  1. Running (The Chase) (4:27)
  2. Kalvier (6:02)
  3. Bonobobeat (6:30)
Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Jan Schulte and Diskoking Burnhart McKoolski's Bufiman project - two years, in fact. After previously plying their wares on Verein Freir Menschen und Musik, the eccentric Balearic/disco duo have been snapped up by Gilb'r's Versatile imprint. "Running (The Chase)" is something of a killer - a driving chunk of clavinet-laden disco fuelled by a seriously heavy post-punk/dub disco bassline. "Kavalier" is deeper and spookier, with new age synth melodies riding a loose, Afro-influenced groove. The slower "Bonobobeat", meanwhile, is a low-slung delight, with snaking synthesizer lines wrapping themselves around dense, head-nodding disco percussion.

  1. Marc Chantereau - "Gibraltar" (Jeff Gets A Single Room! edit)
  2. Raymonde Et Les Moutards - "Y'en A Marre" (Jean Marc Misere Pure Beat edit)
Review: In October, Gilbr's Vesatile imprint will release a collection of obscure French disco, boogie and synth wave jams put together by renowned Parisian crate digger Vidal Benjamin. Here, the label presents a second sampler, featuring re-edits of cuts on the comp. The real killer is Jean Marc Misere's Pure Beat Edit of Raymond Et Les Moutards' "Y'en A Marre", which turns the original into a locked-in chunk of dancefloor-friendly boogie underpinned by a superbly rubbery bassline. The A-side edit of "Gibraltar" by Marc Chantereau is pretty tasty, too, with the eccentric original - all whoops, loose disco and zany vocals - being given a well-judged dancefloor tweak.

  1. Breaking Through The Pain Barrier (Mantra) (12:21)
  2. Encephalomyelitis Disseminata (11:35)
Review: 2016 marks 20 years since Glibert "Gilb'r" Cohen founded Versatile Records. The Parisian imprint shows no signs of flagging despite its' vintage, and here delivers another eccentric, wildly imaginative 12". This time it's Cottam at the controls, laying down two contrasting cuts. "Breaking Through The Pain Barrier" is woozy and hypnotic, but also makes great use of off-kilter electronics, psychedelic effects and quirky, alien melodies. At times, it feels spooky, at others oddly becalmed (despite its' shuffling, densely programmed rhythms). "Encephalomyelitis Disseminata" sees Cottam explicitly reference the medical condition he was diagnosed with just as he was breaking through. Here he changes the script, basing the action around a bold, rising and falling bassline, stretched-out chords and clicking, slightly wonky percussion. It's deep house, Jim, but not as we know it.

  1. Le Maitre Des Illusions (9:39)
  2. Approaching Kether (7:48)
Review: We might be wrong but Le Maitre Des Illusions could be the first solo 12" from Gilb'r since 1997! Seeing as he's been busy collaborating with I:Cube on the long running Chateau Flight and more recently on several 12"s with DJ Sotofett, not to mention overseeing the supreme Versatile Records, we can forgive him. And Le Maitre Des Illusions is a fine record for any self-respecting DJ to have in their arsenal, with the title track a supple, gliding house cut blessed with warm, seductive xylophone touches. It's the musical equivalent of a deep rub massage on the dancefloor. "Approaching Kether" is a more downbeat affair, the sort of cut you'd hear in a Brian Not Brian mixtape and spend hours tracking down. Nice moves Monsieur Cohen!

  1. Transpiration
  2. Jah Menta
  3. Lucifer En Discotheque
Review: Amongst the many new albums to get excited about in 2012, those of a gallic house persuasion will surely list Megamix, the forthcoming 4th studio long player from veteran French producer I:Cube highly on their want lists. More so once your ears have soaked in the three tracks on this Lucifer En Discotheque 12" - all of which feature on the forthcoming album on regular haunt Versatile Records. I:Cube fans will be familiar with the multi faceted sounds that feature here with lead track "Transpiration" a gloriously sweat filled paean to various stages in dance music history, seamlessly combining 90s era rave stabs with the percussive swagger of punk funk and his own leftfield inclinations. Alongside this "Jah Menta" proves to be equally experimental in its melodic approach as it does subterranean and scratchy in its rhythmic directions, whilst the title track is a driving synth wave oddity of the highest order.

Review: The brilliant I:Cube album arrives on double vinyl! !"M" Megamix sees I:Cube show himself to be a master of alluring grooves, and he uses that gift to its full potential here. The Frenchman's lack of pretension is one of his greatest strengths; the I:Cube way is a direct and satisfying one. At no point is this LP cheesy or hackneyed, but it never tries to be too clever for its own good. "M" Megamix is a triumphant statement of what a dance music album should feel like. It might not be a comprehensive answer, but it certainly puts paid to all those "collection of singles" efforts out there. One of the year's best LPs - don't miss the chance to grab it on wax.

  3. Hovercraft
Review: Nicholas Chaix has been rather quite of late - on a solo tip, at least - with his 2014 output consisting of a single 12" of rhythm tracks (the heavy Cubo Rhythm Tracks release). This, then, is a welcome return. In its' original form, "Cryptoporticus" is fiendishly creepy, coming on like a slow-motion jog around an abandoned industrial complex in Sheffield with just ghosts for company (an effect heightened by Chaix's use of early Warp style bleeps and Rob Gordon-ish sub-bass). For imaginative DJs, he's also included a delightfully freaky "bleepapella". On the flip, he offers up something for the Love From Outer Space crowd - the new wave influenced gothic deep house swing of "Hovercraft".

Review: Taken from last year's maxi EP under his off-piste Oeil Cube guise, I Cube's supersized "XXXX" gets the treatment from Red Light Records' Abel on this special 45". Taking its already smouldering slow-n-low vibe and giving it even more a hypnotic deep plunge, it's a respectful twist that loses none of the original's Balearic charm. Flip for "Etire En Avant" an immaculate slice of previously unreleased loopy magic that was recorded straight to tape in 96 but still sounds like it's 2096. Cool as ever.

Review: Given the label's longevity and consistently on-point releases - in a variety of styles, it should be noted - it's somewhat surprising that Gilb'r's Versatile Records imprint is not more celebrated. Here, they welcome back Zoot Records founder The Maghreban (AKA Dr Zygote), who goes all Idjut Boys with a trio of heavyweight dub disco workouts. The title track - all booming punk-funk bass, horror-influenced synth flourishes and dense, live-sounding disco percussion - sets the tone, before he pushes things up a notch with the relentless, low slung synthesizer gooks and sweaty house beats of "Frenetique". Finally, he presses the button marked "weird-out" on the lolloping, jazz-flecked dub disco madness of "Kung Fu".

Review: For some oddball disco with an '80s soundtrack vibe don't overlook the strung out funk of DJ Ringardos' version to Queen Zaza's "Pense Qu'Elle Danse", a highlight from the Versatile various artist EP. Sharing that side is Jean-Marc Misere's discoco edit of Raymonde Et Les Moutards' "Y'En A Marre!" which sounds like a cross between original New York Electro (think Man Parrish) and the contemporary French pop group Yelle, while Gilbert Cohen & Vidal Benjamin get deeper and chic on their Italo-styled edit to "I Love Video" by New Paradise - something you can imagine lighting up the dance floors of Rimini. Lastly there's the funkified bass rhythms and theremin sounds of the ALT edit to "Amnesie" by Ark. Edits don't get much better than this.

Review: While largely unknown this side of the English Channel, Benjamin Vidal is one of France's most notorious crate diggers and record collectors. It's nice to see Gilb'r and company giving him a chance to showcase these digging skills via a compilation of his own on Versatile. Disco Sympathie differs from many bog standard disco compilations as it focuses entirely on French music from the early 1980s. The names are unfamiliar, and the sounds even more so; a hotchpotch of quirky, tongue-in-cheek cuts that variously doff a beret to American boogie, British and German synth-wave, eccentric synth-pop and the kind of expansive post-disco madness that thrills and intrigues in equal measure. It also features Sonia's "Sur Ma Musique", a hidden gem from 1980 that joins the dots between tongue-in-cheek Italo and throbbing synth-pop. It's not an expensive record, but it's certainly a great one.

Review: Five years ago, French record collector Vidal Benjamin wowed us with "Disco Sympathie", a killer compilation of obscure Gallic disco and boogie gems. For this similarly dusty-fingered follow-up, he's set his gaze on French new wave and synth-pop. It's an entertaining and eye-opening listen that moves from the samba-chanson of Cecilia and the fizzing electro-funk of Electropic, to the sweet and cheery synth-pop of "Reserve". Highlights in between include the bustling synth-pop sleaziness of Sonia's "J'Sais Plus Ou J'En Suis", the throbbing new wave quirkiness of Milpatte's "Je Vais Danser" and the low-slung post-punk pop of I:Cube's fresh re-edit of Yogo's "Reve De Star".

Review: French duo Zombie Zombie has always been one of Versatile's more eccentric acts. Inspired by a mix of Krautrock, Italo, synth-wave and John Carpenter style horror disco (their last album was a set of cover's of the director-turned-musician's work), they continually produce music that's both hard to place and thrillingly exciting. Rituels D'N Nouvelle Monde once again gathers together these influences and makes them into a coherent, anything-goes whole. Like previous sets, there's much to admire, from the rising freak organ and military drums of "L'Age D'Or" and shuffling Giallo-goes-kraut vibes of "Black Paradise", to the hissing slasher disco of "Illuminations".

Review: France's Zombie Zombie are perhaps the most representative outfit of Versatile's wet and wild discography, and the duo have served up some real fire power on the label over the years. Two years on from their last album, Etienne Jaumet and Cosmic Neman return with a new full-length offering that originated as a soundtrack to Elsa Guerin and Martin Palisse's abstract Slow Futur juggling performance. "Hyperspace" opens with a soft-spoken tribal groove, a sublimely hazy and dubbed-out opener to let those synths warm up their muscles before the electro-leaning buzzes and low-ends of the quirky space-house jam that is "Slow Futur". "Blue Screen" is as majestic and hollow as it is cosmic, and its airy groove made of blocky synth rolls is mightily refreshing, while "Extra Life" goes back to an 80's flex thanks to its metallic drum pattern and deep, far-reaching synths. A glorious return to action from the cosmic brothers!
