Review: In honour of its 20th Anniversary, Yep Roc Records reissues Josh Rouse's 2003 album, 1972. This is the best-selling album in the folk pop singer-songwriter's catalog - not surprising, considering it contains some of his most well-loved and honest songs, many of which have become standards in his live set-list. 1972 is a collection of songs that pay homage to the songwriters whose songs were popular on AM radio in the year Josh was born. Fluttering strings, handclaps, flutes and the production of Brad Jones provide the right atmosphere for this indelible selection. Highlights include the singles 'Love Vibration', 'James' and 'Rise'.

Review: Full Time Men are a lesser spotted curio of New York's indie rock scene in the late 80s, mainly known for their 1988 album Your Face My Fist. As much as that title might make them sound like a hardcore punk outfit, they carried a strong melodic sensibility to their spiky rock and new wave which is celebrated on this retrospective compilation. Part Time Job shows how varied the band were in their heyday, drawing on rock n' roll and blues as much as power pop or noise rock, and that carries through to the newer tracks which make their first appearance on this collection.

Review: Album number six from the Ruffians certainly means business. Honest and painfully on-point in terms of overarching themes, its sonically highly polished and - while not a concept record - incredibly well conceived as a coherent whole. A rock 'n' roll offering that grabs your body to make it move while boring into your mind and soul to make you think and feel. Word on the street is this was some three years in the making, and it certainly feels like an un-rushed process will have led to this package. Tracks kick and punch in all the right places, but they never forget the need for balance, peaks and troughs. It's more than likely that you'll walk away from this with the scale of the anthems cemented to the mind, though, rather than the more tender moments. After all, it's a masterclass in major key melodies, and a striking example of the powerful effect those have on listeners.
