Review: Chancha Via Circuito, AKA Argentine producer Pedro Canale, has a reputation for doing things differently. This often manifests itself in eccentric but thrillingly forward-thinking productions that join the dots between traditional South American rhythms and instrumentation, dub, hip-hop and contemporary bass music. On his latest full-length adventure - his first for nearly three years - Canale pushes the envelope further, serving up a mixture of breezy, sun-kissed takes on traditional Colombian tropes, dusty, bass-heavy hip-hop instrumentals, mind-altering South American electronica, hazy ambient interludes and life-affirming tropical pop. The result is a joyful and vibrant set that could be the producer's strongest work to date.

Review: Matanza member Rodrigo Gallardo has long been interested in the "folkloric traditions" of South America .....El Origen is his attempt to incorporate these traditional sounds, rhythms and instrumental tropes into a contemporary electronic music setting. His original productions - all fluttering flutes, gentle acoustic guitars, warm electronics and evocative vocals - are showcased on the A side, with pal and fellow Chilean Nicola Cruz providing his own interpretations on the B-side. Naturally, his revisions tend towards the more cosmic and dancefloor-friendly, but also retain enough elements from Gallardo's original tracks to not be too revolutionary. Crucially, all Cruz's versions are superb.

  4. Alkoan Kulu Bidoor (iZem remix) (5:57)
Review: Both Nickodemus and the Wonderwheel imprint are from NYC, and both parties know how to lay down some pure, hypnotic goodness when it comes to house. This time, the former is joined by Alsarah, who provides the mystical, charming Eastern vocals over the deep, progressive beats of "The Crow", a vibrant house tune for the big room; Saangan does his best to inject a little more techno sensibility into the tune. On the flip, "Alkoan Kulu Bidoor" heads into broken beat territories with its slower, sloppier beats, once again guided by Alsarah's arabic spoken word, and iZem provides the 'umph' by layering a rolling, glitchy blend of percussion into the mix. Solid.

Review: Hearty congratulations to legendary NYC event Turntables on the Hudson, which recently celebrated 20 years of good grooves, eclectic selections and even better parties. Here founders and residents DJs Nickodemus and Mariano continue the celebrations with a triple-vinyl set showcasing some of the tracks that have rocked their parties over the years. It's naturally pretty varied, flitting between skanking neo-reggae-soul (Fat Freddy's Drop), vibrant Latin beats (Truby Tio, Joe Claussell), tropical treats (Quantic and Nickodemus, Palov & A Angelides), broken beat (Jazzanova remixing Men From The Nile), dubbed-out afro-house (SUMO tweaking Lonesome Echo Production), and techno-tempo jazz house (Zero DB's killer "Come Party"). Oh, and an awesome New Orleans brass band cover of Inner City's "Good Life", which is insanely good.
