Review: Fresh from her LP with leftfield French beatsmith Debruit, Alsarah joins The Nubatones for an equally unique lesson in timeless funk. Munching through cultures and continents with alluring grace, the fusion of eastern and western sounds here is instantly captivating and wholly of its own. From the bluesy guitar slaps of "Nuba Noutou" and "Yanas Baridou" to the lolloping ghostliness and poignant harmonies of "Bilad Aldahb" via the heartfelt croons and gentle accordion squeezes of "Wad Alnuba", this is an exceptional listening experience. Highly recommended.

Review: &Chakib is the debut album from Swiss Producer, DJ, and live-act Dominik Traub, also known as Dandara. Infusing influences from Africa, Asia, and Latin America with European techno and house, Dominik's signature sound shines through. The album's inception came after a fateful encounter with Algerian vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Chakib Bouzidi at a festival in Basel. Despite Chakib's untimely passing, Dominik continued the project, honouring his memory by completing the work. Infused with Chakib's voice notes and collaborative recordings, the album serves as a heartfelt tribute and through resilient collaboration and creative influence it emerges as a fine collection of globally influenced dance music.

Turntables On Ipanema

DJ G - "Samba Da Terra" (6:13)
Simbad - "Detroit De Janeiro" (3:28)
Nickodemus & Simbad - "BerlimBOOM" (4:57)
Zeb - "Space Forest" (4:26)
Review: Brooklyn's Wonderwheel is kind of like an institution by now; a label which has been delivering high levels of quality since the early 00s, and who is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. In fact, the imprint has only managed to develop and nurture their tribalistic style of the years, and it's fair to say that they have successfully managed to create a Wonderwheel 'sound'; heavy, club-friendly deep house with subtle Afro nuances. This new EP, Turntables On Ipanema, is a collaborative effort by a series of familiar names: DJ G's wonderfully tropical house ballad "Samba De Terra" leads the 12", and is followed by Simbad's darker, more broken house groove called "Detroit De Janeiro", a perfect blurring of the sounds of the two American cities. Over on the B-side, "BerimBOOM" by Nickodemus and Simbad is a warm, beat-heavy deep house tune, and Zeb's "Space Forest" winds the tempo down to a sweet, mid-paced groove with magnificently dubby harmonies, and a balearic kinda feel.

Bass
Bognya (Clap! Clap! remix) (4:00)
Lenke (Nikitch remix) (3:49)
Review: Since that killer LP that dropped in 2015, the self-titled Khalal & Baba album, the two Wonderwheel Recordings producers have been up there with the very best in the leftfield Afro scene. Like-minded artists include the Principe mandem from Lisbon, who are also experimenting with house and Creole flavours, but these two are seriously carving their own niche with this spectacularly loose and imperceptible shade of dance music. Wonderwheel has become a veritable emporium of new and exciting strains of music, and we're proud to say that we've seen this coming since the very beginning. This new EP is an absolute bruiser, with the opening Clap! Clap! remix of "Bognya" sounding particularly alluring to us given our British heritage - what starts off as a fast-paced bass-weighted house hybrid quickly transforms into one of the wildest, most daring explosion of jungle breaks that we've heard in a long time. On the flip, the Nikitch version of "Lenke" is future tribalism at its finest, combining the duo's lust of breaks with this remixer's more two-step style. All in all, this is what you'd call a tip!

Review: Earthtones have got a new albumin the way and this is the very first and very tasty teaser single from it. This one is actually a collaboration with longtime friend and co-producer Oliwa and it has a stunning lead vocal that is full pf passion and heart ache and comes from Colombian-Canadian talent Lido Pimienta. The drums are slow, heavy and cumbia influenced extra bass synths, keys, guitars and drums all making it feel contemporary as well as traditional. We're told "the vision of this track is one of upliftment of womxn and femmes everywhere."

Review: New York City based Wonderwheel are excited to release the debut album by El Buho. UK born Robin Perkins is now based in Paris but spent the last two years living in Mexico City where he's working, playing and producing music. The Balance LP represents a meeting of different currents that make up Perkins' music: a fascination with the natural world (and its protection), with the rhythms/traditions of Latin America (Cumbia, Son Jarocho, Andean) and with modern electronic music and production aesthetics. Mixed with this is his idea of 'nature music' by using field recordings alongside synthesized sounds, Balance is also an album that celebrates community and collaboration; showcasing collaborations with 10 different artists from Latin America and beyond: producers, instrumentalists and singers. The message that sits behind this music is to value on the one hand the power of community, of collaboration and of our modern/globally connected world - but also the remembrance, protection and celebration of the very earth we depend upon for our existence.

Review: Following El Buho's "Tributaries" remix album, Wonderwheel offer up this choice 7" featuring two distinct cuts not found on the main record. First up is El Buho's take on grand master Quantic, working with the storied producer's considerable knowledge of Latin music to create a remix of "Cumbia Sobre El Mar" already well loved on globally minded dancefloors. On the flip comes the never before released El Buho version of Nickodemus and Femina's "Inmortales" - a fierce, drum-tastic version to get bodies shaking down.

Review: Over the last few years, El Buho has become one of Wonderwheel's most reliable artists. "Ramas", a collaborative set that sees him join forces with like-minded producers and musicians from around the world, sees him return to Nickodemus' imprint with his first studio album for two years. In keeping with much of his catalogue, the collective collaborative tracks fuse a mixture of downtempo grooves, Latin beats and tropical rhythms with folksy instrumentation, picturesque vocals, humid electronics and subtle nods to a myriad of interconnected downtempo styles. The results are largely hugely enjoyable, with our favourites including the dubby Afro-Cuban shuffle of "Cancuban" (with M Rux), the gorgeously wide-eyed and sun-soaked Baiuca hook-up "A Minha Fraga" and the soft-focus shuffle of "Kuuma" (with QOSQI).

Nights Of Balaur
Under The Volcano (Jose Marquez remix)
Review: Nickodemus is the New York based DJ/Producer/Party & club promoter for Turntables On The Hudson and has been releasing records for well over a decade. This three track sampler are tracks taken from his forthcoming album Moon People and proceedings commence with ''Under The Volcano'' a collaboration with latin electro outfit Naveganto which is based around a melancholic electronic groove with elements of Cumbian accordion in the mix for a late night excursion. ''Nights Of Balaur'' follows, sporting pulsating sub bass and Arabic sounding percussion, whilst LA based DJ and producer Jose Marquez completes the release with a remix of ''Under The Volcano.'' Well established on the deep house scene for his ''Inspiration'' party and brought up on a on a stable diet of Latin and world music , Jose adds more thump to the bump of the original version adding additional western Asian instrumentation into the affair whilst upping the ante on the bpm ever so slightly.

In My House (feat Lisa Shaw, Carol C & BAM - Art Of Tones Deep dub mix) (6:14)
Review: Nickodemus has always enjoyed skipping between musical styles, with previous releases touching on everything from hip-hop and Latin beats to reggae, ska, jazz and broken beat. This time round, he's decided to turn his hand to good, old-fashioned house music. "In My House", featuring the distinctive vocals of former Naked Music chanteuse Lisa Shaw, is a loose but driving number, where fuzzy, low-slung guitars and clipped electric bass notes are smothered in tech-house electronics and warehouse-friendly stabs. Art of Tones provides the flipside remixes, delivering a heavily electronic deep house Remix before serving up a deeper and dreamier Dub version that makes great use of Shaw's freestyle vocalizing. The EP's bonus cut, loose jazz-house shuffler "Funk That", may be the best of the lot.

Review: Nickodemus' 2005 debut album Endangered Species makes it not to vinyl for the first time ever here thanks to Wonderwheel Recordings. The album is rooted in the New York hip hop sound of 2005 with plenty of mad turntable skills of the sort that the DJ would showcase at parties on the Hudson. The music serves as a great snapshot of what was going on in the scnee back then, 16 years ago, and features a big list of great guests including the likes of Jay Rodriguez and Jonathan Maron of the Groove Collective, plus Carol C of Si Se, Will Holland aka Quantic) and Stimulus of The Real Live Show amongst many more.

Review: "Back From Africa" is the third 12" from the fine "Endangered Species" full length album by Nickodemus. The A-side gives us the two album mixes of "Back From Africa" & "Peace Pipe". Review: "Funky In The Middle" is a midtempo groove that features Jay Rogriguez of the Groove Collective on sax & Victor Axelrod of Antibalas on clavinet. The remix by Haaksman & Haaksman drops into a steady reggae stepper groove & deepens it a notch. On the flipside, the critic's choice cut on the album, "Crazy Stranger," takes us on a 125 BPM trip from the Blakans to Jerusalem and beyond. Featured musician, Harel Shachal of the group Anistar brings in textures of Turkish flute, sax & melodica while Tortured Soul's Ethan White on the keys locks into the heavy rhythms.

Review: "Give the Drummer Some" is the second 12" from the fine "Endangered Species" full length album by Nickodemus. It features the vocal stylings of Dionysos & Stimulus of the underground NYC group Real Live Show & the one & only Nappy G on percussion. Real Live Show has been tearing up the live hip hop scene in NYC for the past 2 years with raw, undiluted rhymes. Nappy G was the percussive backbone of Giant Step, the Repercussions & Groove Collective for many years & is currently the third member of Turntables On The Hudson for the past 7 years. This collaboration of beats rhymes & percussion make this a positive jem for both the radio & dancefloors. On the flipside, we have the funky Fort Knox 5 out of Washington DC with another heavy dancefloor remix. Also included on this 12" is the deep Balkan, middle eastern, hip hop instrumental called "Global Village". Global Village is an extension of the classic Nickodemus style of beats like "Cleopatra In New York" & "Desert Dancer".

Review: Both Nickodemus and the Wonderwheel imprint are from NYC, and both parties know how to lay down some pure, hypnotic goodness when it comes to house. This time, the former is joined by Alsarah, who provides the mystical, charming Eastern vocals over the deep, progressive beats of "The Crow", a vibrant house tune for the big room; Saangan does his best to inject a little more techno sensibility into the tune. On the flip, "Alkoan Kulu Bidoor" heads into broken beat territories with its slower, sloppier beats, once again guided by Alsarah's arabic spoken word, and iZem provides the 'umph' by layering a rolling, glitchy blend of percussion into the mix. Solid.

Review: Given their breezy, sunshine-friendly sound, it's something of a surprise that Brooklyn funk three-piece The Pimps of Joytime have yet to become a hit on the British festival circuit. Certainly fans of the breezy funk and soul offered by the likes of Breakestra, Quantic Soul Orchestra and the Baker Brothers will find plenty to enjoy on Janxta Funk, their second studio full-length. Yet, strangely, the Pimps aren't really like any of those acts. As the album shows, they draw on a myriad of influences, from the flash-fried funk-rock of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and smooth jazz-funk of Roy Ayers (who makes a guest appearance) to sweet soul, Puerto Rican rhythms and Brazilian sambas.

Now he's back with a fifth album, Animamundi, which finds him working alongside musicians such as Adil Smaali, Mambe Rodriguez and Carmen Estevez to whip up an adventurous trip through Eastern sounds. Review: Thornato delivers the goods wherever he lands, but this latest EP for Wonderwheel might well be the so-called tipping point. Much like some of Jah Wobble's odder works, "Chapinero" mixes far-Eastern melodies with a blend of fresh, contemporary beats, and the same goes for the gentler, more vocal-led sing-song that is "Koz Kazah". On the flip, "Deux A Deux" features Kongo Elektro and the sounds turn more African thanks to a tropical twist of flutes, leaving "Tera Deewana" to deliver the spiritual chanting from the desert lands....

Wonderwheel now reissues it on limited translucent blue vinyl which is as mesmerising as the fusion of global rhythms and electronic beats contained within. From the infectious opening and worldly grooves of 'Bennu' to the darker vocals and heavier drums of 'Rhinoceros', each track showcases Thornato's mastery of blending traditional instrumentation with modern production techniques. Standout cuts like 'Shu Swamp' seamlessly weave together influences from around the world with claps, xylophones, chanting vocals and shuffling rhythms that exude vibrant energy. A truly global blend of bass and beats this album will bring plenty of warmth into your life.

Review: If you were judging this record's contents by the vibrant painting of waves splashing against dark-brown sand dunes that adorns the cover, you'd expect it be a deliciously Balearic and sun-kissed affair. To an extent, it is, though producer Yeahman's primary concern seems to be percussion. The vast majority of the tracks on Ostriconi, the artist's debut album, boast rhythms and drum patterns - both organic and machine-made - that doff a cap to African, South American and Caribbean musical culture. Layer on top of this electronic and acoustic instrumentation sounds drawn from all over the world (think Sitars, Flamenco guitars and so on), as well as nods towards nu-disco, deep house and dub techno, and you have a hugely entertaining set that sidesteps convention without losing any of its accessibility.

After moving to NYC, Zeb helped start the great party Organic Grooves. "Stop the Earth, I Want to Get Off!" is a superb album that spans the world in eastern dub and folk, bossa, funk, afro beat and everything else that Zeb challenged himself with. Zeb plays guitar and bass, but he doesn’t stop there. Zeb also produces, arranges, programs and mixes his own music effortlessly. Review: This EP is just a preview of the very eclectic dub dancefloor stylings of Zeb. Although he makes every song on his own, he sounds like a full 1970s afrobeat band in 'Revolutionary Dreams,' or a Disco Funk group from Nigeria in the 80s on 'Afro Disco'. Flip over the record & you'll hear some of the more familiar gypsy, dub, funk grooves Zeb is known for from Turntables on the Hudson, IRMA Records & Codek over the years he's been producing. Again, this is just a 4 track teaser for the album which is loaded with some of his best tunes to date!
