Review: The complete soundtrack of cult French animated TV series Les Shadoks by Robert Cohen-Solal, available for the first time ever in its entirety. Right in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jacques Rouxel and Rene Borg's legendary television cartoon. Cut and mastered from the original reels under the supervision of the artist. Electro-acoustic pioneer and eminent member of the illustrious Groupe de recherches musicales (the French equivalent of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop), Robert Cohen-Solal has explored music and sound alongside luminaries such as Bernard Parmegiani, Pierre Henry, Luc Ferrari and Iannis Xenakis and is responsible for numerous projects in applied music, soundtracks and experimental recordings. A fascinating and bizarre collage of wacky electro pop, drones, musique concrete, classical and dadaist sound experiments seamlessly mixing into a cohesive and cinematic listening experience. A true literary, cultural and philosophical phenomenon in France, Les Shadoks caused a sensation while airing between 1968 and 1974 and the ideal soundtrack for what is considered one of the weirdest animated TV series ever created.

Review: Back in the mid 1980s, Jun Fukamachi decided to establish his own label, Nicole. It didn't last very long. In fact, the imprint only ever put out one record: a promo-only collection of untitled instrumentals called '86 Spring & Summer Collection: Instrumental Images. Here, that hard-to-find set gets the reissue treatment for the first time. Heavily influenced by mid-1980s film and TV soundtracks, contemporaneous new age ambient and expressive experimental jazz, the synthesizer and drum machine heavy collection sounds like it was designed to showcase Fukamachi's library music credentials. Crucially, though, it contains some superb, life-affirming compositions that should thrill those who have been enjoying the previous reissues of both WRWTFWW and Holland's Music From Memory.

Review: With a new big budget Hollywood movie based on classic Manga series Ghost in the Shell now opening across Europe, now seems as good a time as any to revisit the soundtrack to the 1995 movie of the same name. Composed and largely performed by acclaimed Japanese composer Kenji Kawaii, the film's music was arguably more inspired than the movie itself. Utilizing a blend of electronic hardware, traditional Japanese percussion instruments and snatches of exotic vocals, Kawaii's ambient compositions are variously beautiful, beguiling and uncomfortably moody. There are some more cinematic moments, too, but even these rely on atmospheric electronics as much as choral motifs.

Review: Having previously served up new editions of a number of Midori Takada's solo albums, Swiss reissue specialists WRWTFWW have now turned their attention to her earlier work as part of the Mkwaju Ensemble. Ki-Motion originally appeared on legendary Japanese imprint Better Days way back in 1981, and saw the trio lay down a range of wonderfully breezy, melodious and life-affirming tracks that joined the dots between Glass and Reich style American minimalism, Berlin school ambient, Japanese new age bliss and gentle, proto-type electronica. It's perhaps not as rare or sought-after as some Takada-related releases, but it's still a delightful album: a melodious and sun-kissed affair that sparkles just as much as her sublime solo works.

Review: More commonly known for a more exotic, wild funk soundtrack, Georges 'Nino Nardini' Teperino was way ahead of his time throughout all of his work, but Musique Pour Le Futur pitched him centuries ahead. Originally composed in 1970 for library label Neuilly, the LP takes us to galaxies unknown on rockets charged by Moogs and old tape machines. Loopy, often schizophrenic, dripping in found sounds and ideas that are still pretty daring almost 50 years later, this is Nino at his most far-out. Which is saying something.

Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Midori Takada is a composer, multi-percussionist and theater performer from Japan. She performs solo on marimba and other percussive instruments and has released two solo albums, in particular Through The Looking Glass - which originally released in 1983 and gets a much needed remaster here by WeRelease/MusiquePourLaDanse/MentalGroove. Takada's renewed success is a true product of our times: her music was 'discovered' via YouTube's algorithm a few years back which amassed millions of views and created a new generation of fans enamoured by her amazing work. In the wake of the YouTube video's popularity, she has toured Europe multiple times and other albums by her have also since been reissued in the last year.

Review: Earlier in the year, WRWTFWW and Palto Flats both reissued Japanese percussionist Midori Takada's brilliant 1983 debut album, Through The Looking Glass. Now WRWTFWW has gone a step further, releasing another hard-to-find touchstone of Japanese ambient: Takada's 1990 collaboration with jazz pianist Masahiko Satoh, Lunar Cruise. It's another sublime set, all told, with Takada's impeccable percussion work - both jazz-style free drumming and more melodious instruments such as marimba, kalimba and xylophone - being complemented by Satah's slick and atmospheric synthesziers. It's perhaps a little more challenging in places than Through The Looking Glass - some tracks are dense and tribal in tone, or unashamedly experimental - but rarely less than wonderfully atmospheric.

Review: We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records is a label founded and curated by Oliver Mental Groove of Mental Groove Records and Stephane Armleder aka The Genevan Heathen of Villa Magica Records. This is the label's seventeenth release in only a mere three years of operation and they've brought us a bunch of much needed re-issues of work by the likes of Bernard Parmegiani, John Carpenter and Michel le Grand. Here we have the original soundtrack of Amer, a 2009 Belgian-French horror film written and directed by French directors Helene Cattet and Bruno Forzani. There are contributions from some of the greatest Italian composers such as Stelvio Cipriani, Bruno Nicolai and the possibly the best of them all: Ennio Morricone. As a bonus there are eight "thrilling, frightening and suspenseful infinite loops" taken from the movie's original sound effects library.
