Review: With the addition of Sally Pilkington to Hen Ogledd, the band - now three albums young - go from trio to quartet. Hen Ogledd (or 'The Old North' in Welsh) this time around transgress from their acoustic origins and sound heard more-so on Bronze from 2016 to now flirting and experimenting with an electronic tip (nerds may spot that space echo delay) with high and hollering vocal performances still standing out in their indie, synth pop style. Find some Welsh poetry and spoken word on "Gwae Reged o Heddiw" and "Transport & Travel", while elsewhere "Sky Burial" hits those melancholic sweet spots, and it's as if Enya inspirations are in there somewhere. A patchwork of witty, evoquial, sweet intelligence.

Review: After the barn-storming success of his debut album Love Remains, Tom Krell returns with the hotly anticipated successor Total Loss, looking to expand upon his dewy-eyed balladry with more of those mournful, languid atmospherics that made him such a catch to sensitive souls everywhere. Moving on from the crackly lo-fi character of his debut album, his ethereal tones are now rendered in more developed tones, not least on the piano trills and subtle orchestrations of "Say My Name Or Say Whatever". There's still a healthy amount of R&B groove to be found in the romantic funk of "Running Back" and the finger-clicking goodness of "& It Was U", but for the most part Total Loss remains driven by cathedral sized reverbs and the heartbreak they imply.

Review: Jaakko Eino Kalevi is a Finnish musician that grew up in Jyvaskyla. He started to release music in 2007 and has gone on recently to play on David Byrne's recent American Utopia album, and in 2016 was invited to join the line-up of cult Belgian new-wave band Aksak Maboul for a run of shows. His first self-titled album on Domino sublabel Weird World back in 2015 was shortlisted for the sixth Nordic Music Prize. For his follow up here, the 34 year old Kalevi explores the concept of living in an age of constant connectivity, and how 'switching off' has become one of the great luxuries. He explores what he calls this 'essential, blissed out' state across this wonderful collection of songs.

Review: Jaakko Eino Kalei is a Finnish tram driver who also happens to make dreamy, abstract and utterly fantastic electro-pop. While he's been active since 2008 on the under-the-radar Helmi Levyt imprint as well as Beats In Space, he's now landed on Domino sub-label Weird World, also the home to the majority of Peaking Lights output. His self-titled debut for the label is a genreless bundle of psychedelic electronica, twelve slices of neo-funk with an experimental edge. The tracks all contain a lo-fi feel, a sound which adds to the whole Kalevi DIY vibe - something we're totally into - but they're also excellent stand-alone pieces for the charts. "Say", for instance, is a shimmering Hot Chip kinda cut, while "Mind Like Muscle" is funky and laid-back. You just gotta dive in there and check it out for yourselves. Hot!

Review: While the noise swirling around them is getting close to deafening, you get the feeling that the hype wouldn't penetrate the ethereal bubble that Peaking Lights exist in. The partnership of Indra Dunis and Aaron Coyes exudes innocence and wide-eyed delight at every turn - in that sense they make a pleasing departure from much of the current lo-fi zeitgeist. Where many of these artists have staked their claim to degraded sonics through a cacophony of noise and scrubbed-out vocals, Peaking Lights have a delicate, charming nature to them which uses withered production traits as a pathway rather than an end point. There's no denying that Lucifer is lo-fi (they even wryly name on of their tracks "Lo-Hi" on the album) but they don't use that aesthetic to mask the music that they make. Rather it sounds like they really don't have anything else to make their songs with other than Coyes' ropey home-made equipment and a battered four-track recorder. Whether this really is the case or not, there's no air of contrivance about Peaking Lights. For that reason alone the hype is well and truly justified. Highly recommended.

Review: Having made their names respectively as a modern-day psych-pop connoisseur somewhere between Prince and Syd Barrett (Connan Mockasin) and the man behind one of the most underrated debuts of the last decade (LA Priest, AKA Late Of The Pier's Sam Dust), these two charismatic square-pegs have joined forces, and the result is as strange and beguiling as one might hope for. Mixing luminous pop hooks with experimental flourishes, and sexed-up atmospherics with cockeyed '80s sonics, 'Soft Hair' is a skewed and seductive mission statement from an odd couple hopefully built to last.

Review: By the time he released his debut album, 2011's decidedly baggy and sun-kissed Within & Without, Ernest Greene's Washed Out project was already picking up serious hype, thanks in no small part to his delightfully immersive fusions of chillwave, psychedelic pop and near-horizontal shoegaze revivalism. Here he returns with Paracosm, an album supposedly inspired by Greene's desire to "create an imaginary world". As twee as that sounds, Greene can get away with it - not least because he retains the ability to create woozy, atmospheric and, yes, immersive song-scapes. The results are, at times, breathtaking; for proof, check the glistening Hawaiian lilt of "Don't Give Up", the wall of sound blast of "All I Know" and the wide-eyed Balearic fluidity of "Paracosm".
