NYX Tape
NYX Tape (12" + insert)
Cat: DE 191. Rel: 07 Dec 17
  1. Red Axes - "5 Min" (feat CAR) (4:22)
  2. Red Axes - "NYX Tape" (feat Gina X) (6:47)
  3. Solid Space - "Destination Moon" (Red Axes edit) (5:37)
  4. X Ray Pop - "La Machine A Rever" (Red Axes edit) (5:08)
Review: There's much to admire on this latest 12" excursion from hard-working Israeli duo Red Axes. On the A-side you'll find two brand new collaborations, the most notable of which is "NYX Tape" - a clandestine, mind-altering chunk of minimal wave drug-chug featuring the distinctive spoken word vocals of original no wave star Gina X (she of "No GDM" fame). Chloe Raunet AKA C.A.R lends her similarly stylish spoken word vocals to the EP's other original production, the acid-fired electro filthiness that is "5 Min". On the flipside you'll find two tasty re-edits of tracks from the Dark Entries catalogue: a dub-tinged, dancefloor-friendly take on Solid Moon's spacey "Destination Moon" and a rolling, club-ready tweak of X-Ray Pop's quirky electronic bubbler "La Machine a Rever".

  1. Tekline (5:59)
  2. Tekline (Addison Groove remix) (4:31)
  3. Linetek (7:35)
  4. 0121 (4:29)
Review: German label Ecke Records returns with its fourth release, following up some great EPs by the likes of Squallfront and Data Room. This one comes courtesy of Xantrax, who first appeared on the label's inaugural various artists compilation - and he certainly ain't messing around here. The Marseille-based artist is clearly influenced by UK bass, as exemplified on the down and dirty off-kilter rumble of "Tekline". He doubles down on that one, inviting a true legend of the scene on board: Addison Groove gives us a real trippy electro-bass rendition, delivered in his idiosyncratic style as always. Followed flip by the steely, street-level stepper "Linetek" and the intricate hypnotising riddims of "0121" on the flip.

  3. Don't Trust No One (2:26)
  4. Just The Two Of You (4:33)
  5. It's Your Uncle For Gods Sake (4:22)
  6. Yo Bitch Needs Them Hits (2:56)
Review: The Poverty Is Violence stable are firmly established now as an essential conductor for rabid, rowdy and downright rasping mechanics from subterranean operators of all shapes and sizes. Anonymous but reportedly veteran Dutch producer XXX previously appeared on the label in 2016 with the wild Noorder Scannen 12", and now returns with a bludgeoning new release. There's a consistent metal grind to the percussion on Westzaan Doelen, while the synth tones in between tend towards the jagged and abrasive, there's space and poise in the arrangement to lift this out of knuckleheaded noise. "Don't Go After Her" reverberates with clamouring intensity while the beefy chassis of "Just The Two Of You" shimmers under an acidic glaze - this is full-tilt deviant music executed with finesse to match the grime.

Subsequent Pleasures
Cat: DE 072. Rel: 16 Jul 14
  1. Going Around
  2. Moscovite Musquito
  3. Strange 9 To 9
  4. Call It Weird
  5. Abysmal Thoughts
Review: The original pressing of Subsequent Pleasures, the self-financed and ludicrously limited debut EP from Dutch darkwave pioneers Xymox (later to rename themselves Clan of Xymox), is notoriously hard to get hold of. Props, then, to reissue specialists Dark Entries for making it available again on vinyl for the first time since 1983. While this version doesn't include all of the tracks featured on the original, it does contain all the killers, including the electro-goth wooziness of "Going Around", the Joy Division-ish "Strange 9 To 9" and the superb synth workout "Call It Weird". It's one of those releases that should be an essential purchase for anyone with even the remotest interest in darkwave.

  4. Mamazu - "Blueprint" (6:51)
  5. Fortunato - "Sharihotsu" (4:36)
  6. DJ Bowlcut - "Dream Valley" (6:19)
Review: Another special delivery direct from South Korea's burgeoning experimental electronic scene, courtesy of Tonal Unity, six track here take leads from downtempo, ambient, found sounds, field recordings and lo-fi slo-mo dance, making for a broad release that's true coherency is found in the quality of its tracks.

So while 'Bamboo Haze' feels born in the sticky heat of South East Asia, creating sweaty, mystical moods, 'Should Be There' shares more in common with percussive outsiders like Harmonious Thelonious, with a drop of How To Dress Well's alt-R&B also in there. Mamazu's 'Blueprint' layers Arabesque sounds atop one hell of a hook-y rhythm and beat section, whereas 'Flow' is late night nu-jazz blues for smoky, candlelit after hours soirees. All great, and seemingly all here to make sure you never get bored.

Review: After the expansive run of eXquisite CORpsE EPs on Platform 23 last year, Robbert Heijnen and Debbie Jones' project gets another fresh airing under the XqST guise. The seductive rhythmic incantations gathered on this release were largely recorded in 2003 in Vancouver, once the couple's children were in bed. Quite what the junior XqSTers would have made of the transcendental drum loops emanating from their parents' studio is anyone's guess, but the quality is remarkable. Dense and foggy in atmosphere, but with a sharply defined percussive angle at every cycle of every loop, this is another wonderful document of the often overlooked work of this singular pair of drum obsessives.

Review: Having previously released on such admired underground imprints as Ghostly International and Weird Records, it would be fair to say that Brooklyn duo Xeno & Oaklander has a quietly impressive track record. "Hypnos" is their fifth album to date, and the first since they signed with Dais Records late last year. As usual, the eight tracks on offer draw huge amounts of inspiration from early '80s cold wave and the weirder end of new wave, with occasional forays into more industrial-tinged and proto-electronica style pastures. Throughout, Liz Wendelbo's vocals provide a weary, stylish and occasionally standoffish focal point around which the synthesizers and drum machines merrily whirr and pop.

Review: Synthesizer and drum machine obsessive Xosar (AKA producer Sheela Rahman) has enjoyed a productive few years, building a formidable reputation via releases on Rush Hour, L.I.E.S and Creme Organization. Here she delivers her first full-length for Opal Tapes' occasional vinyl offshoot, Black Opal. It's perhaps a little less colourful and synthesizer-heavy than previous excursions, instead focusing on dark, fuzzy, heavily percussive takes on acid house and techno. Of course, there are curious interludes - see the wonky industrial IDM of "Prophylaxis" and the beatless synth madness of "Gnome Circle" - but it's the more floor-friendly excursions (and most profoundly the bleak and intense "Hades Gates") that really stand out.

  1. Black Monk In The Dunes (19:49)
  2. Echoes Of Time (19:46)
Review: Russian synth maestro Vladimir Karpov is known for deeply atmospheric and somewhat transformative work that's steeped in mood and colour. Sometimes his compositions make us feel elated, at other times inspired, like a eureka moment has just occurred. Then there are the arrangements that invoke more introverted thoughts, ideas of isolation if not desolation.

The concept of stepping into another reality as rendered by deep, meditative scores is certainly evident again here, but this is probably the producer's deepest and most meditative. Comprising of just two tracks, but with each running close to 20-minutes in length, there's a distinct sonic journey happening in both 'Black Monk In The Dunes' and 'Echoes Of Time'. Subtle developments and intricate changes take place, if you listen beneath the immediate ambient refrains and drones. A classy and accomplished gentle ear worm.
