly minted Philoxenia label stand out, Neu Verboten and Luigi Di Venere have turned to the invaluable experience of Steve Marie, a Paris-based Corsican producer known for his heady blends of techno, EBM and trance. It's a smart move, because Ho! hits home hard from the word go. Marie first offers some retro-futurist flavour in the shape of the bass-heavy, 1990 bleep and breaks style weight of the acid-flecked title track, before combining his EBM and neo-trance fascinations on the chiming and creepy 'Devil Inside'. He retains the deep bass and razor-sharp TB-303 motifs on laidback and angular electro number 'Romanee Conti', before puffing his chest out on trance-inducing, faintly foreboding late-night throb-job 'Trancia'.

Review: Heavy on concept and conceptualism, Muller takes the idea of a 'noise' record to new heights with these two pieces of needle-crackling needle crackles, analogue fizzes and mechanical whirs, all of which will sound familiar to anyone who has ever left the vinyl spinning and volume up after the track finishes.

Remarkably using these elements to form a strong of rudimentary rhythms that don't so much veer as jump between tempos, the results may not be for everyone but that was clearly never the intention. A convincing argument for the potential and usefulness of what you might call 'found sounds' - recognisable because they are so commonplace, they hide a musicality that makes you realise there are harmonies, melodies and time signatures everywhere if we keep our ears open and listen close enough.
